“No, but you will, it is them that decided you would live, that you would be the chosen one to stop the great evil that is forming...They are the beginning and the ending of all things and you will learn them, and respect them all in turn” Kazumi smiled before slowly turning her body this way and that disturbing the yellowed leaves on the ground as she caused a sweet breeze up around them.
“I have never had much in the way of faith” He admitted watching the leaves falling around her like confetti. It landed even in her hair making her look like a woodland fairy. He had once believed in the new god but his father had beaten that out of him. He couldn’t believe in a god that would allow such a man as his father to exist and he didn’t think he could believe that he would believe in the old gods any more, not after what he had seen with the child in the tower. Kazumi appeared to see that in his expression as she stopped moving and gave him a sad smile.
“You blame the gods for the child in the tower?” She asked though in reality it was a statement rather than a question. Satoshi nodded dragging his hands through his hair as he growled;
“If they were real why didn’t they save her?”
“You do not think that they worked through you?”
“If anything it was the girl herself. I dreamt about her, she begged for help, not the gods...” The dreams he had had of the child and the way she had pleaded with him flashed before his eyes clearly. For some reason his answer seemed to please Kazumi who sat herself down on the floor of the forest with her legs crossed.
“Before we start your true training we must get you to believe...What do you know of the gods of old?” She asked and Satoshi gave a shrug is eyebrows knitting together as he tried to remember the stories his mother had told him. She had followed the old gods in her way but it was hard in the palace with his father attacking her and calling her a stupid country whore.
“Only that there are seven of them”
“They were human once, mortal just like you. Magic is what gave them their ability to be gods amongst mortals”
“Magic? That sounds even more unbelievable than gods” Satoshi scoffed though even as he said it he remembered the way it had felt when he had been dragged out of the tower and thrown here into a forest that he didn’t recognise. Kazumi laughed easily waving her hand so the leaves around her rose from the floor.
“You say that, but you have witnessed the greatest display of magic the world has known in many years. The child brought you from the tower, how did they do that without magic”
“You’re saying that the child has magic? ”
“No, I’m saying that the child is magic. Something is coming, something worse than your father, the earth could sense it and all the magic it had left in the world was placed into the womb of a true believer. The child was born not from a man. The child is raw magic in the form of a human”
“Then how did she end up trapped in the tower with my father?” Satoshi asked in a disbelieving manner and Kazumi looked sad before waving her hand again and producing a pool of crystal clear water in between them. Satoshi gulped at the display of magic as the woman smiled and then sighed;
“Look into the mirror...”
“Why?”
“Because it is easier to show you the truth rather than tell you. But prepare yourself...” Kazumi whispered as Satoshi moved from the stump to edge closer to the water. The pool was so clear that he should have been able to see the base of the hole at the bottom but instead he saw images, blurred images of a woman. He couldn’t make out her features clearly but he knew that it was the witch. He edged ever more closer and then he was falling head first into the pool.
