Keep the Faith part 14
Feb. 25th, 2016 10:20 am“I thought we were going for a walk? Why are we in front of your car?” Nino asked with a lifted eyebrow staring at the lime green car with almost distaste. It looked almost as old as some of the artefacts that he spent most of his days cataloguing and he was terrified that something, maybe the seats, would give way when he sat on it. Takenaka gave a shrug unlocking the car and almost pushing him inside as he growled;
“Because walking around the college maybe fun for you but I’ve seen it that many times if I have to go through it again I’m pretty sure I’ll put my head through a window…Come on…”
“Fine…” Nino sank into the front seat trying hard not to wrinkle his nose at the state of the car. He knew that in his own way his boss was attempting to do something nice for him and Nino was glad of the time to not think about Jun but at the same time he wanted time to think about it knowing that from tonight he was expected to spend the entire weekend with him. Takenaka settled himself in the driver’s seat and they were soon pulling off to what sounded like the exhaust scrapping along the floor. “Are you sure that this is going to hold up?”
“Yeah…” The professor nodded raising his voice over the sound of the awful noise before pressing play on a tape deck. Harsh sounding metal sound filled his ears and Nino struggled to focus on anything but the very loud and almost annoying screech that was coming from the near ancient speaker system. As he drove, the professor’s head was bobbing back and forth in time with the beat and his hands were tapping at the wheel and Nino struggled hard not to roll his eyes or cover his ears. Screamo music had never been his thing, even in the lowest moments of his years he had preferred the softer side of rock and he was genuinely surprised that Takenaka appeared to be into the music.
They didn’t drive for very long until they were pulling into what was formerly a child’s park but was now a sort of training ground for the archaeology department. There were areas all set out for the more physical aspect of the work and Takenaka led him to some trenches that he knew had small insignificant finds in. They were nothing really, bits of plate from a charity shop and some pig bone from a butchers but the idea was to give people practice before being allowed on a proper dig site.
“Here…Start digging…” The older man said handing him a trowel and without even thinking about it Nino carefully jumped into the hole and began to dig surprised when the teacher came in beside him. They worked in silence for a few minutes before Takenaka asked “What did he do? Finally confess?”
“…Yeah…I know I handled it badly but…” Nino whispered his voice breaking off as his hand clenched in the mud tears biting at his eyes again.
“You got scared…”
“I’m so pathetic…”
“Far from it, if you were pathetic I would have chased you away like all the other morons that Yamaguchi tried to palm off on me as my assistant…” Takenaka scoffed and Nino’s mouth twitched a little knowing that it was true. When he had first arrived for work experience Yamaguchi had actually apologised to him for placing him with Takenaka who was known to have a wickedly painful tongue but somehow after a month of putting up with the man’s shit comments about him being useless something had clicked with them and most of the reason he had been given such an amazing opportunity was because of the man beside him. “…So tell me what’s going through that head and I’ll let you know when you’re being an idiot…Okay?”
