“I am sorry that I upset you so much with my tale…” Ohno breathed gently wiping his eyes with his thumb and Nino let out a pitiful self-berating laugh unable to believe that he had actually started crying. He was the one meant to be comforting Ohno not the other way around. He moved out of the arms and pushed away his tears and sadness and focused on something that he might be able to change. The thoughts of the food shortage must be weighing heavily on his lord’s mind and he wanted to be able to elevate it, at least a little. Refrigerators would be perfect but of course he had no idea how to make one of those but there was something that maybe could work. They were in the middle of winter after all.

“My lord, have you heard of ice houses?” Nino asked softly not completely sure if they were around in this time period or not. He had heard his history teacher mention them and given the story Ohno had told about the lack of food he doubted that it would do much harm in his lord knowing about them. Ohno shook his head slowly his eyebrows drawing together and Nino swallowed hoping that he would be able to explain it properly “Um you dig a large hole in the ground…Larger…Like a dungeon…And then you fill it almost to the centre with ice collected from the rivers…Then you cover it with mud…The ice stays frozen for almost all of the year and you can keep meats and food fresh inside…If you can build several of them or one large one with enough ice that you may keep other food than rice for your people…In case there is ever a time like that again…”

“I cannot understand how the ice would stay frozen…” Ohno hummed and Nino had to admit that he was beginning to wish that he had paid more attention to his studies that didn’t involve medicine. He would have been able to be so much more help to his lord that way. There were things that he could do such as implementing some health measures and he hoped they would help keep Ohno and the people of the village.

“I’m not completely sure how they work but they do, Satoshi...And its winter now we could at least try it out…” Nino murmured softly trying hard to encourage the idea. Though he wasn’t completely sure where they would begin. He knew that they had had to dig out a huge hole and then find a way to stop the ice from just running away. Ohno stiffened against him before relaxing again saying;

“I’m sure that we can give it ago, little vixen but for now I suggest that you head back to your room…”

“May I stay here?” Nino whispered feeling completely relaxed and comfortable against his lord. Again Ohno stiffened his hand running up and down his back a few times before he let out a sigh nodding almost reluctantly.

“Yes, you may...But I…I warn you that I am often disturbed from sleep…” He grumbled and Nino nodded slowly remembering all the times that he had had to coax the lord through during his fever.

“I will help you through them…I promise…”

Oh don't you worry Ohno. Nino will shoo those nightmares away. Even if it comes you will have a cute Nini to cuddle it away!! ^ ^/

Refrigerator, never thought of those. I know you can make iglo houses with ice. But I also think is it possible the ice not melting?

How is the water from the river frozen itself? *confused*
I thought you are supposed to make shelf-like thing to replicate the frigde but if it is like Nino way, is it only putting things on the ground of ice? Idk.

Oh..
I just search on google of those ice houses. It reveal on ground but I guess for the safety if it is war, it's better if it is underground I guess? I guess less people knowing esp the public, less leak of information to enemies and other envious party.
I see you need spaces, sawdust to surround block of ices and then the storage itself.
So maybe if this is all underground, they would need to dig an extremely hole. Better start asap!
Perhaps also selected trusted people who will take care of these things. You know like treasury thing?
