“May I take my things to my room, Aiba-san?” Nino asked as the through way closed. His voice was chipped, his throat dry and his eyes sore with the tears that he was trying not to shed but he was still determined to handle himself in the way that his master had taught him.
“Nino…” Aiba said softly his hand resting on his shoulder but Nino shrugged him off quickly. His whole body tingling unpleasantly with the contact, he was marked and he belonged to Jun even if he no longer lived with him the incubus was still his master.
“Please Aiba-san…” He said quickly and politely and with a quick smile Sakurai motioned to a wooden staircase that seemed to be stuck in the middle of the brightly coloured living room. Aiba’s house in the mountain was beautifully cheerful, with bright animal prints and a wild and bizarre mishmash of colours that nobody would ever think would work but did. Everything about it was warm and welcoming but for Nino it was a painful realisation that he really wasn’t in his master’s house, with his sedate and careful decorating.
He carried his belongings slowly up the stairs willing himself not to cry even though tears weren’t too far away. He had been here a lot when he was younger, mostly with his master but sometimes when Jun would be going away for more than a night. His room was the second biggest room, and was painted in soft yellows with shelves for his games, a desk and a T.V. He had always liked staying here because he was allowed the T.V in his bedroom in his house his master had refused to allow him one in their bedroom saying that a bedroom was for sleeping.
It was the work of a few minutes for him to put away his games and clothes but then he stood around for a long time looking at the photos that he had taken out and put on his bed. He wasn’t sure were to put them, he thought that if he put them on the desk they would be too far away for him to look at but he didn’t want to ask Aiba if he could hammer nails into his wooden walls.
“Are you okay, Nino?” Aiba asked softly coming into the room and Nino was torn between nodding and shaking his head and in the end it became a weird jerking movement “I’m sorry, stupid question ne, of course you’re not alright…I can’t believe that Jun did that…”
“Master did what he thought he had too…I…I was getting in the way of his life I…I only want master to be happy” Nino said his fingers moving over the latest picture that was in a deep purple frame his eyes not leaving Jun’s face. “I’m sorry that I’m troubling…”
“You’re no trouble, Nino…” Aiba told him gently coming to stand beside him and looking at the photos. “Anywhere that you want to hang them Nino, they’ll just stay on the wall…I promise…”
“Thank-you Aiba-san…” Nino muttered taking the first picture and resting it against the wall mildly surprised that when he moved his hand away the picture stayed where it was. Jun had never used his power like that, in fact half the time it was easy to forget that the incubus had any power at all but Aiba seemed to relish in it and he had to wonder how a human like Sakurai would cope and then he seemed to remember that Sakurai was just a human like him. He was a human but he and Aiba loved each other, if it was possible for them, maybe he and his master could be together.
Later that night he and Sakurai were in the kitchen after dinner. The older human’s hands were submerged in hot soapy water and Nino studied him silently. He didn’t know how to bring it up, he had gotten close to Aiba over the years, but Sakurai was still distant to him and he didn’t want to say anything that might upset him. He cleared his throat a few times and twisted the patterned tea-towel tightly around his fingers before Sakurai turned and gave him a small smile
“What’s wrong Nino?”
“…Sakurai-san…Um…How did you meet Aiba-san?” Nino asked carefully, his tongue nervously darting over his lips as he dried the pots that the older man washed. Sakurai was silent for a long time and the teenager grew nervous wondering if he had upset him and was about to apologise when he started speaking.
“I was a reporter…I was here doing a story, what was it? 22-23 years ago” Sakurai hummed as he washed the pots his dipping in and out of the hot soapy water without stopping as he told him his story “There had been a landslide and two people were missing assumed dead…While I was here I met Masaki-chan, we were in the small pub and he was so beautiful and I was hooked. I followed him home and…I realised how foolish I had been…”
“But…Didn’t you know? Didn’t you know that Aiba-san was the son of a Yuki-Onna?”
“Nino…You were brought up with demon, incubus and magic the rest of us we’re not so lucky…We get told that things like that are just horror stories…” The former reporter sighed softly and Nino hummed thoughtfully remembering the books that he had read in school “So no I didn’t know that Masaki was what he is…Also…He didn’t use a lure or anything he was just…So cute…He had turned me down earlier that night but well…I was pretty arrogant back then, I wanted him no matter what”
“So how did you find out?”
“The missing people, they were here tucked up in bed…In a suspended animation. They should have been dead…They had been crushed and their bodies were riddled with frost bite…”
“Did they die?” Nino whispered his eyes wide as curiosity flooded through his system.
“No…Masaki allowed them to live…He healed them and sent them on their way with no memory of what had happened…” Sakurai answered with a shake of the head as he gave a sigh and rested his back against the sink his arms folding across his powerful chest. “All I had to do was agree to stay here…”
“So that was easy! You loved him right…” Nino said brightly his body relaxing until Sakurai shook his head
“No, at the time I didn’t love him…I just wanted him, lusted after him, a Yuki-onna or the child of a Yuki-onna, they will be your perfect partner they’ll do anything that you want but they ask one thing in return…”
“What’s that?”
“They ask for love…Real love and back then I didn’t feel that…I hurt him…” Sakurai sighed staring at the far wall and Nino’s head cocked on one side
“But…You love him now?” He asked hoping that he wasn’t pushing too far and he relaxed when Sakurai broke into a broad smile and gave him a nod.
“More than anything…” He whispered and Nino smiled hope springing into him. Maybe Jun would change too, he thought and he couldn’t help probing further wanting to know how he could fix what had happed between him and Jun.
“Why? What changed, Sakurai-san?”
“…I…Killed him…Nino...You should finish those and get ready for bed…” Sakurai said his voice gruff and thick with emotions and Nino quickly gave a bow and wiped his hands on the tea-towel and ran out of the kitchen seeing Aiba standing in the living room he froze for a moment wondering what Sakurai had meant that he had killed him. The semi-demon gave him his normal friendly smile and Nino bowed his head again and walked a little slower to the stairs as Aiba went to his lover. Once he was in his bedroom he lay on the bed staring at the photo of him and his master tears rolling down his cheeks again as he took it from the wall and held in his arms hugging it tightly
“Master please I want to go home”
