“You’re sure this is the man, Kazunari?” Inspector Murakami asked eying up Stirling who had stayed silent as they had marched him to the nearest police office and sent a runner to the yard. He was rather ordinary looking in Sho’s opinion, deeper set than he had imagined with his good hand having a large number of scars. His face was plain too with the faint dusting of hairs covering his chin and lower jaw while his nose was broken.
“Of course I am inspector…If you check his left pocket you will find the cord that he was using to strangle his victims…” Kazunari announced easily from his position against the door “If that will be all I would like to be returning to Baker Street now, I am sure that you will be able to handle things from here…”
Sho noticed that the tone of Kazunari’s voice was almost sneering as if he didn’t believe that they would be able to handle even such a thing as processing Edward without him but he was soon turning on his heel and walking out towards the exit.
“What a minute you haven’t told us why…” The inspector spluttered and Sho turned eagerly hoping for a display of intellect from his roommate but Kazunari barely glanced over his shoulder at them his eyes seeming almost bored with the whole thing as he murmured;
“…Unrequited love, a stupid reason but stupid men rarely have intelligent reasons, please do let me know if anything else interesting turns up, inspector I do hate the thought of you running around without a clue...Come doctor…” Feeling almost like a puppy summoned by his master Sho trotted after Kazunari disappointed by the let down until he remembered the circumstance of the crime, the molly house, the people that had been within. For Kazunari to say the reasons to the inspector would invite a raid and probably the deaths of those men. “You are disappointed by my lack of explanation? You would rather have me expose those in the house…They are innocent…”
“Of murder…”
“And that is the crime we were investigating…” Kazunari hummed holding up a hand to summon a hansom and Sho fell silent again waiting until they were settled inside before broaching the subject that had been playing on his mind since they had been in the depths of the molly house.
“How did you know the house was there?” He whispered quietly making sure that they were not over heard by the driver. Kazunari sent him a look his lips twitching in an almost smile as he gave his answer;
“…I am a frequent visitor to such places…”
“You…Are?”
“Would that bother you if it were the case?”
“I…Suppose…I…” Sho spluttered out unsure how to answer and he was most relieved when Kazunari gave a laugh holding up his hand.
“Peace, doctor, I was simply teasing you…The house could be seen from the yard in which our first victim spent much of his time…” Kazunari told him as his tapped his fingers against his chin “I imagined that he stood there wishing for the courage to do the same and when he did fell victim to our killer…Come we are almost at Baker Street let us be in the warm and I will tell you everything…”
