Ninomiya Kazunari stared at the stretch of road anxiously waiting for his father who should be on his way home. One stage coach had already thundered its merry way passed their gate but as far as he was aware nobody had alighted and already he could feel knots inside of his stomach. His father was well known and respected in their village, which was a given as he was the vicar, but he seemed to believe that everybody was good inside and carried himself with an overly optimistic view of the world and Nino was positive that it would get him killed when he was in the town. Nino had begged Kenta to take him with him but he had refused telling him that he didn’t need to see the prison or the court.
“Kazunari…Staring at the road won’t make him come home any faster…” His mother called with what sounded like a laugh but he knew that she was just as worried about her absentminded husband as he was. “Come on it and stir this gravy I don’t want there to be any lumps for when your father returns…”
“Yes, mamma…” Nino murmured reluctantly pulling his eyes away from the road just when he started to hear the thunderous sounds of a carriage. His heart sang as he realised that it was slowing down at their gate and he saw joy cross over his mother’s face through the small open stained glass window. Turning back to the gate Nino ran as fast as he could go shouting “It’s the coach mamma…”
“Thank the good sweet lord…” His mother said joining him at the gate her arm slipping around his shoulders just as the carriage pulled to a stop. Instead of the happy face of his father like he was expecting he was presented with the scowling dirty face of a boy about his age. His finger was sticking up his nose and his expression was completely closed in on itself. “It seems your father has picked up another one…” His mother chuckled softly squeezing his shoulder lightly before moving to the door of the carriage and Nino knew immediately what she meant. His father was always picking up waifs and strays trying to redeem them. “Welcome, Daniel…Would you take a drink?”
“Aye, my lady…” The driver of the carriage said and Nino wondered, not for the first time, how his mother seemed to be able to tell the different drivers apart. It wasn’t as if they travelled a lot.
“Kazunari go and fetch Daniel a drink…” His mother said and Nino almost whined looking at the door of the carriage that still hadn’t been opened the dirty face had vanished leaving the window empty but he could hear the soft voice of his father talking.
“What? But…” He said slowly trying to keep the whine from his voice. The woman gave a smile rolling her eyes just a little pushing him away.
“Go your father will be here when you come back…”
Nino nodded reluctantly stomping his way to the house muttering under his breath. There was something cordial on the side and Nino poured out a large glass carrying back outside and smiling with happiness when he saw his father.
“Papa!” He shouted picking up his pace and almost throwing the drink at the driver before turning to his father who pulled him into a tight hug his lips pressing to his cheek.
“There you are my Nino…” The man said lightly “I would like you to meet somebody…This is Satoshi…Satoshi I would like you to meet my son, Kazunari…Though most people call him Kazu…”
“Pleased to meet you…” Nino smiled holding his hand out to the dirty faced boy who stared at it as if it were an offensive weapon before reaching out and taking it saying softly;
“Pleased to meet you…”
