It took longer than Kenta would have liked to talk the judge into allowing him to take the boy into his custody and even longer to get the police officer that was holding him to release him. But they were soon marching towards his carriage. He had expected the boy to bolt at the first opportunity but to his surprise he stayed at his side all the way to the carriage that would take them out of the city and back to his much preferred village abode.
“What is your name boy?” He asked as the driver stacked away his few belongings up onto the parcel shelf. The other people already in the carriage pulled their noses up at the boy but Kenta placed a fatherly hand on his shoulders encouraging him inside. Ordinarily he would have first taken the boy to a hotel and had him cleaned up but he was tired and longing to be back with his wife and son, who he knew would already be waiting for his arrival. The boy shrugged off his hand his eyes spitting fire as he glared up at him growling;
“Look you old fruit, I agreed to come with you and I’m staying with until we get the hell out of this town but after that I’m gone!”
“If that is what you want then I won’t stop you but I suggest that you at least come home with me first, my wife would have made food and you can have a bath and get some fresh clothes from my son…You and he are around the same age…” Kenta agreed softly not paying attention to the glares or the anger that was in the dirty face. He couldn’t imagine what kind of a life he had already had up until now but he could imagine that it was completely different to the life that he had given to his son. Kazunari was a bright boy, clever and quick witted with a leaning towards mischief that would cause a saint to start swearing but he had a good heart to.
“Don’t want no charity…” The boy mumbled and Kenta gave a small shrug closing his eyes and leaning back against the leather.
“Well we have a four hour journey together if you want me to keep calling you boy then so be it…” He hummed his fingers tapping on his stomach as he wondered if his good lady had made her scones and if Kazunari had broken another window practicing his throw.
“Satoshi…Not boy…” The boy, Satoshi, grumbled grudgingly and Kenta opened his eyes again holding out his hand to him.
“Pleased to meet you, Satoshi, I’m Kenta…Ninomiya Kenta…” He said watching as Satoshi stared at the hand as if he didn’t know what to do with it. Kenta moved forward and took one of the boy’s squeezing it tightly and shaking it up and down.
“You’re a strange old fruit…” Satoshi grumbled again pulling his hand free and turning to look out of the carriage window making himself as small as possible so that he wasn’t touched by the man that was sitting next to him. Kenta gave a light laugh jerking a little as the carriage pulled away its metal rimmed wheels making a monstrous noise on the uneven cobbles.
Satoshi didn’t look away from the window until the houses of the town slipped away and endless rolling fields came into view. Kenta had always loved the view but it was made something even more special by the look that came of his young ward’s face. Excitement, fear, and wonder, all danced around on his features making his eyes sparkle and his jaw drop open.
“You live here fruit?”
“Not yet…My parish is close to the sea…” Kenta asked as the boy turned his eyes back to the view that was stretching out in front of him “You can see it from my back garden…”
“The sea? That’s that big water right?” The boy asked with more excitement than Kenta had been expecting but he nodded anyway giving his answer;
“Yes…I’m sure my son would happily take you to see it more closely…If you decided to stay of course…”
“I ain’t staying! I could run away to sea…”
“You could…But I do hope you’ll have dinner first…”
