Nino had never been to a fair before. He had been a theme park once when he was young and the Aiba’s had taken him but even a summer festival had been considered too dangerous and Nino suspected that his family’s security would have had a panic attack if the saw the fair that Ohno led him to. As it was Friday and still during school hours neither of them had been expecting the numbers that were running around. Or at least Nino hadn’t been expecting such a large number but Ohno it seemed had been and he let out an almost happy sounding sigh his hand resting on the small of his back.
“Not as busy as it normally is…” Ohno hummed propelling him forward to what was supposedly going to be the best date ever. At the moment Nino was almost convinced that it was going to be a complete disaster.
“Seriously? How busy is it normally?” Nino hissed feeling oddly out of place in the middle of a mostly white group. There was a lot of white students at their school but there wasn’t as many as he was looking at now and he was positive that they were all staring at them. But he supposed that that could be just residual feelings. The press had made a meal of their statement and now the entire school knew of his relationship with Ohno and they had been subjected to a lot of looks and not all of them were good.
“Very busy, look just make sure you stay close so I can’t lose you…I promise that you’ll have fun…Do you want a candy apple? Or some candyfloss?” Ohno asked pointing at the first stall they came to and Nino shook his head very nearly blushing when the woman behind the booth gave them a suggestive smile. “They are staring at you…Everyone here is here for the same reason we are, they want to have fun…”
“I…I know…”
“Good…So what do you want to go on first? The rollercoaster or the Ferris Wheel?” Ohno gestured upwards with his hand and almost reluctantly Nino looked up to see the two rides that were being shown. Neither looked that safe but the rollercoaster thankfully had no loops and didn’t seem to be as high as the Ferris wheel that was proudly declaring that it was the largest Ferris wheel in the whole of the UK.
“Rollercoaster…” Nino mumbled wondering if he could back out of both and just go on the dodgems that seemed to be a little safer.
“…You’re not enthusiastic about this are you?” Ohno chuckled guiding him towards the rollercoaster with so much eagerness that Nino suspected that it had been the ride he had wanted to go on and he had only asked out of politeness.
“…Sorry, I’ve just never been on a ride that lives on the back of a van before…How is it all safety checked?”
“I dunno but it is…My security made sure of that the first time I was came…They have paperwork to prove it now stop whining and let’s go be teenagers…Come on…” Ohno tugged at his hand spurring him into an almost run over the still slightly squishy ground. There was a rather long line at snaking its way around a metal ramp and they joined the end of it with Ohno making sure that his light blue and yellow band was still wrapped around his wrist. It was the thing that would be getting them on all of the rides without having to pay and Nino had to admit that he was rather found of the band. It wasn’t particularly expensive looking but it wasn’t cheap either with the only logo being the catch that held it in place around his wrist. He wasn’t sure if he was allowed to keep it after but he hoped so as a memory of their date. “Hey…If you’d rather go somewhere else…”
“No…I’ll be fine…I’m just…Nervous…” Nino shrugged jumping when somebody else joined them in the queue causing the metal to pop under his feet. Ohno laughed at the terrified expression that crossed over his face before squeezing at his hand.
“Poor little prince, you really haven’t been allowed to live much have you? We’re going on as many things as we can today…”
“Urgh! You’re going to make me sick!” Nino moaned weakly having to admit that he was rather enjoying the man’s enthusiasm. He never would have guessed that the perfect, sleepy faced, head boy would be an adrenaline junkie, it seemed to be completely out of character but he couldn’t deny that the overly bright smile and shine that was in his eyes was attractive. It gave him a much younger feel that he was normally showing and Nino gave a smile in return more so when Ohno just made a kissy face at him.
“Of course not, I like taking care of you and all but…If you’re sick we can’t do anything other than stare at each other…” He chuckled and Nino was glad that nobody around them was able to speak Japanese. He still flushed though and stopped on his date’s foot surprised that while they had been talking the line had been moving and now they were standing right next to the ride indicating that they would be the next ones shoved into the little cars and sent hurtling around the track.
“…Can we…Is there…A ghost train?” He asked his heart finding its way into his mouth as the row of six cars was filled with people and they took another step towards their doom.
“…Um yeah…” Ohno answered with a nod his face becoming a little shifty and Nino wondered if the ghost train operator was another ex-flame. It wouldn’t surprise him but he was still only a teenager how many exes could he have? “Why?”
“Can we go on it next? If we survive this I mean…”
“I…Don’t handle them very well but if you want to then I don’t see a problem with it…”
“You don’t like ghost trains?”
“…Not really…I was scared when I was on one once…” Ohno mumbled as the rollercoaster hurtled passed them the twelve people on it screaming loudly with their hands up in the air and Nino gave a sharp snort of laughter before he managed to get himself back under control asking;
“Um…Isn’t that the point?”
“…Yes…But this guy was an arsehole, I was only about five but he was dressed up as a zombie and well…He jumped onto the back of the cart and…Well he scared me so much that I haven’t been on one since…” Ohno gave a dramatic shudder causing Nino to let out another laugh moving closer to him suddenly feeling better about his own fear of the rollercoaster.
“I’ll protect you!” He laughed poking him in the stomach before his heart plummeted when he realised that they were being let on the rollercoaster. The man waving them on checked their wristbands nodding with a grunt motioning for them to be in the front car, the worst place in his opinion. He sat down quickly wrapping the metal bar over his legs as tightly as he could secure it positive that it wasn’t tight enough. It felt like if something happened he and Ohno would just slip right over the bar and plummet to their deaths.
“I’ll protect you…” Ohno chuckled repeating his words from a minute ago as he grabbed a hold of his hand while the worker came to check the bars. Nino almost wept when he seemed satisfied with theirs and the hand that wasn’t trying to squeeze Ohno’s to death was gripping the cold metallic of the cart with all his might. A loud gust of wind released from the machine and they lurched forward in the track heading for the impossibly large hill. It seemed to go on forever but eventually they were at the top “Open your eyes…” Ohno coaxed squeezing at his hand but Nino shook his head screaming at the top of his lungs when suddenly they dropped again plunging straight down.
