Sho poured himself a large glass of his father’s whisky that night, he knew that it was a risk but after the day that he had had he needed the drink to help calm his nerves. His father was leaving him, okay he wasn’t a child and it would only be for a few months…A few months while the palace was invaded by Nishimura and his two children…One of whom was going to break his heart. While Masaki had studied, writing about his kitten, Sho had also been studying flipping through the large who’s who of nobility. The Nishimura’s had taken a whole chapter to themselves. There had been a time when the Nishimura’s could have ruled the kingdom but instead they had supported the Aiba’s and their claim. From the book Sho had learned that the King and Duke Nobuyuki Ryou Kazunari Nishimura were once great friends but the death of Nishimura’s eldest son and heir, Kazunari Takehiko Shichiro, at only 15 years of age had soured the relationship with Nishimura blaming the king’s guard for not finding his son.
Sho had felt sick as he had read that, unable to believe that the boy they were talking about was really his own beloved adopted father. It didn’t seem real that Nino would have been raised a nobles son even if he did have a good education. The rest of the chapter had made for even less favourable reading as it listed the new heir, Nobuyuki Ryou, and his sister, Kazuko Asami, Kazuko it seemed was quite a famed beauty with several lines given up to describe her skin that was like moonlight and her hair as black as jet. Her list of accomplishments seemed never ending and at the tender age of 14 it was even more impressive. There was little doubt in Sho’s mind that the king would seek to repair his friendship with Nishimura by marrying his son to the girl and from what Sho had read it seemed that she would make the picture perfect queen.
Scowling at the wall with his mouth pulled into only a gash on his face Sho honestly and selfishly began to wish that he had been born a woman and that Nino decided to retake his claim as heir, he might not be Nino’s son by blood but he was his legal heir having been made so when he had first been taken in by the man. It had come when his biological father had come to the palace having been told by a tradesman that he was there and that his wife was dead. For one horrifying day Sho thought that he would have had to go back with the man that he was sure had killed his mother but Nino had solved it all by paying the man to release him. He still didn’t know how much he had paid for him, Nino had never said not even when he had cried into his arms and told him that he would pay him back. The older man had just laughed holding him tightly and whispering that he would have paid ten times as much for him. After that Jun had made everything legal.
Of course for Nino to reclaim his right as heir he would have to say how he had faked his death and that would mean Ohno and Jun being found out and more than likely killed for their part in the deception and it wasn’t as if he was even a girl anyway, he thought bitterly deciding that his brain was messed up from the alcohol and Masaki’s earlier crazy musings. Sho swallowed down what was left of the strong whisky and, in a moment of rage at the unfairness of everything, he threw the glass down into the fire place the droplets of drink causing sparks from the almost dead fire to fly up and crackle like the tongue of an orange lizard. His outburst did nothing to calm the feelings of hopelessness that was curling around inside of him and he kicked out at the stool opposite him before holding his head in his hands fat tears coming to his eyes.
He could already tell that before the year was out there was going to be an announcement of marriage and then there would be children. He was just going to be an onlooker into Masaki’s life for the rest of his own and now he wished that he could beg his father not to leave him to deal with it alone.
