“I’m sorry…About my sister…” Nino mumbled the next day when Jun had purposely sat himself next to him. Jun had to admit that the apology didn’t cover the feelings that he had inside of him now. Hoshi may have been as cute as her brother but she was as tough as any of his family and Jun felt as if he had been put through a trail and was still waiting for the verdict but none of that was Nino’s fault. He himself had a younger sister and he couldn’t deny that he would be just as protective of her as Hoshi was of her brother.
“It’s not your fault…Your sister was completely justified…” He murmured softly knowing that he had said the wrong thing when Nino’s hand slammed down onto the desk…Or at least the edge of the desk making it so his hands smacked hard against the edge in what Jun knew was going to be a very painful bruise when it came out and Jun reached out to caress it before putting his bottle of ice cold cola down over the bruise. Nino frowned trying to pull away as he growled out;
“No…No she really wasn’t…I’m not a child…I don’t need her to monitor me…”
“I don’t think you do need monitoring but…I think that I would be the same…” Jun admitted keeping the drink on his hand hoping to draw out some of the bruise before it became too bad.
“You would…” Nino mumbled half chuckled stopping fighting now “You’re some kind of creepy stalker…Well…I’m glad you were put off too much…She’s invited you for dinner tonight…”
“Dinner…?”
“Yup…I think that it was Oh-chan that persuaded her…” Nino shrugged and Jun thought about the gentle older man that had been in the café almost buffering some of the questions and pointed comments that Hoshi had been coming out with and Jun wondered where he had come into the life and how he had made it through the interrogation phase that must have been there “Um…You don’t have to come…”
“No…I’ll come…Um…” Jun swallowed down a lump from the back of his throat a stray thought coming into his mind “Will your parents be there?”
“…I hope not…” Nino grumbled chewing on the inside of his cheek “…I haven’t heard from them since I was blinded…” The smaller gave a shrug playing around with the computer that was in front of him and Jun stiffened surprised that he was being told so much information “It’s just been me, Nee-chan, Oh-chan for a long time...Oh-chan was the nurse in the hospital when I lost my sight…”
“And your sister married him?”
“Yeah…I guess they just hit it off while I was recovering…You do know that Nee-chan will be even worse when she’s at home…” Nino sighed his fingers running lightly over the strange device that showed little points of braille that Jun assumed matched what was on the computer screen. He had figured that the woman would be worse when they were alone but he had decided that it didn’t matter, he wanted to keep talking to Nino “You might wanna rethink your creepy stalker tendencies…”
“Nope…Sorry…I find you way too interesting…” Jun hummed watching the fingers move over the braille “How do you read that?”
“…It’s easy…” Nino said flushing just a little as he nibbled on the corner of his mouth his head shaking “Now at least…When I first started…It was almost impossible to understand…”
“Can you tell me?”
“Um it would be easier for you to feel…” Nino hummed holding out his hand and Jun stared at it for a while until the soft pink that filled his classmate’s cheeks grew an even deeper shade and he mumbled “Your hand…”
“Okay…” Jun agreed easily placing his hand in the smaller guys ignoring the strange jolt that moved over his skin at the delicate touch. He swallowed down a lump from the back of his throat and allowed Nino to move his hand over the little bumps that he had been touching a moment ago.
“Um...Vowels are assigned the braille patterns that occupy the upper-left half of the cell dots 1-2-4 in numerical order…Do you feel that?” Nino asked slowly and Jun gave a small nod feeling the tiny dots on the black computer touchpad. It felt strange and even with Nino explaining it still made very little sense but he had to admit that being this close to Nino and having his hand held by him was doing something unexpected to his senses and it took him a long time to try and refocus on the little dots “You’ve just read the first five letters of Braille's alphabet…Congratulations…”
“Wow…So…Everything is made up of just little dots?” Jun asked flushing at the praise and Nino gave a nod letting go of his hand as he rested back in his chair his finger tip-tapping over the desk.
“Yep…That’s the easy part…The rest…The consonantal diacritics, on the other hand, have no apparent connection to international values or numerical order, corresponding as they do to international punctuation and formatting marks…That’s when it gets complicated…” Nino gave a sigh his lips pursed and a few wrinkles formed in the centre of his eyebrows “…You can’t really be interested in all of this…”
“I am…” Jun put in quickly, wondering yet again why he was so interested in it all but he couldn’t stop himself “I want to know all about you…”
“…You sound like you want to flirt…” Nino mumbled his cheeks glowing a bright red and Jun’s followed his mouth dropping open as he found himself nodding strangely thankful that Nino couldn’t see him. “But sorry…I’m not interested…”
“…You don’t know yet, I managed to convince you to talk to me…” Jun allowed himself to continue talking though he had no idea what he was saying or why. Nino’s ears were practically burning now but he didn’t stay mystified for long and was soon jabbing him hard in the ribs and Jun chuckled rubbing the bruised ribs happy that he had gotten the reaction.
The rest of the day went smoothly, or as smoothly as he could expect with growing nerves about dinner with Hoshi and growing confidence about teasing Nino. When the lessons finally ended for the day Jun found his stomach swirling with nerves as Nino held onto his elbow allowing him to guide him out of the building. His stick was in his hands but it was clear that he wasn’t using it, instead putting all of his trust into him and Jun was determined not to let him down. He guided him through the swarms of students and teachers and out into the street where a grey car was waiting with Hoshi standing beside it her arms folded across her chest. Her eyes were covered with a pair sunglasses her fingers appeared to be tapping out the same beat that Nino did when he was stressed.
“Is my sister here?” Nino asked as they stopped in the middle of the courtyard and Jun nodded before answering;
“Yes…”
“Does she look happy?”
“Nope…Not much…” Jun admitted chewing on his lip again deciding to breathe deep and face the battle head on “Come on this way…”
