Romeo? Jun thought as he left the drama teacher in a strange kind of daze, he supposed that that wasn’t too bad at the very least he wouldn’t be the one in the dress but he still couldn’t believe that he was being almost strong armed into playing the role against another boy…The guy that was supposedly able to make even straight guys fall for him. Stumbling into his classroom he apologised to his teacher lamely explaining that Sakamoto had stopped him and his teacher, Koizumi Akio, nodded giving a faint smile.
“Ah yes…The school play with Turin high I believe…Sakamoto-sensei has been speaking about nothing else since she and her friend arranged it…Do you know who you’ll be playing?” The teacher asked causing Jun’s ears to burn uncomfortably hot as he looked around at the other students in the class before mumbling weakly;
“…Romeo…”
“Ah…You don’t look very happy for somebody that is playing the part of one of the greatest lovers in stage history…”
“I’ve always wanted to play Romeo” Jun admitted slowly wondering if the older man was trying to torture him for being late to his class. He wouldn’t put it passed the teacher as, even though he was well known for being one of the better teachers in school, Jun had found him very passive aggressive allowing people to embarrass themselves rather than punishing them outright and at this very moment the rest of his classmates were fidgeting around in their seats now whispering amongst themselves “But I always pictured my Juliet as being a girl”
“Well, apparently, according to Sakamoto-sensei, your co-lead Ninomiya, is meant to be as cute as any girl…Anyway as interesting as this is, find your seat as I would like to start my lesson…” Umami waved his wrinkled hand in a politely dismissive way, allowing Jun to drag himself to his table in the centre of the room and sit down before pulling out his school books as he completely ignored the looks that Aiba was giving him from his seat near the window. Koizumi began his lesson his voice droning on and on while Jun let his mind wander wondering once again what kind of person this Ninomiya Kazunari was. He was so lost in thought about the upcoming play that he was surprised to hear the bell ring cutting him out of his thoughts. A shadow fell over him and he wasn’t surprised when he looked up to find Aiba staring at him with a goofy expression on his face.
“Sakamoto-sensei has already given out the roles?! But we haven’t auditioned yet!” He said in an almost annoyingly loud voice that had Jun rolling his eyes at the same time he gave a shrug trying to work out what that had to do with him.
“She said that she picked based on what roles she thought us best in…” He mumbled scrapping his books into his bag and standing up. “I’m guessing that you’ll find out what role you’ve got in a few minutes don’t forget that we have rehearsals today…”
“Like I’d forget! You don’t even know that we had a play!” Aiba shouted out indignantly as they made their way to the exit and Jun gave a sigh tempted to slap his friend hard on the back of the head just for the fun of it. He had decided that he was going to do the play, after all if it all went tits up he would never get the chance again to play Romeo. He just hoped that this Ninomiya Kazunari was as good as they said. It seemed that the news of the play had already broken when they arrived into the drama room and it appeared that the rest of the club weren’t as uneasy about the play as Jun was, in fact most of them seemed to want to meet this Ninomiya as much as Aiba did.
“My sister’s friend’s brother goes to Turin and he said that Ninomiya is beautiful…” One of the guys sighed dreamily “Like a real idol…”
“I heard that he’s scouted to be an idol at least three times a month…Most producers think that his a girl though and none of them seem to care when they find out he’s not!” Another added his voice on the verge of being so excited and high that only dogs could hear it.
“And do they also say that rainbow appear when he walks?” Jun growled rolling his eyes as he dropped down into the sofa on the stage doubting that any guy alive could be anything like the fictional version of the star that they were creating in their minds. Aiba let out a laugh dropping gracelessly down beside him, his long legs sticking out a weird angles as he asked brightly;
“Aww is Junny jealous? You’re only scouted as a model twice a month aren’t you? Don’t worry though! You’ll always be our ice prince…”
“Shut up before I break your nose…” Jun spat glad when Sakamoto came sailing into the room the manic grin on her face and an almost sinister expression in her face. Under her arm were tucked the scripts and Jun felt his heart pulse once or twice as his mouth went dry with anticipation. A play, a real play on a real stage, he had to do it and do it well desperate to impress his parents and let them agree to his request to go to Drama College and then maybe become a stage actor. Aiba wasn’t lying when he said he was scouted twice a month, he was and by some big important agencies but that wasn’t what he wanted what he wanted was to be a stage actor…To have the thrill of the performance night after night knowing that something could go wrong and nobody would be able to edit it out.
“Aiba Masaki…You have the role of the narrator…” Sakamoto said without even bothering to announce what they were doing as she pulled out a script and handed it to the very happy looking Aiba who almost danced off the stage as he went to practice his lines in a very excited voice.
“Matsumoto Jun…Romeo…”
“Thanks sensei…” Jun murmured taking the script from her and adding seriously “I promise I won’t let you down…”
“Not me, don’t let yourself down…” Sakamoto nodded handing out the scripts and roles to the rest of the cast and behind the scenes members before clapping her hands together and saying “Tomorrow we will go and introduce ourselves to Turin high school’s drama department…Just come here as normal after classes are over and we will all go together…I expect you to all read through the play as much as you can tonight and remember to study your roles…Although I am hoping that our interschool rivalry won’t be a problem I will not have them say that Hitachi students were anything less than perfect…Right you may as well leave for now as you will be here longer tomorrow…”
Jun tucked his script in to his bag with more care than he had showed any of his school books and then went over to Aiba who was grinning like a flushing cat waving his script around.
“I got the part!”
“And I’m happy for you…” Jun smiled meaning it, Aiba wasn’t the most talented of the students in the drama club but he was sometimes the most enthusiastic always throwing himself into any role he got no matter how small and encouraging everybody else along with his overly happy personality. It was sometimes too much to cope with but at least he would never bored with Aiba being his best friend. “Wanna come over and read through?”
“Um…Sure! It will be fun! I wonder if they’ll make us wear the costumes!” Aiba said in more enthusiasm than anyone should be able to muster at the thought of wearing the kind of costumes worn in Romeo and Juliet. Visions of sky blue tights and puffy trousers floated around inside Jun’s mind making him more nervous than doing a love scene with Ninomiya.
“Of course…” Sakamoto said brightly coming up behind them and smacking him hard on the back “The theatre we’ll be using has a selection of costumes that we are free to use but for now focus on learning the script…You can worry about your tights later…”
