Kazu stared down in amazement at the strange letter. It wasn’t what he had been expecting but it made him happy all the same, he was happy to know where his nickname had come from though he doubted if he would ever be able to live up to such a title. He was also lost as to how to reply, he had man books that he had liked as a child he had spent hours in the pages wishing that he could go on the adventures with the characters but they felt flat given that Jun had revealed something so personal to him. There was one story…Nobody had told it to him he and Aiba had simply made it up when they had been confined to their room, it was a bit of foolishness really but it was personal and he knew that tomorrow he would write it down and give it to his courter. Smiling a little more brightly Kazu crushed the letter into his chest his eyes closing for a few minutes before he recollected himself looking up as he heard a cough.
“Sprite…” Jun said looking up with his one eye motioning down to the table in front of him “Is this correct?”
“…I will come…” Kazu nodded carefully placing his letter into the draw on what was quickly becoming his side of the bed Kazu hurried over to the man looking over the board and smiling when he saw that he had captured the king securely. “Yes…This would work…You still…Wi-wish to le-learn to play th-then…?”
“Yes…Now more than ever…I have to prove to my father that I am capable of thinking before reacting…” Jun nodded gripping the chess table and leaning over it her eyes fixed on the pieces. Kazu nodded slowly gulping when the eye came back up onto him deep and piercing as if he was searching his very soul “I do not regret what I did to Lord Ninomiya but…To allow him to almost get so much power over myself and my father…I cannot allow that…I refuse to make any more mistakes that could damage my father…”
“Hu-husband…” Kazu stammered before catching himself and taking a breath. As he had sat here earlier he had promised himself that he would gain more courage and face his husband boldly and to do that he had to be able to get over his nervous stammering every time he spoke to the man. “Husband…Your father was not disappointed in you…He was just worried that you would be killed…You are his precious son…”
“…I understand that but…I am a fool…” Jun grumbled his hand reaching up and touching at the bandage with irritation in the exposed part of his face. Kazu moved forward and gripped at his hands his heart beating so quickly he was sure that he was going to throw up again he managed to smile a little though and whispered gently;
“You are young…I think…I think that…That you are allowed to be a fool…But if you desire it I will continue to teach you but not tonight…”
“Sprite?”
“I can see that you are in pain my husband…I…I… know that the doctor is a skilled man beyond anything that I could do…” Kazu breathed gently his heart making that strange fluttering again knowing that what he was going to ask was almost for completely selfish reasons “But please allow me to see your wound…To see if I can do anything that may soothe it…”
“I hoped that you would wish so…The man is skilled but…I think your treatment was gentler…” Jun answered taking his hand in his own and leading him to the bed. Jun sat down on the mattress while very carefully Kazu removed the tight bandage from around his head. He was almost afraid of what he might see but to his great surprise and relief there was only a thin line of slit flesh held together with a row of very delicate stiches. It ran from right to left with the deepest cut under the right eye and he supposed that instead of a deep gash all across his face there would only be a one of about the length of his finger there. It was weeping slight and there was blood drying in clumps around what appeared to be bits of mud which he supposed was the reason for his husband’s discomfort.
“I will clean the wound with some alcohol…It will sting my husband but I promise that it will give you relief…” He whispered delicately running his finger over the enflamed skin under the wound his heart aching as he thought that this was for him. Jun had gotten this to save him.
“I…Am in your very small but capable hands, my sprite…” Jun smiled his lips brushing over the palm of the hand.

Masaki wished that the ground would swallow him whole as he was allowed down to the floor and the Sakurai’s watched him enter the room after his husband when he hadn’t seen them at dinner he had assumed that they had left but now that they had seen him in such a position as that with their son he imagined that any and all credibility he may have gained during the ball would have washed away. He wasn’t refined, he wasn’t meek or mild…Or any of the things people would want for their children but he was in love…He loved Sakurai with everything that he had inside him and it hurt that he was the reason Sakurai and his parents had fallen out. They seemed cold people to him and if he had met them in any other circumstance he still wouldn’t have liked them but they were his husband’s only parents and it made sense to him that their refusal to accept his choice of partner would hurt his husband.
“Would you like a drink…Lord Sakurai, Lady Sakurai?” He asked politely refusing to let his embarrassment and nerves get the better of him, even when their cold eyes turned to fix him with a stare.
“No…” The man said his head jerking back to Sakurai who had sat down in the wingback chair in front of the fire and was looking every inch the lord. Masaki smiled at him and then made the same offer going to the little wooden cabinet which he knew was stocked with all of his husband’s favourite drinks.
“Yes thank-you, my love…” Sakurai answered with a gentle smile that warmed his heart considerably before he turned to his parents and stared at them with the same cold stare they were using on them. “I had not thought you still in the palace…We did not see you at dinner…”
“We thought it inappropriate when a man lay dead in the house…As I understand it cake was served…” Lord Sakurai said stiffly and Masaki bit on his bottom lip remembering the beautiful cakes knowing that he should have realised that it was improper to serve such things when there had been a death.
“The man was a monster…An unfeeling monster and after what I have learned about him on the day of his funeral I will throw a party and dance…” Sakurai growled shocking all of the people in the room. Masaki’s hands trembled on the fine crystal bottle spilling some of the amber liquid onto the tray “I have had it on very good authority that you have pledged your soldiers to king…”
“Of course I have…Though I thought that you would have a different mind, given that you had married the ward of the house…”
“The prince married the son but he still killed him…I married Masaki because I loved him regardless of who he is tied to…If this is all you have come to say then leave…I will not listen to you anymore…” Sakurai growled standing up and pointing to the door.
“…No this is not why we came…Please let us talk and then we will leave…”
“Talk then…Make it quick…”
