Jun stared awkwardly down at the letter in front of him. He couldn’t believe how difficult it was to get something down on paper. He knew that the first couple of letters weren’t meant to be overly personal or complicated. It was supposed to just open up the lines of communication between them but as it stood he couldn’t even get passed the first line which was simply “Dear Sprite...” He wasn’t sure if using the established nickname would be too personal or not. He knew that as they were married there’s wouldn’t be a conventional courtship but he knew how important this was for Kazu and he was determined to do it right. Dipping his father’s sliver tipped pen back into the ink he let out a long and heavy sigh trying to think of something amusing to say to the man that he had already confessed his love to. The door to the study opened and he almost wasn’t surprised to see his father standing there looking at him with a smile on his lips.

“Son…How goes your letter writing?” The older man asked crossing the room and Jun was very tempted to blush but he was far too frustrated with his poor letter writing skills and all he could do was ask;

“You know about that?”

“Masaki told everybody that you were courting…Your brothers found it amusing but the rest of us think that it is a wonderful idea…” Ohno answered sitting down in the smaller chair at his side and glancing at the two words on the paper. Jun dropped down the pen and let out a small groan holding his head in his hands as carefully as he could around the bandage and the wound that was starting to ache painfully. It felt as if his entire face had been set on fire and although he had had a whiskey it had done little to nothing to ease the gentle throbbing that was there. He knew that maybe he should leave the letter for a few days…At least until his second eye was uncovered but pride and the desire to start winning over his husband was too strong.

“Kazunari asked and I agreed...” He sighed softly his breath moving the bandage around his mouth before he looked up pleadingly at his father “Of course when I did so I thought that I would actually have something that I could put in a letter…There is so much that I want to say to him but writing it down…It seems so foolish…Is there a chance that you would know what to say?”

“I have never courted…But I often wrote to your mother…I still do when I am troubled…Even though we are married and able to speak there is something about writing down your feelings…” Ohno admitted and Jun smiled fondly at his father who appeared to be blushing just enough to cause a blush in his cheeks. “My suggestion is forget the traditional rules of courting…You and Kazunari are already married so the first stalled letters are entitled to be a little more personal...If not that…Write a quote from your favourite book and then ask him for his…”

“…Thank-you…” Jun smiled taking the suggestion to heart as he picked up the pen again humming as he tried to remember his favourite part of his favourite childhood book. It came to him quickly and soon there was the sound of a pen scratching over parchment paper in the air.

“…Jun…You and Kazunari…Your marriage was arranged with little to no regard for your feelings or Kazunari’s…” Satoshi murmured gently breaking into his thoughts and Jun opened his mouth to tell him that it was okay but the king quickly continued before he could “But I watch you together and I see that you care for him and he does for you but…There is something else in you both…If you need to speak of it you know where I am…”

“I hurt him…On our wedding…Yuichi had been telling me lies about his brother and how he had taken many to his bed…” Jun whispered unable to look up from the paper as he wondered not for the first time how he could have believed such a vile and hateful person such as Yuichi “And I was angry with having to marry him…So…I…I took my marriage right...He was a virgin…and with everything else that we have learned of him now…I acted no better than his father…”

“Jun…”

“Please father…Do not try and justify my actions…I know what I did and I know that I have to make amends…” Jun gave his father a twisted little smile predicting what Ohno was wanting to say “But before you ask I am not doing this out of guilt…It has been only a short time but somewhere between then and now I have fallen in love with him…”

“I see…I am glad my son…And how are you from this morning?”

“Lord Ninomiya was a brute and a pig…I am not sorry that he is dead…” Jun growled the final words of the lord in his ears as he lightly tapped his fingers on the table “But…I am sorry that I acted so rashly and for the trouble that I may have caused…”

“Most of the trouble that might have caused ended when Lord Ninomiya fell…Had he lived or you died…It would have been more troublesome…” Satoshi shrugged putting his mind a little more at ease “Yuichi will bark like a rabid dog but he will be easily shot down…Finish your letter and then go to bed my son…”

“I will…Thank-you father…”

Sho rolled his eyes just a friction as he moved through the palace well aware that his husband had caused a stir among the nobles for speaking to the servant at dinner but he was tired of hearing the gossip that had spread so quickly. Masaki was friendly to a fault and he rarely saw a difference between the classes, nobles, royalty, or servants were all the same to his husband…They were people and people deserved to be treated with respect. More than one of the lords had suggested that he put a stop to it but he wouldn’t, the openness that Masaki had was just one of the many things that he loved about the man. Though he had to admit that his heart did jump strangely when he saw Masaki and the servant from earlier disappearing down a corridor together. Instead of getting angry he followed the pair slowly and relaxed again when he found that they were heading into the kitchens.

“...Masaki?” He called causing his husband to turn around in a mix of surprise and happiness. It would be impossible for him to get jealous over somebody that his husband wouldn’t even look twice at when his husband smiled at him like that.

“Sho!” He cried running back up the corridor to throw his arms around his neck “I came with Okura to talk to the cook…I want to ask for the recipe for that cake…I was hoping that I could try and make it when we are at home…” Sho gave a smile and kissed at Masaki’s temple knowing that when he said he was going to try and make it, it would actually be him that was going to make it and not their cook. Taking his husbands hand he led him down the last couple of feet to the kitchen surprised by the surprise that the servant gave him. The cook and kitchen staff looked at them in surprise for a few moments but all at once Masaki put everyone at ease by just smiling at them and saying; “I apologise for intruding but I wanted to thank you for the food it was amazing and I was hoping that you would give me the recipe for that wonderful cake?”
