“You killed him!” Yuichi snapped grabbing him by the collar and pulling him to his feet and Jun stared blankly into his face through one eye the other already closed up as pain flowed through him. There was a warm sticky wetness on his cheeks and lower jaw and he knew for certain now that he had been sliced open but he had no idea how bad it was. “It was only until first blood…”

“Accidents happen in any duel, Lord Yuichi…Judging from the angle of the blade on my son it did not appear that your father was going for first blood either…” Satoshi said coldly coming over to them and gripping Yuichi’s shoulder so tightly that it had to be painful “Do you wish to seek satisfaction here and now or do you wish to treat your father’s body with respect and have it removed into the palace before there is a crowd..?”

“Forgive me, your majesty of course I will remove my beloved father’s body…Mother can help me…” Yuichi said in the same fake simpering voice that his father had used and for now Jun was thankful for it as it meant that for now at least Yuichi hadn’t decided that he was going to challenge the king. Jun was sure though that once he had gotten back to his castle and surrounded by his own men he would come to the conclusion that he would want to seek the satisfaction he wanted for his father’s death.

“Your mother has no connection to you now…” Jun growled glad that when he was released Sakurai and Masaki were there to support him. His arms were around the pair and they helped him to stumble away from the courtyard to Kazu who had removed glued to the spot his eyes fixed on the man that had tortured him. “Sprite?”

“He…He…I…” Kazu spluttered swaying slowly and Jun watched his father hurry to his side and pick him up before he fainted completely.

“I will send men to assist you…Lady Kazuko…”

“I…Yes…I am…Coming…” The woman whispered looking as faint as her son but she still managed to carry herself with dignity walking over the courtyard to her son and dead husband. She paused for a moment staring at the dead body her hand reaching out to Yuichi who slapped it away snapping;

“Leave then whore…”

“Please forgive me…Forgive me for not having the strength or will to love you, my son…” The woman whispered sounding tearful as she looked at her hand and the red welt that had formed there. “Goodbye my husband…I hope that your spirit will find what it deserves…” It was such a simple saying but one that could have two meanings depending on who heard it and then she was walking towards them her head held high her eyes fixed on his face “My prince, you should have that seen to straight away…I would not put it past my former husband to have coated some oil on the blade…”

“Yes my lady…” Jun whispered wishing he hadn’t when the burning pain that he was feeling grew worse and more blood ran down his chin dropping onto the floor. He was half carried into the palace and spirited through the servants’ passages back into his bedroom with Ohno carrying Kazu and the doctor and Kazuko following behind. He and his husband were placed on their bed together and the doctor quickly began to treat his wound making sure to wash it out before carefully sowing the skin together. Jun kept his focus on his pale faced husband not registering the pain until he fell into a weird pain filled sleep, his hand clenched tightly around Kazu’s.

*~*~*~*~**~

Kazu’s eyes opened as he felt a familiar gentle hand moving over his face and a soft voice murmuring reassurances. It took him a moment to focus and realise that he was in his room. Sunlight was streaming in from the window and he panicked positive that the last couple of hours had been a dream and that Jun had had missed the meeting for the duel. Panic rushing through him he sat up and turned to face his husband about to shake him awake when he saw bandage wrapped around his husband’s handsome face.

“Hu-Husband?” He breathed gently reaching out for him until he heard a rustling beside the bed and he turned again surprised to see his mother sitting in the chair beside him. “Mother…”

“Yes…I am glad to see you awake, my son…” Kazuko smiled leaning forward and squeezing his hand causing him to realise that it hadn’t been a dream, his husband had faced his father and killed him.

“…Fat…Lord Ninomiya is dead…” He breathed slowly gripping at the blanket so heard that his knuckles went a funny shade of white while his mother nodded slowly the smile slipping from her lips as her eyes clouded over.

“Yes…Your husband performed spectacularly…But I fear the repercussion of the action…Yuichi is much like his father…He will not let this stand…” She told him, saying the same thing that they already knew. “The country will be at war before the month is out…”

“The king…He…Was the one that told my husband…I think he is prepared for war…” Kazu whispered trying hard not to wake his husband knowing that he would need the rest. He had never seen a duel before but he knew from watching the lord fight that it had been a furious battle on both parts. “You…You are free now…My husband told me that he was fighting for your freedom…”

“…He was fighting for you…I was just a secondary bonus…But yes…I am free…” The woman said the smile returning as she grabbed a hold of his hand again their fingers linking tightly “And so are you…Your brother never held the same fear for you that my husband did…He is did Kazunari he can never hurt either of us again…”

“The…Wounds will never go away though…The scars will always be there…” Kazu whispered thinking of the scars that decorated his back. Like his mother said they were free now, completely free with no chance of ever having to confront Lord Ninomiya again but they would always have the marks to tell them that they were weak.

“Of course they will and you would never want them to go because they are proof that it happened and that you survived and are alive…” Kazuko moved from the chair and sat down on the edge of his bed her arms coming up to wrap around his shoulders tightly so he could rest his head on her shoulder. “You are alive and have somebody that was prepared to die for you, a family that loves you…Never forget that…The past is in the past and now the future is bright for us all…”

“Even though we will enter a war…” Kazu mumbled almost swallowing some of his mother’s hair, which was once again uncovered from the lacy cap and was flowing down her back and shoulders in black waterfalls. Kazuko chuckled her arms tightening around him as she let out a low and thoughtful hum saying;

“It will be a war that your brother cannot win…He will have the men for only a short time before they realise that although he tried to act like my former husband if does not command the power he does…The Ninomiya’s are finished…Now…Your husband is waking…I will leave you two alone but I will return later…”

Thank goodness Jun won. If Lord Ninomiya had it'd be a total disaster.

One thing though - wouldn't it be a rebellion? Not a war? Well, Yuichi won't win anyhow.

And thank goodness Nino's mother is now free. That poor woman.
