“Wow! So many of them!” Masaki squealed loudly as he watched all of the little squat puppies wriggling and yapping in the box that they were kept in. The house that the carriage had brought them to was a small farm house just outside the small village that was a few miles away from their home. The couple were shy and nervous around them both but their dogs were well cared for if a little bigger than he had imagined. Fluffy black and white collies. The farmers on the Ninomiya estate had used Collies as working dogs for the farms and he had never imaged them being very good lap dogs.
“They are easy to train my lord…And are fiercely loyal…” The farmer said softly and Masaki smiled before giggling happily when one of the puppies bumped his head against his hand.
“…They are beautiful…But…A little bigger than I was hoping for…” He breathed reluctantly doubting that Sakurai would want a collie running around his home even if they had the land to walk it regularly. The puppy licked the palm of his hand and then yapped again puppy breath flowing over him making his heart ache even while he tried to convince himself the puppy wasn’t for him. Its brothers and sisters were running around chasing their tails and barking in the little puppy barks that only puppies could “And more active...I…Am sure my husband would not want…”
“Oh come, my husband, you will be more than a match for any puppy and it is not as if our home is too small for such a large dog…” Sakurai laughed kneeling down beside him his hand resting on the small of his back the heat of his body seeping through the clothes that they were wearing and Masaki gave a smile looking up at him with shining hopeful eyes as the puppy moved over to bark and wag his tail at Sakurai “You are a beautiful little pup ne, you will be no trouble…”
“No my lord, I am sure that the dog will be happy in your home with all the ground to run freely around in…And I am sure that the young lord will be kept very happy…My dogs are the finest in the shire…” The farmer said sounding much more confident now that it seemed certain that one of his pups would be leaving with the young lords and it became even more settled when Masaki picked up the pup that had already captured his heart. It had captured it from the moment he had come into the barn and out of all of the beautiful puppies there this one had ran over to him stumbling over its own legs. The puppy wiggled against him licking at his jaw his tail wagging frantically against his leg moving so much that it was like he was being whipped by the pup.
“We will take him…” Sakurai said patting Masaki on the back as he got back to his feet “You did not send a price in your letter…”
“Oh no my lord…We could not possibly accept payment…” The farmer spluttered as frantically as the pup was wigging his tail “It is a gift…For the happy occasion of your marriage…Please accept it with our compliments…”

Kazu stared down at the letter in his hand his eyebrows creased into a deep frown honestly surprised to be holding something like this. It looked old with the paper already brittle and the name printed in the careful beautiful handwriting of his mother faded and patchy in places. It said simply ‘Kazunari’ and he puzzled how long it had been in Yun’s possession and why he hadn’t mentioned it before. He turned the letter around in his hand and his fingertips soon brushed over a wax seal which held the impression of a bird and flower the crest of his mother’s family he realised after some thought his finger poking at the delicate looking bird.
“Sprite...” Jun called to him gently pulling him from his thoughts to look up at him with a very tiny smile that reached nowhere near his eyes “Would you like some time alone to read your letter?”
“…N-No…Yo-You are my h-husband…” Kazu answered softly feeling the slight roll of nerves inside of him making him a little sick even though he was trying hard to stop it “Th-There should be no se-secrets between us…Yo-You said so yo-yourself…”
“I did…” Jun smiled taking his hand and bringing it to his mouth in a very delicate kiss on the back “But I did not mean a private correspondence between you and your mother, my sprite, I am not your father and I will never ask that…”
“I know…” Kazu nodded with more confidence than he had felt before knowing that no matter what he had thought of him before Jun was nothing like his father was. Without another word he pulled on the flap of the letter breaking the wax seal with a great amount of difficulty and then unfolded the thick parchment his mother’s handwriting coming into view instantly. It was as beautiful as his name was on the front and he breathed deeply through her nose.
“Kazunari…” He read slowly his eyes moving over each of the letters noticing how jerky and hesitant they were on the page "My darling boy, how much I have wanted to tell you this to your face but I lacked the courage, you are my one joy in life Kazunari and I could not take the pain that might have been found if you learned the truth and then turned from me” Kazu swallowed down the sickly lump from his throat his head shaking violently as he told himself that that could never happen, there could be nothing that his mother could ever tell him that would make him turn from her. In his heart he already knew what the rest of the letter would say but he couldn’t bring himself to read on, until he felt a gentle arm wrapping around his shoulders and he was brought down into the warm chest of his husband. The slow and steady thud of his heartbeat washed over him and he breathed deeply closing his eyes and enjoying the warmth for a moment or two before he opened his eyes again and read on “My son, I am sure, or at least I hope, that you are thinking that there is nothing I could to make you think ill of me. But the truth is my son you are not the son of my husband…I…In my shame I loved another and strayed from my marriage bed and into his…You have I am sure wondered why you were always treated with such hate by the man you called father…And finally I am able to tell you the truth of it…You are the bastard son of Aiba Mamoru…Masaki’s father…” Kazu blinked slowly having to re-read the same line a few times. He had expected it when the letter had started but to see it so clearly in print was another thing altogether.
“Well, sprite…That explains a few things…” Jun said slowly reminding him that he was there beside him and Kazu swallowed looking up at him his mind swimming so much that he was sure that he was about to faint again. “Come here my beautiful little sprite…” The prince whispered and before he could take a breath Kazu was pulled into a deep kiss hot arms wrapping tightly around him holding him close and keeping him from falling.
