Sequel to Our First Summer

Ninomiya Kazunari stared at his reflection in mirror wondering what the hell he was doing about to get married to a teenager. Okay officially he was adopting Jun into his family but it was the same deal really. He knew that he looked good for his age, even if his was 37 now. He hadn't hit 40 yet but it was only a matter of time what was going to happen then? When he was fifty Jun was only going to be 32...what if his looks vanished he was already positive that he had spotted a grey hair. This had to be the worst idea since bad ideas had started. Even if Jun loved him they couldn't stop time.

"Are you panicking yet?" Ohno asked soft sliding into the room a smile on his face. The last year had done him the world of good he was happier and more relaxed and although it was impossible for them to forget the past at least they had both accepted it now and moved on again as friends.

"Oh-chan! I can't do this...I can't tie him down to me! I can't...it is all romantic and stuff now but when he wakes up one day and sees a wrinkled old man..." Nino asked pretty sure that he had had this freak out before and Jun had said something really clever that had reassured him but right now he couldn’t remember what that was and he was about ready to start throwing up. Ohno let out a chuckle that was completely inappropriate for the situation and Nino glared at him as he said;

"He'll never see that, Kazu..."

“Okay and know you and Masa think I hold the secrets to eternal youth but I don’t…” Nino hissed pacing backwards and forwards almost hitting the corner of the bed. The bed that held two full body pillows along with about a dozen scatter cushions that were way too small to be of any real use but Jun seemed to like regardless. Every room in the house had them in some form and sometimes it made him wonder if he had been right in leaving all creative control to his lover. The house was wonderful, it was smart without being a show house and their bedroom was filled with recreations of all his parents bric-a-brac, something that had honestly made him cry to see the first time knowing that his lover must have sat shifting through thousands of pictures to find or have made for him. It was a sign of how much Jun loved him but that didn’t comfort him at the moment “…I found a grey hair the other day…”

“Really? I’ll alert the authorities…” Ohno teased in a far too easy way and Nino’s eyes narrowed sharply again as he growled staring at his friend wordlessly for a moment before he bit out sarcastically;

“Haha…Very bloody funny…You’ve been spending too much time with Toma he’s corrupted you…”

“…Maybe…But right now teasing you is a lot of fun…And you missed my point…Yes, you’ll grow old Kazu and yes…Unless you resort to plastic surgery you’re going to get wrinkles” Ohno laughed again as Nino frowned his eyebrows knitting together knowing that he would never resort to plastic surgery “but…They won’t matter and Jun…If he loves you as much as you love him then Jun won’t even see them…As they say…Love is blind…”

“When did you get so smart anyway?” Nino sighed sinking down onto the bed and picking up one of the scatter pillows that was decorated with soft pastel coloured butterflies suddenly wondering if he was marring a fussy old woman over a teenager.

“About the same time that I had this argument with Toma…” Ohno answered with a chuckle his fingers scrapping through his hair as he sat down beside him taking his hand “He pointed out that I already had grey hairs and a few wrinkles but he didn’t care…Apparently I was being vain…and thinking that he was shallow…”

“…I guess that’s what we are too vain old men…” Nino chuckled feeling better than he had since he woke up as he rested his head on Ohno’s chest wondering if this was how his daughter had felt a week ago. Sho and Masako had left after the reception in a speedboat that was taking them to his yacht and as far as he was aware they hadn’t returned yet. He was sure that they would before the weird wedding started or at least he hoped so as he couldn’t even imagine his wedding without his daughter.

“37 is not old…Now stop being so self-pitying…and…Let’s have a drink…” Ohno chuckled somehow managing to pull a flask from the depths of his pocket. It was silver and engraved with some weird designs and he supposed that it was gift from Toma, it wasn’t the kind of thing that Ohno would buy for himself. “Toma brought it for me…To keep me warm when I’m on the boat…”

“Nice of him…” Nino smiled genuinely happy for his friend’s happiness and even more so when the cap was released and the strong scent of old whisky filled his nostrils. Jun would freak if he found out but he supposed that a little drop of liquid courage would be okay on his wedding day.

“Do you remember…The first time you got drunk?” Ohno asked swallowing from the flask before handing it over to him and Nino let out a snort of laughter sipping the warm drink that went straight down to the pit of his stomach burning his pipes and curling his toes a little before he answered;

“When you stole the beer from your dad’s secret stash?”

“Yeah…We went down to the beach…You were gone after one beer…” Ohno chuckled fondly while Nino pulled a face wincing at the memory, he had been as sick as a dog.

“I remember…I also remember that I threw up all over your shoes and you were too scared to tell your parents…”

“You had to pretend to have a stomach bug for a week and then dad realised his drink had gone…”

“He never did tell your mum…I’m sorry they got divorced…” Nino sighed though it wasn’t true he wasn’t sorry, the woman hadn’t been arrested for her part in what had happened but she had lost everything. Her husband had walked out on her and she had already alienated herself from Ohno.

“I’m not…Dad…I was never particularly close to him but…We’ve found out that there’s a lot that we enjoy the same so I guess that it’s not all that bad…He’s here you know…” Ohno told him much to his surprise. He had never expected the older Ohno to come to his gay wedding even if he had never seemed that disgusted by him. His surprise only grew when Ohno flushed brightly and hummed “In fact he was trying to convince me to do the honest thing with Toma…”

“Are you?”

“…I…Not sure…But it doesn’t matter today…Today is your wedding day…Where are you going for your honeymoon?” Ohno asked getting to his feet and urging him up into what was almost the same jacket as he had worn for his daughter’s wedding. The only difference between the two was the colour. During Masako’s wedding it had been black but now it was a light grey and he was just thankful that Jun hadn’t wanted white.

“World tour…Jun had way to many dream places that he couldn’t decide so we decided that we’d do all of them…” Nino answered with a shrug sounding as if that was the most normal thing in the world to do for a honeymoon. Jun had protested about it immensely but at the end of the day the teen had planned the wedding so the honeymoon was up to him and he wanted to fulfil as many of Jun’s dreams as possible. Of course they wouldn’t be able to stay long in the places that they visited but at least they would be able to get a taste of each place to give his lover some ideas where he would want to visit properly in future.

“…How long will you be away?” Ohno whistled and Nino gave another shrug attaching the unruly corsage of yellow and purple flowers to his lapel that thick knot of nerves collecting in his stomach again as he tried to breath.

“About half a year…We haven’t decided…” He mumbled his eyes going to the clock on the wall a shiver running down his spine when he realised that it was almost time. “Is Masa here yet?”

“Not yet…Or at least not when I came up…I spoke to Sho this morning though and they said that they were going to be here…” Ohno told him and Nino gave a nod smoothing his hair out again before ruffling it up frowning when Ohno swooped in close staring at the flowers with an almost pout on his face and Nino knew immediately what his friend was staring at “What’s that in your flowers?”

“It’s Jun’s button from his school jacket…” Nino answered his cheeks burning brightly as Ohno let out a howl of laughter something close to tears forming in his eyes. “He gave it to me on his graduation…”

“Aww that’s so cute…”

“Shut up…” Nino growled turning away from his friend and fingering the button with a smile before letting his hand away so he could mutter “Where the hell is Masako…”

“I’m here Papa!” Masako shouted running breathlessly into the room looking as brown as nut and happy in a soft pastel green dress with roses around the hem. “Wow you look gorgeous papa!”

“Don’t I always? You look different? Are you using screen?” He asked his eyes running over her bare arms seeing that she wasn’t using sunscreen but Masako just laughed hugging him tightly and kissing his cheek.

“…Yes I’m using protection…So stop worrying about it…It’s your wedding day…!”

“I’m well aware of that…Have you seen Jun yet?” Nino asked hopefully. He refused to have the same reaction that Masako had done but he was just as terrified as his daughter that Jun hadn’t turned up. Masako shook her head playing around with his hair for a moment before saying;

“No…I came straight up here to you…But I know he’s here…One of the caterers was muttering about him…”

“Saying what exactly?”

“I’m not sure…I think Jun was hard on him…Sho-chan dealt with it…So stop looking scary…Do you remember your vows?”

“…I didn’t make one…” Nino said honestly. He had tried but everything that he had put down onto paper had just seemed like a joke and he refused to have that on his wedding day “I thought I’d wing it…I’m positive that inspiration will strike when I’m looking at J…So you stop looking so scary…Come on it’s time to go down…”

“…How are you not freaking out? I was a mess…” Masako whined and Ohno let out a betraying laugh coming over to her and whispering;
“Your dad is just pretending…When I came in he was having a panic attack…”

“Traitor…”  Nino grumbled kicking out at his friend as he left through the door leaving him and Masako alone. “He’s right I was panicking a little but I’m fine now…I’m just eager to get this whole thing over with…”

“…How romantic…” Masako said sarcastically and Nino shrugged letting out a hum as he said;

“I am romantic, to J…and that’s all that matters…”

“Come on…Then…Why are you getting married in the garden? The beach would be…” Masaki asked and Nino grinned a little wickedly his eyes flashing as he remembered back to last year and the suntan lotion.

“The garden is where I first propositioned Jun…”

“Oh…Right…Um…Forget I asked…”

“You asked...Come on then princess…Going to walk me down?” Nino laughed offering out his arm and Masako giggled wrapping her own around his tightly walking him to the door as she cried.

“Of course!”

The walk from the bedroom to the kitchen seemed to be the longest walk of his life although it only lasted a few minutes in reality. His heart was moving so fast that if anyone were to check it he was sure they would find that his blood pressure had shot up again. There wasn’t as many guests here to celebrate their wedding as there had been at Masako’s but for him that was a good thing. He had few friends and even less people that he wanted to share this with and Jun had only wanted to share it with his family who were all present and smiling dressed in summer clothes while his Jun was looking fantastic in a matching grey suit looking flushed and nervous as he walked towards him still holding Masako’s arm tightly. The officiator was the same man that had done Masako’s wedding and although this wasn’t official he had offered his services last week and they hadn’t been able to refuse.

“So here we are again…In a very beautiful setting to join two people that love each other in marriage…Although this is not a legal ceremony I take great pride in being able to join you and…As I have been informed by the young groom the couple have prepared their own statements so…Ninomiya-san…”

“Jun…Jun should go first…” Nino said quickly his mind still blank as he looked at his nervous lover who scowled a little and pulled out a folded piece of paper and cleared his throat.

“Kazu…It’s only been a year since we got together and there are days when I want to kill you…You’re still a flirt and you would do anything but take care of your health…But…That’s okay because I know that when you flirt you only do it when I’m there because you like making me angry…I know that you wouldn’t even look at anybody twice without me being there…” Jun read carefully and Nino couldn’t help the laugh that left his throat knowing that it was true. He only flirted now to get a reaction from Jun to see his scowl so he could kiss his pouty lips. “…I know that a lot of people wouldn’t understand us…but that doesn’t matter because I love you and I want to spend the rest of my life letting you drive me crazy…I think that this isn’t romantic but I know that’s okay too, I know that I’m not your first love or even your second but we’re perfect together so…Please marry me…”

“I will…Of course I will…” Nino laughed blinking away a stupid tear that had formed in his eyes and his other hand darted out grabbing a hold of both of Jun’s as he swallowed a knot from his throat and sighed closing his eyes for just a second before fixing his gaze on Jun. “…Jun, you are not third best…Not to anyone…I…You are the only person that I could love this much…You are the only person who I would want to love this much…I didn’t even realise that I could be this much in love with another human until I met you…There are things in my life that I can’t or wouldn’t change but…You are more important than them…I have loved you since I saw you standing with a full body pillow and painkillers…And I’m going to keep loving you until I stop breathing…So please marry me and never think that you’re not the love of my life because you are…”

“Um…Yeah…I’ll…Marry you…” Jun whispered and Nino smiled squeezing his hands before letting them go and taking the ring that Masaki offered to him. It was a simple band of white gold etched on the underside with the date and time of their wedding but it became something special when it was placed on Jun’s finger just like when Jun slid the matching one onto his finger. For a moment it felt weird and cold against his skin but it soon warmed against him and he gave a smile looking at his husband before pulling him forward and bringing their mouths together. Aware that Jun’s parents were watching he kept it light but loving unable to believe that he was married again. Their tongues danced for a moment their hearts skipping in the same rhythm until they pulled a part flushing and breathless as happy cheer rose up. “You’re mine now…”

“I have been since our first summer together, J…But now…It’s official…”
