Aiba Masako stared at her reflection in the mirror her heart fluttering like a baby bird about to leave the nest. After a long year of waiting, doubts and a few arguments today was finally her wedding day and she was terrified. She knew that she was making the right choice, she had known that since she was a child, but that didn’t stop the nerves hitting her with the force of a sledge hammer. She wasn’t even nineteen yet and she was about to sign her life away. She heaved out a long sigh dropping like a stone onto the bed and playing with the light purple bedspread while looking around the room that was technically her room but was done up like a very welcoming spare. It was completely different from her old room and it had been a shock when she had first come into it though she wasn’t sure why when she had known that the house was completely different. Gone was the overly bright painted walls and easy to maintain garden of potted plants and in its place stood a strange fusion of what Jun called country Tudor the Edo period. It was stunning hose with cream walls and polished black wood. The inside was completely modern but off set with period pieces. With an endless budget and a partner that was willing to go along with everything that he wanted Jun had been in his element and when he hadn’t been at school studying so he could go into alternative medicines he was with Nino talking over the plans. Masako had never seen him so excited but it had been good as in the garden away from the main section of the house was another smaller house that was for her and Sho’s use when they were finally married. Married the though brought her back to herself with a bump her eyes closing tightly as she groined biting on her lips and clenching her hands tightly as she unsuccessfully tried to will the feeling away.
“Nervous sweetheart?” Her father asked and she looked up gratefully to see Nino standing in the doorway looking very handsome in a black suit and white shirt that had a splash of colour with a gold sash around his waist and a golden bow tie that wasn’t tied properly.
“…What are you doing here? I though Jun needed your help…?” She asked smiling when Nino rolled his eyes and shook his head moving into the room and closing the door.
“He has enough help…I want to be here…Your mum would be as well but the baby puked…So she needed another shower…” He said laughing a little and Masako gave a snort of laughter thinking about her little brother who was a little fat thing that drooled all the time and screamed if he didn’t get his own way.
“…He’s cute though, ne? Little Kazunari…”
“Yup...But you were far cuter…” Nino said sitting down beside her and pulling her into a hug that felt overly warm but perfect. Her eyes closed again her face resting on his shoulder his fingers moved her the curls in her hair. She let out a giggle her arms going around his chest as she nuzzled her nose against him.
“You’re just saying that…”
“Because it’s true…The most beautiful baby in the world…I fell in love with you the moment that you were placed in my arms…All covered in slime and bright blue…” It was something that she had heard a lot but right now she needed to hear it again “My Masako…And now…I’ve got to let you go…I wouldn’t do that to anybody that didn’t deserve you…Sho deserves you…”
“I know…I know but…I don’t want to lose you…” She whispered wishing that she could cry but was too worried about ruining her make-up.
“I’m not a sock, Masa…Or some change that you can drop down the sofa…I’m always going to be there for you…” Nino whispered arms tightening around her and Masaki sniffed once and then twice taking a breath “And you know that you don’t have to worry about me…I have the drill sergeant-major that will take care of me…”
“I know…I don’t know why I’m being like this…I’m really happy I am but…It’s weird…”
“You’re a weird person…” Nino teased lightly gripping her cheeks with his hands and tilting her face up “You are now and will always be my baby, Masako and nothing with make you lose that…”
“I found my prince but you will always be king…” Masako smiled remembering the saying that she had been reading on the internet just the other day. It had felt true at the time but it felt even more so now. Nino grinned nodding happily as he bopped her on the tip of her nose.
“Exactly…Now smile brightly and marry the person that you have loved since you were a child and…Look the other way if I have a beer later…” He said winking and Masako let out a loud laugh her head cocking to one side as she asked;
“…Are you allowed?”
“If Jun doesn’t notice…”
“If Jun doesn’t notice what?” Jun asked suspiciously from the doorway and the effect on Nino was startling he jumped up from the bed and straightened himself completely like an arrow flushing brightly as his mouth opening and closing. Masako almost laughed at the desperate little pleading looks that she was getting. It was a big joke and she knew it something that they had fallen into a lot since last year but sometimes Jun could be a little too strict on him even though she knew that her father was addicted to that bossy side of his lover.
“Um that he was missing…You don’t need him do you?” She said grabbing a hold of her dad’s hand holding it tightly and Jun’s eyes narrowed into little cat like slits before he shook his head and gave a smile.
“Nah…We’re all done now…Just waiting for the groom…”
“He’s not here?! He’s not coming! Oh god he’s not coming…” She wailed tears falling very quickly as her heart broke. She knew that something bad was going to happen. She had had a horrible feeling since she had woken up and now it wasn’t coming true.
“Of course he’s coming…”
“Is already here…You’re an idiot and didn’t let me finish…We’re just waiting for the groom to go down to the beach…” Jun said clicking his tongue and dragging a purple handkerchief from his pocket and drying her eyes and she blinked at him breathing slowly as she asked;
“Really? He’s really here?”
“Yes…He’s here and just as nervous as you are…So stop crying and come here your make-up has run…” He said with a smile stroking her face while Nino hugged her tightly and hissed her cheek.
Half an hour later she was back to fighting fit standing on top of a mahogany staircase her hand resting on the wood the butterflies dancing inside her stomach. Nino was standing just behind her his hand resting on the small of her back.
“Come on my little princess…It’s time for you to get married to your prince…” Nino told her gently and Masako nodded taking a breath and taking a step down the stairs. The house was so strange now with none of the things that she remembered from her childhood but it still felt the same.
“Okay, my king…” She giggled taking his hand. Together they moved down the stairs. “Jun really made it beautiful…”
“He did…It still feels weird I walked into a cupboard instead of a bathroom yesterday but…I’ll get used to it…” Nino chuckled as they reached the bottom step and found themselves in a hall that led out into the back-garden. That too was completely different from the way it had been last summer, there was still a swimming pool but it was now kidney shaped with the smaller end a Jacuzzi and the small house at the end. At the moment it was all decorated with brightly coloured ribbons and balloons in the shape of daisies making a path down to the beach. The nervous excitement flooded through her again as she walked to the gate her fingers brushing a sign that had been hand painted by Ohno. It showed both her and Sho as children playing around on the beach they were just about to walk on.
The steps leading to the beach were different to, made of metal and with a proper handle that was cool to the touch. From here she could see the beach and all of the people that were there waiting for her wedding. Most of the staff from the fair had come along with all her friends from the school clubs she was on and from here it looked like a sea of hair. Only Sho was obscured by a pristine white marque and she swallowed down a lump her feet tapping on the metal of the stairs. For some reason she counted them as she went realising that there were two more than they had been previously and that the angle was different.
Her mum was waiting for her at the bottom of the stairs dressed in a pretty floor length pink dress her figure already returned after having Kazunari. She smiled brightly at her holding up a small posy of pink, blue, yellow, and red flowers that were surrounded by deep green leaves and held together with a green silk ribbon, the same ribbon that was tied into a bow around Masako’s waist.
“You look so beautiful, baby…” The older woman whispered sounding tearful as she handed her the flowers and Masako flushed a little bit smiling happily. “Okay…I am not going to cry…”
“Yes you are…”
“Humh! So are you!”
“More than likely…” Nino nodded his arm tucking into Masako’s his head resting against the shoulder “But Jun’s already got that covered…Or so he tells me...Come on, Ma-Ma…Let’s get our little girl to her Sho…”
“Yup...Ready sweetheart?”
“I feel sick…” Masako admitted touching her stomach with her free hand terrified that she was going to throw up all over Sho now.
“It will pass…Just breathe…” Nino chuckled stroking her arm as he urged her forward over the carpet that had been laid on the sand over wooden planks. There was still a few grains of sand on it but it was easier to walk on than the sand would be and she was thankful that Jun had suggested it. They walked slowly to the wedding area with her heart spending most of its time in her mouth and when they met the first line of guests she was sure that she was going to faint. “You’ll be fine…Look...He’s waiting for you…your second love...isn't he perfect? No body but the best for my first love...” Nino whispered nudging her side and pointing at the end of the carpet when Sho was standing with his father acting as best man with Toma as another grooms man. Masako’s heart settled immediately as Sho turned to look at her. He was dressed in the same kind of suit as her father and Jun but with a red sash and bow tie instead, he looked even more handsome to her than normal and it took all of the strength that Nino had to stop her from just marching forward and to take the gentle steps that they had rehearsed. It felt like a horrendously long time before they made it to her fiancé and it was even longer before Nino let her go. He held her hands tightly staring into her face looking like he was going to start crying there and then and Masako swallowed before she was suddenly released with Nino moving away from her and handing her hand to Sho’s before moving back completely and heading over to Jun who was already holding his arms out to him. Masako gave a grin and then swallowed as she looked at Sho who was grinning widely.
“Shall we begin?” The officiator said smiling and Masako nodded just a little swallowing as she ran her tongue over her lips. The words of the man lost out to the beating of her heart but soon she was being urged to speak and she swallowed again trying desperately to remember what she had written down and practiced before.
“I…I forgot what I wanted to say…I had it all written down and it was going to be cringe worthy and cheesy just like we said but…All I can think is…I…I love you…I’ve loved you since I was tiny and I want to keep loving you until I’m old so…ah wait there's also...it was right here...I was six and you were twelve...I..." Masako whispered looking around at Jun who stepped forward holding out a daisy chain ring "right here I said 'Now you’re mine...Nobody else is allowed Sho-chan ‘cause you’re my second love and we’re engaged...so know in front of my first love I want to say that again...you have always been my second love so...um marry me…”
“Yes…Yes I’ll marry you…” Sho laughed squeezing her hand before she slipped the daisy chain ring onto his finger. Sho smiled clearing his throat and saying "You’ve always followed me around…Every time I turned around you were there like my little shadow and I loved it…I loved you…And I can’t be without you now…I love you, Masako and I promise that I will love until my dying day…So marry me?”
“Yes…Yes...Yes I’ll marry you…” She breathed shakily and Sho moved forward kissing her gently without waiting for the officiator. It was a long but loving kiss that wrapped around her and him stealing her breath away and causing her heart to dance. Around them was a rumble of laughter and Masako flushed as they broke apart breathing deeply while they looked at each other too nervous to look around.
“Well since they beat me too it, I’ll skip over that part and say…May I present Sho and Masako Sakurai…”
Masako and Sho turned blushing brightly when their family and friends cheered and clapped confetti showering down around them. From here she could see her father sobbing and laughing in the arms of his lover while Ohno and Toma were grinning from ear to ear.
“We did it…We’re married…We’re really married…” She said looking down at the new ring that was on her finger it was white gold with tiny yellow gold daisies wrapped around the band. She giggled again her heart singing when she looked back at Sho knowing that finally after all these years he was her husband. “I love you...Sakurai Sho…”
“I love you Sakurai Masako…”
