krystalkatzficzThe next afternoon Kazu was once again sat on the hard bench in front of the painting not knowing if Ohno would actually come. It had was a thought that had plagued him since that morning and throughout the day leaving him with a gnawing sensation deep in the pit of his stomach. He looked up at the painting again his eyes searching the delicate lines of her face wondering how a fifteen year old boy had been the one to paint it. It was perfect, soft and delicate with perfect brush strokes giving her skin a realistic tone.
“Aiba-kun…” The harsh voice of the manager called and Kazu turned from the painting while at the same time standing up as Jun stalked towards him. The expression on his face was even harsher than it had been yesterday and Kazu found himself swallowing down a lump of fear looking at the older man.
“Um…Yes…?” He breathed nervously as the man continued to stalk forward before stopping almost directly in front of him his eyes going from his face to the painting and then back again.
“Sato…Ohno-sensei wasn’t able to make it today, he asked me to apologise…And…To give you this…A photo…” Jun said holding out an envelope and Kazu stared at it for a moment his tongue scrapping nervously against his lips as he felt a sting of disappointment inside him.
“Is…Is he okay?” He asked remembering the tremble that he had seen in the artist’s hands yesterday, it had only been faint but it had been there.
“…A fever…He should be fine once he’s had some rest…Here…” Jun pushed the envelope at him and Kazu took it holding it between trembling fingers. Jun hung around watching him closely as he lifted up the flap and pulled out an old photo. It showed a group of students all wearing the same school uniform that he was. His eyes ran over the faces, recognising Ohno immediately as the one in the centre with a sleepy smile and a paint splash on his cheek, before his eyes fell onto the girl at the back. She was grinning along with the rest of them, her hair as long as it was in the painting and her eyes just as bright. She looked even more like him in the photo and Kazu felt his heart jump around against his ribs.
“It’s…her…” He breathed a finger brushing over the face before he swallowed looking up at the manager who had an unreadable expression on his face. “Um…I…”
“Her name was…Is Ninomiya Kazuko…” Jun muttered in a softer tone than Kazu had heard before and he found that his eyes widened at the name that had spilled out of Jun's mouth.
“Kazuko? Really? My name is…Kazunari…” He breathed looking back at the photo his eyes focusing on the woman that was laughing up at him convinced more than ever that this was his mother.
“…Your parents kept it?” Jun asked in some surprise and Kazu nodded slowly giving a sad smile suddenly overwhelmed with the urge to see his adopted mum.
“…Yeah it was on my blanket…I…Um…Thank-you…Will you thank Ohno-sensei for me too…I hope that he gets better soon…” he said about to run off and was surprised when Jun reached out and grabbed his arm holding it preventing him from leaving.
"Bra-...Aiba-kun, wait...if she is your mum...she...she wouldn't have given you up if she didn't have to..." The manager told him his hand quickly relaxing and pulling away from him as if he had been scolded and Kazu swallowed down yet another lump from his throat before asking gently;
"You...know her?"
"Knew her...that's me in the photo..." Jun said pointing to the geeky but still cute looking guy that was standing beside Kazuko. “…If it turns out that she is your mother and you do manage to find her…Don’t be too hard on her…”
“I…Um…I promise…Thank-you…” Kazu smiled nodding his head at him and then managed to make his getaway hoping that the restaurant wasn’t too busy and his mum wouldn’t mind giving him a cuddle.
