Ohno ran through the trees when he heard the pained whine of the Dune Fox before the air went almost deathly silent. Praying to both the divine and the celestial he darted through the trees barely noticing the scratching of branches or the thick thorns that were cutting into his feet. The smell of the Goblins reached his nostrils again as well as the bitter scent of fresh blood pausing his steps he hid himself behind a tree and peered out into the night. The four goblins were circled around Fee who was now laid out on his side. There was a gash in his side and his breathing was laboured but he was still alive and that allowed Ohno to have confidence that he could be saved. He was positive now that there was only the four goblins in the forest, any more and he would have spotted them or at least seen some signs. The goblins grunted at each other again before letting out a series of clicks that ended with a hiss. Their dark knives were poised over Fee and Ohno stepped out from behind his tree only to be out moved by Swift, who was living up to his name, darting out of the dark barking and growling furiously at the goblins knocking them aside so he could stand over his injured brother.
The goblins let out startled cries and Ohno darted forward using the confusion against them. His knives sang in the night as Swift attacked with all of his might jumping out and going for the goblin that came up behind him as he was despatching two in front. It was an almost frenzied battle his mind deeply aware of the Dune Wolf that appeared to be only just clinging on to life. His mind was filled with a red haze and his body moved on its own until eventually the goblins were died almost torn apart by both his knives and Swift’s jaw. Both dune foxes were coated with black blood now but thankfully Swift at least was okay. After wiping his blood soaked daggers onto the ground he studied the injured fox.
>Thank-you my friend…< He whispered softly burying his fingers into the warm fur feeling at the knife wound before tearing at his own tunic and wrapping it around him. Fee turned his head a lapped once at his nose before turning to his brother and giving a weak whimper. >I will take you to Aiba…He will know what to do…< Ohno breathed hoping and praying that the Ru’inwë’s skills could heal his much loved animal.
Carefully the king lifted the Dune fox and carried him away from the foul creatures and through the thick forest with Swift leading the way. It was surprising how far and deep they had come away from the camp and it was even more surprising that when he first saw the white tip of the tents the sun was already raising into the sky. Aiba was tied down with thick cord his second holding the end of the line. He sobbed harshly when he saw Fee and Ohno felt his heart break inside his chest. It was always heard for a Ru’inwë to lose one of their animals and he suspected it was harder still for Aiba who was already connected to them and Fee and Swift were his younglings.
>He is not dead yet…I am sure you can heal him…< He told the struggling man who was immediately released and came to the dune foxes side as Ohno lay him down on a roll mat. >If you cannot he will find a place in the eternal light…<
>…Thank-you…< Aiba whispered his whole body shaking as he set to work removing the makeshift bandage that Ohno had placed over the wound and studying the cut. >Water…I must wash it…A goblin blade is tipped with poison…<
Around the elves came attending to his every wish while Ohno sank down to the floor staring at his blood soaked hands. It was a mix of foul goblin blood and the dune foxes and although he had seen the horrors of war it was still enough to shake him up and leave him feeling breathless.
>My king…You should perhaps clean yourself…<
>Yes…I will, did Nino stir?<
>Not that I am aware…The low king has not made a sound…< As Jun spoke the flap of the tent shifted to one side and Phoenix hobbled out, its feathers sticking up at odd angles as it walked in a haphazard kind of way. The two halves of his beak clinking together as he moved over the ground, stumbling over the smallest of rocks and twigs, until it reached the dune fox. Every watched in amazement as the bird climbed up onto Fee’s back. >Shouldn’t we stop…<
>Ssh…Watch…< Ohno whispered with the faintest tremble of hope and excitement as he remembered that the bird had healed Nino. Of course the wound his beloved had had was nothing to the wound in the Dune Fox’s side but anything was possible. Phoenix stretched out his scrapped wings and arching them up over his head, the plumes around his eyes seemingly glowing and even lighter shade of blue as he gave an almost ear splitting honk. He stayed that way for a while and then without anything even remotely impressive happening he jumped back down and almost buried his back into the earth as he fell forward. Righting himself he bobbed his way back to the tent scratching his feet before vanishing inside again. Ohno’s mouth, and everybody else’s, was parted into a round circle of surprise and confusion as they stared at the fading Dune Fox.
Fee’s breathing quickened for a long time and then just seemed to stop as he gave a shudder. Swift whined nuzzling at his brother while Aiba let out a broken sob his body seeming to fold in on itself as he pressed his face into the thick fur. Ohno felt disappointment in his own heart and he closed his eyes whispering the prayer of the fallen until a murmur brought him out of it and he opened his eyes slowly to realise that Fee was already beginning to get back onto his feet.
>…Fee?< Aiba breathed uncertainly touching the Dune Fox’s face and Fee dragged his tongue slowly over him from chin to forehead. >You’re…Okay…<
>It appears that way…< Ohno whispered in disbelief scrambling to his feet and going into his tent to see Phoenix once again laying over his beloved looking more like a plucked chicken than ever, while a trail of feathers ran from the entrance to the bed. The bird gave him a beetle eyed stare and Ohno found himself bowing his head at the creature whispering seriously >Thank-you, noble one<
Phoenix gave a tired sounding honk and curled itself into Nino’s neck the boy’s hand coming up to stroke at his now almost bald back. Ohno watched the strange sight for a few more minutes before exiting the tent again aware of the murmurs that were circling.
>A phoenix…A real one!< Voices hissed with excitement while Ohno walked to the Ru’inwë and his beasts.
>Is he cured?< He asked as Aiba was searching the Dune Fox who was being frantically groomed by Swift. The Ru’inwë looked up with a huge happy grin on his face his eyes sparkling bright as he answered him;
>Not completely…He will need rest still and have to wear a bandage but…Phoenix…He saved him…He really saved him!<
>I see that…< Ohno smiled leaning down in front of Fee, noting that even his injured leg had been healed now and he was standing proud…Or as proudly as he could with Swift still lapping happily at his face and biting on his ears. >Thank-you my friend…You saved my life and I am glad that you are still with us…<
Fee gave a short bark and Ohno smiled stroking the top his head slowly before getting back to his feet and looking around the camp. He would have liked to say that they could stay here for another day to rest but where there were a fee goblins there would definitely be more and so he had no choice but to say;
>Have a few hours rest and then we can move on…<

A/N: I’m sorry it was such a poor fight scene! But as Ohno said he could easily take on the four goblins…There will be better fight scenes ahead I promise ^_^
