~One month later~
The wind whipped around Nino’s face as he sat on rock overlooking the torn up battlefield. There was blood caked onto his face and hands, thankfully not his own and his hair was mattered with dirt and grime. His hands were shaking almost violently with a blend of adrenaline and nerves. The Airith soldiers had been pushing back against them when they arrived and it had taken almost four weeks of non-stop fighting to push them back across the lines.
“Cousin…” Sakurai whispered coming to his side and Nino managed to give him a smile but didn’t even try to take out his book. “Tomorrow we move deeper into Airith…It has been reported from the soldiers that are defecting that our cousin has surrounded himself with only the best trained soldiers…He is becoming increasingly more paranoid…”
Nino nodded slowly his eyes closing tightly as he tried to push away the strange feeling that was washing over him. He guessed that it was because he had been given the comforts of home that the sight and sounds of battle had reduced him easily to this mess of mixed emotions. He turned his gaze away from the battlefield and towards their camp. After the battle was finally won at 60 of Ryuu’s men had defected joining their army and bolstering it again but there was not many of his men that had trusted the defectors and now they sat off to one side separate from the others. He could understand the feelings of his men but he knew that separation on made it more likely that they would betray them at the crucial moment. He got to his feet and walked over to the circle of defected soldiers surprised at how many there were now, at least a 120, sitting around a makeshift fire their armour hastily painted in the colours of Etherin. They rose to their feet as they saw him but he smiled motioning for them to sit down again taking his notebook from his pocket.
>Please sit, the battle has been long…< He wrote determined that he wasn’t going to make speeches >Can I join you?<
“Wouldn’t you feel more comfortable with your own men, your majesty? I believe that they are mourning the dead…” One of the soldiers asked with a raised eyebrow while moving aside some skins from a rock to allow him to sit down.
>And you are not mourning yours? I am sure that you have also lost friends…Brothers…<
“All enemies of yours…I doubt people would care much for the dead of our side, majesty…”
>Ryuu is my enemy…You cannot be blamed for whose side you’re on…< Nino wrote with a shrug honestly feeling that it was true. The soldiers had no choice who they fought, in another life or another time these men could have been his allies anyway fighting alongside him. The only people that had the say were those in charge. >Please…They are the honoured dead and I would be proud to listen to any stories that you may have…< Nino wrote watching the expressions on the men’s faces for a while before they nodded and a beer, warm and almost flat was pushed into his hand.
“Alright your majesty…”
The night passed slowly with a lot of laughter and a surprising amount of tears and drinking as the men of Airith and Etherin came together talking of the most embarrassing stories they all knew of their departed friends the small group grew larger and larger as both sides realised that they weren’t as different as they wanted to believe.
*~*~*~*~*~*~*
“He’s like a magician!” Masaki breathed as a loud laugh rose up from the circle around the bonfire and Jun gave a nod watching the scene that was before him with a hum. There was something about their silent king that drew people to him and he knew that it was simply because he made them feel as if they were the most important people on the planet. Nino believed that there was good in everybody and very few people wanted to be the ones that proved him wrong. But just because he wanted to give people the benefit of the doubt didn’t mean he trusted them completely.
“He is a great king…” He agreed wrapping his arms around Masaki’s waist glad that they were covered by a thick shadow preventing anybody from seeing them. Masaki’s hands settled on top of his, his coarse fingers scraping over the back of his hands.
“We should join them…” Masaki whispered his voice a little shaky as he tried to pull out of his arms but Jun shook his head taking his earlobe into his mouth and nibbling on it for a while before whispering;
“No…You should come to my tent while everyone is distracted…”
“Un…Jun we…Can’t…” The younger man whimpered and Jun smirked loving the way that Masaki was always eager and quick to respond to his touching and he rocked against arse cheeks his own cock half hard against him. There was nothing like a fierce battle to get the blood pumping and to make you glad to be alive.
“Yes…We can…You’ll just have to keep your voice down…” He growled gripping his lover tightly around the wrist and pulling backwards towards his tent. It was almost as nice as the kings with an almost real sized bed and most of the home comforts a person could need but it wouldn’t be wise to forget that they were only protected from the outside world by a thin layer of canvas. Stripping each other was slow and messy with their armour being tugged off and dropped to the floor as they kissed and touched each other. When they were finally naked there wasn’t much time for them to stand on ceremony and Jun dipped his fingers in the oil on the side smearing it over his lover’s entrance. “When we get home I’m going to worship your body everyday…” He told his lover his fingers working him open a little and Masaki nodded biting on his lip to stop his moans.
Their coupling was frantic, both aware that just outside there were over a 1000 men and the risk of another battle starting unexpectedly and the last thing that they wanted was to be caught with their trousers down. Jun pounded into his lover enjoying the feel of the wall of muscles around him and then he grunted pouring his seed deep inside the tight channel as Masaki came with a spurt of ejaculate against his hip and a spasming of muscles around his cock. They stayed locked together for a few minutes tasting and touching one another until they reluctantly drew apart knowing that they couldn’t fall to sleep together it wasn’t worth the risk.

“Ah, my lord Ohno…Sorry…That isn’t your title…” Quintin said as he and Toma reluctantly joined him in the throne room. The Holy Father was sitting in the golden and jewel encrusted throne smirking down at them as if he had a right to be there and they were the intruders. Ohno clenched his fists tightly together forcing himself to stay calm while Ceolwulf’s words circled around and around in his mind.
“No…It is crown prince Ohno…” Toma told him stiffly clearly enjoying the shock that formed on the Holy Father’s face. It lasted for only a second or two but Ohno had to admit that seeing him look completely off centre with a gapping mouth and wide eyes was worth the discomfort that he was feeling. Toma had pointed out that even though they were at war there was still a kingdom to be run and as crown prince and heir that was his duty.
“Crown prince? I see…Then forgive me your highness…I was just about to service the people…With the king away people have been…”
“I believe that that is my job?” Ohno asked as calmly as possible surprised at how level and posh his voice sounded. Living in the palace with knights had certainly improved his speech or at least it had when he was thinking about it. Quintin’s eyes narrowed sharply any trace of the fake smile leaving his lips now but he still tried again to convince him.
“…Your highness of course that is your right…But as the Holy Father I have done this kind of thing many times before…I’m sure that you would much rather be in the garden…With your little children…You do rather appear to be fond of them don’t you?” He said with so much suggestion in his voice that Ohno found himself almost stepping forward and dragging the man down from the throne. It would be easy, so easy to beat him to death with his bare hands but the man had the holy knights beside him staring at him with almost scary expressions on their faces. Toma maybe a skilled knight but not even he would be able to take on all four and Ohno wasn’t sure yet which way the palace guard would go.
“I feel sorry for them…They have already been through so much…I wouldn’t want anybody to take advantage of them…” He said calmly “As for your very kind offer, I appreciate the help but…It is known that our king has a kinder heart than most…His punishments are not the same as those inflicted by the church…”
“You believe the church to be wrong? That the gods’ laws are too brutal? Ah but you have been on the receiving end of one of the harsher punishments…” Quintin said softly and Ohno stiffened his blood freezing like ice crystals in his veins as his mind went to his back and the scars that were their etched for all to see “I wondered that you did not remove your shirt while you were working…The heat must have been intense…Then I realised that you must carry the scars…What was your crime I wonder? What was it that your kind hearted king has forgiven? Does the guard know what you have hidden…Should I tell them or will you?”
*~*~*~*~*~*
Quintin enjoyed the look of pain that crossed over the ‘prince’s’ face. He hadn’t meant to play his hand so soon but the former farmer had stumped him a little showing a great deal of self-control. He knew that he knew about the boy, it was there in his eyes a look of loathing and disgust, so why had he not dealt with him? He was known to be a passionate man and it was obvious that he cared about the children that followed him around like a mother hen so why had he not attacked? That had frustrated the Holy Father enough into pushing and goading him further wanting to find his breaking point. Even though it was making him lose the pressure point that he had, not that it was much of one now thanks to Ryuu. The whole country of Etherin seemed to know of the king and his farmer but they were choosing to ignore it.
“Have you decided? Why do you carry the scars upon your back?”
“…I love those of the same sex…” Ohno said in the same calm and steady voice that he had been using the entire time but Quintin could see that his knuckles were white with the pressure of keeping them clenched. There were murmurs of disgust but they were only coming from his own men the ones around the wall, the Etherins, were staying silent their eyes fixed on their prince.
“I see so you are a sodomite? And the king why does he forgive such things? Have you lured him as well?”
“No…We simply fell in love…” Ohno said his eyes going around the room and Quintin followed them seeing the stable boy standing by the door a green sheen over his face. “The king was raped by his cousin when he was young…His knight Yori brought him away from the castle and to the village where I lived…We met in the forest when he had twisted his ankle…As he couldn’t speak he tried to write in the mud…I couldn’t read…After that we became friends with the prince visiting the farm that I lived in with my grandma…He taught me to read and I taught him to work the land…And slowly we fell in love…Just the same as anybody else…Do you want to know a secret about the king? He is still terrified of his cousin…Every time he see him his knees go weak…But he is fighting a war against him now…”
Quintin frowned for a fraction of a second before realising that he had lost this time. He was here in an enemy palace surrounded by an army of stupidly loyal soldiers and the speech at the end had not been for their benefit but for the boy.
