“You are a fucking idiot and you can sleep on the sofa…” Matsumoto-Ninomiya Kazunari spat glaring at his husband before he turned on his heel and marched into the bedroom and threw himself down on the bed kicking and screaming as he attacked a cushion trying to work out why he was so angry. He had been feeling okay when he first woke up and for most of the day but then little things had started to bug him grating on his nerves until he was suddenly so frustrated that he was about ready to scream and shout at anything. He knew the reason for his overly dramatic changes in mood but he didn’t know how to tell Jun, but he knew that it was going to have to be today.
Matsumoto Jun blinked in surprise, the coffee from the pot pouring out over the rim of the cup, his cheeks flushing as he looked at the other two men that were in the room with him. He had noticed Nino getting slowly more and more agitated throughout the day acting like a caged wolf until he had explode in a fit of rage over the smallest thing. He had tried to steam it off by inviting their friends around but he knew now that that had been a mistake. His husband was having a lot of anger issues lately and nothing he could say or do was going to stop it when it started. In his heart he was positive that Nino was having an affair and didn’t know how to tell him and he wanted to stay ignorant of that fact for as long as he possibly could knowing that if Nino let him his life would be over.
“Sorry about that…” He whispered slamming the coffee pot down in a hurry horrified to see a large black stain spreading out over his new pine coffee table.
“Um…Should we go?” Aiba Masaki asked in a whisper and, although Jun wanted to say no, he nodded smiling apologetically.
“Yes, I think that that would be best…I’m sorry…” He said again trying to wipe up the spillage as much as he could with napkins before going to the kitchen and grabbing a cloth. Aiba and Sakurai left quickly and silently leaving him in the apartment alone. He cleaned the table and then washed the pots staring at the closed door of his bedroom his heart breaking a little each time he did so. As the day wore on all he could think that Nino was cheating on him and was trying to get him to be the one that ended it all. He couldn’t do that, he had loved Nino since the first day he had met him when they were both out celebrating their 16th birthdays and he refused to give him up now even if it was like they were living in hell.
He stayed out of the bedroom for the rest of the day making jobs to do before he plucked up the courage and strode into the bedroom. Nino was laid on Jun’s side of the bed his head pressed against his pillow crying bitterly and Jun felt a knot in his stomach and chest and he reached out and let his hand grazed his shoulder causing him to wince when Nino gasped giving a hiss and sitting up wiping his eyes frantically with the balls of his hands hissing;
“…I thought I said…”
“I know what you said but this is my house just as much as yours…” Jun snapped back moving his hand away from him “And I’m going to sleep on my bed…”
“Fine…Then I’ll sleep on the sofa…” Nino spat wriggling around and climbing out of the bed his cheeks flushed and his eyes an angry tear stained red.
“Do that…” Jun growled stripping down until he was in his boxers and climbed into the bed ignoring the open mouthed look Nino was giving him. “Well aren’t you going?”
“I…” Nino started as Jun propped himself up on his tear soaked pillow staring at his husband and asking;
“Are you going? Or are you going to stay around and treat me like shit some more?”
“No…I…I…I can’t go on like this…” Nino told him in a tearful voice and Jun felt his heart drop down to the pit of his stomach knowing that this was it, this was when Nino told him and he could no longer bury his head in the sand.
“Oh…You can’t?” Jun said as sarcastically as he could manage still trying to ignore the truth looking at his lover as Nino flinched shaking his head slowly. Nino was different than when they had met, he still looked the same in his face but he had put a lot of weight on recently, he carried it well but he had noticed that he was wearing less of his tight jeans and was wearing more jogging bottoms and baggier t-shirts and jumpers. He would have thought that that would have meant that he was less likely to move on and find somebody else but it just showed him how little he knew of his lover. Nino swallowed and then licked his lips tugging around at the t-shirt flashing off the belly that had deep red stretch marks running up it from the waistband of the trousers and around his belly button. Just that told him how long it had been since he had seen his lover naked. They had been together but living completely different lives for so long that even that flash of skin was enough for his heart to jump with lust. Something that disappeared when Nino whispered;
“I’m pregnant…”
“…What?” Jun asked his mouth falling open and his eyes bulging open and Nino lifted up his top flashing off his stomach and ranting;
“Pregnant, up the duff, a bun in the oven, having a baby…”
“What…But…That’s impossible…” Jun said staring at the stomach his eyes moving over the marks and the tight skin half convinced that Nino wasn’t just talking crazy that there really was a baby inside him.
“…I…There…There is something that I haven’t told you…” Nino whispered and Jun waited with baited breath for Nino to tell him that he had been born a woman and had very impressive surgery at some point “…You see…Um…The thing is…I…I’m not from earth…Well this earth…I…I’m a mirror person…”
“A mirror what…?”
“A mirror person…Um…You know how you look at a mirror…You see a reflection right…Every thing’s exactly the same…It’s reflective glass and…Um…Well…That’s a load a bollocks…” Nino stammered looking like he was about to faint and his heart was in his mouth “Well…Sort of…I…There’s another life…Exactly the same…We…They don’t even know…This world exists either…”
“O-kay…Kazu…I love you but…Obviously you want to break up…Or you need help…” Jun whispered hoping that it was the second one while being terrified to not knowing how he was meant to be able to help him if he was taking a break from reality.
“No…No I don’t want to break up I love you as much as I always have…” Nino whispered crying again as he held his stomach saying the words that Jun had wanted to hear so much “…And I don’t need help…I and the other me...We only had each other…And well when I was really little something happened and I…He…We switched. I ended up here and he ended up there…”
“Kazu…” Jun said surprised when Nino dived at him grabbing a hold of his hand and pressing it to his stomach. For a while nothing happened and Jun wanted to look at his lover with pity and then he felt it the smallest little kick against the palm of his hand a strange fluttering feeling that caused his heart to leap with both joy and shock as he realised that there was something inside of his lover. “…How…? How is this possible…?”
“It’s your baby, Jun…Please…If you’ve loved me at all believe me now…Please…” Nino asked flashing him too wide eyes his bottom lip trembling again and Jun felt something inside of him click as he realised that this was happening that he was having a baby with the man that he loved.
“How…?” He asked again his hand spreading over the swollen stomach nodding just a little to show Nino that he believed him and for the first time in months he was allowed to see Nino’s smile and his heart ached happily glad that his lover wasn’t leaving him.
“I…I don’t know one minute I was there the next I was here…”
“And men can get pregnant…?”
“Sometimes…”
“But wouldn’t we have noticed a whole other world beyond the mirror?” Jun asked turning to the mirror now and almost fainting when he saw his own reflection and Nino’s not on the bed as they were but sitting side by side looking directly at them. It was the most surreal thing that he had ever seen as he quickly looked away knowing that he was going to have to remove the mirror now.
“…People only see what they want to see…Sometimes the mirrors don’t match up…There’s a flicker like something in the corner of the frame that you can’t see when you focus properly…” Nino whispered and Jun had to admit that there had been times when he had thought he had seen someone or something in the mirror behind him but when he had tried to look it wasn’t there “I…Have no idea how we switched we’ve never even been able to talk again since then…Not until recently…but sometimes I see the world beyond…Like you saw it now…”
“…I…This…Is so confusing…And…Almost terrifying…” Jun said looking at the mirror again and almost shitting himself when he saw the other him pressed up against the glass now looking just as angry and confused as he was. Nino nodded his small hand coming up to caress his cheek his forehead pressing against his.
“…I know…And I’m sorry…I can’t stay here…”
“What? Why…?”
“…I’m pregnant…Can you imagine how that would look? I have to go…Back through…We…Me and…The other me…” Nino whispered looking at the glass and lifting a hand at the other him that was staring at them with an understanding smile on his face “We were going to switch without saying anything…It would be almost the same…But…I and he couldn’t do that…I love you too much and even if it’s a mirror world you…Wouldn’t be this you…Over there…”
“And this is why you’ve been…” Jun said with understanding guessing that he had been right about Nino wanting to break up with him.
“I thought that it would be easier for me to go if I hated you…” He sighed “But…I couldn’t do that…I love you…This you…Just as much as he loves that you…”
“…Then why don’t we…All switch? He comes here…I go there with you?”
“I…I don’t…” Nino choked looking at the mirror again and Jun followed suit guessing that the pair in there were having the same argument.
“I don’t want to lose you…Or our baby…Please…Let me come with you…” Jun pleaded wondering how the mirror would be affected if they had a baby and those in the mirror didn’t. Would it be just one of those things that didn’t match? A baby would be a pretty hard thing to miss.
“Sometimes a mirror is just reflective glass…” Nino whispered obviously reading the question that was in his face.
“I don’t understand any of this…But…I understand that I love you…And even if he’s the reflection of you…He’s not you…” Jun said his head hurting from just thinking about it.
“…I’m not even sure if I’m going to be able to get through…” Nino said chewing on his lip and Jun shrugged saying with determination;
“Then…Let’s try it together…”
“I…I…” Nino stammered a few times his eyes going to the full length mirror again and the pair in the glass nodded with smiles their hands linked together looking just as determined as him.
“See…They want to try too…” Jun said his fingers brushing over the swollen stomach as he watched Nino making up his mind nodding slowly.
“Okay…Let’s…Do this…” He said getting to his feet and Jun did the same noticing for the first time that the Jun in the mirror was fully clothed while he was wearing he was just wearing his boxers. They stood opposite their reflections their hands linked together feeling sick and dizzy but determined and then they slowly worked forward. Jun was positive that he was going to hit hard cold glass but he didn’t instead it was like hitting warm water and they had to push their way through it but soon they were walking into the perfect replica of their own bedroom but with everything in reverse. He looked at Nino who was looking up at him his eyes as wide as dinner plates and together they turned back to the mirror shocked to see that the glass had shattered into a 1000’s pieces.
“We…Did it…” Nino told him shakily his hand almost reaching out to the shattered glass but it stopped himself quickly. “We made it…”
“…We did…” Jun agreed numbly wondering if it was okay for him to faint now. What he had done was unbelievable.
“You…You’re incredible!” Nino shouted suddenly and Jun was surprised to find his arms full of Nino and lips were raining kisses down on to his face. Everything else became unimportant to him, oh he would have to think about it later there was definitely going to be questions later, but at that moment he was safe in the arms of the man he loved that was carrying his child. Mirror worlds or no mirror worlds was going to change the fact that thus was possibly the best thing that could ever have happened to him.
