“What the fuck?!” Nino’s eyes blazed anger rushing through him as he reached out and touched Aiba’s cheek gently tracing the outline of the bruise his teeth grinding together “I’m going to fucking kill him”

“Don’t…” Aiba whispered grabbing his hand “Sho-chan’s already mad…”

“I bet he is…Fuck, why do you always put up with that guy?” Nino spat harshly knowing that no matter how much of a jerk Keita was his friend would shrug it off and pretend that it didn't bother him. He hoped that this bruise would make him stop doing that.

“Because he’s my cousin and my mum likes him” Aiba answered still sounding tearful and Nino clicked his tongue wondering how the hell anyone would be able to stand up for the horrible little shit after seeing that bruise more so Aiba's own mother. It was a shiner worse than the one he had given Hiro even and that had been impressive he thought proudly.

"Did she see this?" He asked motioning to the bruise and Aiba gave a nod touching his cheek again and biting his lip. He looked pathetic, with large wide eyes that were glistening with tears as his bottom lip stuck out, and on any on else it would have looked disturbing and very unmanly but, somehow, with Aiba it looked cute almost like somebody had kicked his puppy and that made Nino want to protect him. It had been that why since they were kids.

"Yeah...and she was mad but...I don't know she just seemed to brush it off..." Aiba shrugged wiping his eyes roughly with the ball of his hands as the bus rolled up beside them with a loud whoosh of air and the creaking of the folded door opening to reveal the smiling face of an elderly bus driver.

 Nino continued to glare even as he stepped onto the bus and flashed his student ID that gave them free bus travel. It wasn't their regular bus as they were so late it meant they were able to find seats near the back away from the other passengers and reluctantly Nino took a deep breath and forced himself to change the subject, knowing that Aiba wouldn't want to speak about it anymore and so he nudged his arm saying;

“So you finally managed to do it?” His friend seemed pretty excited and nodded so fast that he looked like a nodding dog.

"Yup! It was perfect! Better than I could have thought!" He hissed happily a deep red blush in his cheeks, something that seemed to give him more details about his encounter with Sakurai then he needed to. Nino didn't complain though and just settled down into him as Aiba talked about his perfect night so much that even Nino’s ears were red by the time they reached the school.

It appeared that they were blessed by some kind if fate as when they reached the school building the second bell hadn't even gone yet,
"Come on!" Nino shouted grabbing his bag and taking off as soon as he had changed out of shoes into his slippers using every bit of baseball training skill he had to hurry towards class. As he was running he caught sight of Kame going in the opposite direction and the younger guy gave him a small nervous thankful smile that he hadn’t told anyone.

Classes were dull, with the exception of having to explain why Aiba had a bruise and was looking out of it, and he was glad when the bell went for lunch. It was raining, so hard that even their manic coach had to admit that it would be useless for them the practice, so he headed alone to his and Aiba’s secondary lunch place and was surprised to be stopped by Ohno. The artist was sitting on a low wall staring out blankly at the view in front of him seemingly not caring about the rain that was falling so hard it was like Jun’s power shower.

“You’re the guy from yesterday, I was waiting for you…Can we talk?” The artist asked in a soft almost sleepy voice blinking slowly a few times and Nino had to wonder at him being a genius at all. Knowing what it was going to be about he sighed but nodded in agreement quickly texting Aiba to tell him that he would be late. “Thank-you…This way?” Ohno asked hesitantly his head jerking in the direction of the art room he had caught them in earlier. Again Nino agreed thinking that anywhere they weren’t being pounded by the rain was okay by him. They almost ran to the room and as soon as the door closed he muttered;

“Look if this is about yesterday, I already told your boyfriend I wasn’t going to tell anyone…”

“Thank-you for that, Kazuya… He’s pretty shy” Ohno whispered with a smile that had almost the same effect on him as Jun’s did, almost, and he cleared his throat blinking as he tried to pull his eyes away from the lips that were presented in front of him as he scoffed;

“Kame?! Shy? Please he wouldn’t know the meaning of the word…”

“He’s shyer than you think he puts up an act but…He has a lot going on…” Ohno mumbled in defence of his lover and Nino rolled his eyes wondering when that was ever a good reason for attempting to make somebody’s life hell.
“Ohno-san, I don’t care who he sleeps with or who you sleep with…” He said as calmly as he could even though his fists were clenched tightly at his sides “but he’s not the only one that’s going through a lot and if he can’t accept that he gay that’s no fucking reason for him to call me and Masa down for it…”

“He knows that…And he’s sorry for what he said…”

“Look, I’ve already said I wouldn’t tell anyone…Everyone has their reasons for not wanting to come out and I won’t force that on anyone…”

Nino mumbled knowing that that was true. He still hadn’t come out to his sister and Grandmother and he wasn’t sure if he could, his grandmother had high hopes of him carrying on the family name after all, and he’d only been brave enough to come out to the team because Aiba had been right there with him. Aiba was braver than he was. His friend had come out to his family when he was ten and…It seemed like they had accepted it but now it felt like they had just thought, or hoped that it was a phase and now they were having to deal with the fact that it wasn’t. Ohno smiled again and once again Nino suddenly thought he was he was really cute and sweet and before he could stop his mouth from working he asked “What do you see in him?”

“He has beautiful skin” The artist mumbled and Nino’s mouth dropped open his eyes almost falling out of his head at the strange glow that was in Ohno’s eyes as he said that.

“Okay… Um I’m going to go” Nino said with a cough edging towards the door. He might be a genius but it was a weirdo. Ohno nodded waving his hand vaguely before he turned back to plain canvas picking up his paint brush.

Free of the art room Nino shook his head, dislodging the smell of paint, while trying not to think about it too much, wasn’t there some saying that stated that true geniuses were all borderline mad? If there Ohno certainly fit that description, he thought as he reached his friend.

“What kept you?” Aiba asked handing him a shop brought bento as they settled down behind the bleachers of the gym letting the heating wash over them drying out their uniforms and hair and filling them with a pleasant comfy glow.

“I saw Kame making out with that artist guy yesterday…And just now he asked me not to tell anyone” Nino answered in between mouthful’s of rice balls while Aiba almost choked on a prawn his eyes bulging out of his head as he gulped down his food saying;

“Wow! Seriously? That’s unexpected ne?”

“Yeah just a little” Nino agreed eating his lunch and staring at the grate in the wall. Jun had told him that he would be busy doing a dry read or something of the script for the special and then he was doing some kind of Idol variety show and he wasn’t sure how busy he was going to be so getting a message might had been difficult but Nino thought that there wasn’t any arm in him sending him a message. Even if he didn’t get a reply until much later at least Jun knew that he was being thought of right? He thought nervously chewing on the inside of his cheek as he quickly typed the message and pressed send before he could change his mind.

*~*~*~*~*

Since he had told Nino that he was going to be busy he hadn’t expected to feel the buzz of his phone in his breast pocket but he was glad that he did. With a smile he pulled it out and quickly read the three little words and the emotion.

>I love you <3<

It was something that was completely unlike Nino that he couldn’t help but let his smile get wider aware that there was a few sighs from the other guests. He quickly sent his reply and then let out a long drawn out sigh as he looked around the green room. Two female idols, dressed in pink overly frilly skirts were giggling in the corner looking just like the teenagers they were and every now and then Jun could tell that they were looking at him and whispering before letting out another round of giggles. It wasn’t anything new but as it was he wasn’t in the best mood to handle it.

In fact he was almost tempted to roll his eyes when he heard snippets of their conversation, apparently there was a meteor shower next week that was said to let you and whoever you saw it was stay in love forever and they were thinking of ways of making him watch with them. Fat chance of that happening, there was only one person he’d want to watch something like that with, he smiled wondering how the student had firmly settled in his heart so quickly.

It was strange he had never let anyone in before, and after watching him sleep so unguarded that morning he had fallen even deeper in love with him. It was a strange feeling, torn between happiness and fear that it was going to be taken away from him. Somehow he didn’t think he would be able to recover if Nino decided to leave him. They messaged until an AD came and told him that they were ready to start recording again

>Bye baby, I’ll see you tomorrow?< He sent and then waited more nervously than even he would believe until the answer came;

>Yes, of course, take care, bye <3<

Jun chuckled to himself, without realising that he was causing more hearts to flutter, and then went to play the silly games of the show.

*~*~*~*~*~*

“Kazu-chan…Welcome home” His grandmother said with a smile as he came into the living room and Nino grinned as kissed her worn cheek before going to change out of his uniform. Pulling on a sky blue t-shirt and a pair of jeans and thinking that the t-shirt would have been normal if it didn’t have a fluffy white rabbit on the front. He looked in the mirror wondering to every god and goddess what someone like Jun saw in him, he smiled though and went out to his grandmother, who was bent over one of her little gardens.

“That looks wonderful” He said sitting at the table and watching as she worked creating a tiny cobbled path way, through lush trimmed grass, that led up to a knotted and twisted bonsai tree that had been perfectly manipulated. The gardens would have sold for quite a bit of money but the old woman refused, insisting on giving them away as charity prizes or gifts.

“I’m using the stones that Kazu-chan brought for me, see? This one can be for Kazu-chan…” She smiled motioning to the stone that were positioned against the tiny tree. All of the details were perfectly worked out carried on barely looking up as she asked thoughtfully “what happened to those games things you used to play on?”

Nino swallowed down the lump from his throat trying to smile at her not wanting her to worry. The games and consoles had all been sold a while ago to pay for his baseball uniform, but he decided not to tell her that, he would give up baseball before he put any more strain on her finances.

“They’re at Masa’s” He told her causally and this time she frowned looking up at him with the chopsticks that she was using as tweezers resting in her hand. It was obvious that she didn’t believe him but she didn’t say so.

He knew that she felt bad that he hadn’t had the stuff other kids had had, even before his grandpa had died their lives hadn’t been easy, but the stuff that she had given him had been worth so much more. On impulse he got up from the table and hugged her tightly from behind overcome with his emotions.

“What was that for?” She asked with a surprised laugh a happy flush staining her cheeks as he held her more tightly breathing in the scent of her cardigan. Unable to answer Nino just shrugged. Things hadn’t been easy but he had always been surrounded with an aura of love, his grandparents and Kari had always made him feel loved and accepted no matter what. Which was more than could be said for Aiba’s family, Aiba’s mum was a nice enough woman but most of the time she treated Aiba like he was the nephew while Keita was the son. And then there was Jun, when he had told him about his mother and step-father Nino hadn’t been able to believe it. How could anybody treat their own flesh and blood like that?  “What’s wrong, Kazu-chan?” His grandmother asked softly reaching out and pinching his nose tightly with the chopsticks until he released her rubbing his nose as he sat back down.

“I was just thinking how lucky I am to have you”

“Are you feeling okay sweetie?” She asked putting a hand on his forehead; Nino laughed deciding to blame Jun, ever since he had gotten with the older man he had been in a happy little bubble that nobody could break him out of.

“I’m fine” He said chewing on the corner of his mouth “Masa was just having some problems with his parents and I’m just glad that I’ve got you…”

“I see” She said softly her nose wrinkling thoughtfully as she looked down at the tree appearing to be dissatisfied with one of the leaves. “I’m sure everything will turn out okay…Parents and children bicker all the time…But at the end of the day family is the most important thing…”
she told him snipping off of the unsatisfying leaf. Nino sighed again hoping she was right as he reached out and switched on the television. The news programme flickered into life and together they watched as the presenters talked about a meteor shower that happened once every 50 years,

“I saw them with your grandpa, 50 years ago” His grandmother told him, suddenly with a happy smile “A year before we got married, he always told me that if you saw them with the person you loved you were blessed to be together forever”

“That sounds nice” Nino smiled, wishing he could see them with his lover before wincing and giving an inward groan as he realised, to his horror, he was acting overly corny.

“I heard from Kari-chan, she’ll be coming home for the anniversary” she told him softly and Nino froze his mind going blank as he realised that it wasn’t long until the anniversary of his parent’s death. He had forgotten once again as his eyes went to the shrine in the corner. Two faces peered out at him and for a moment Nino was filled with despair and he was thankful that his phone rang.

“Hello? Masa…” He said quickly glad of the distraction hoping that his friend was calling to tell him something random and funny so he was surprised and horrified to hear a tearful Aiba sobbing down the line;

“Nino-chan…”

“Masa, what’s wrong?” Nino asked gripping his phone more tightly as he got to his feet about to run to his friend’s house before Aiba whispered;

“Can I come round?”

“Of course you can, you know you don’t need to ask”

“Thank-you…” Aiba thanked him and hung up leaving Nino to pace around helplessly for ten minutes until there was finally a knock. He ran the short distance to the door and pulled it open horrified when he saw Aiba’s tear stained face. Aiba lunged forward and hugged him tightly the strength of his arms almost crushing him and he buried his face against his neck which, given the difference between their heights, was impressive.

“Masa, what happened?” Nino asked through a mouthful of hair and Aiba trembled before wailing almost like a banshee.

“It was awful, Keita wasn’t meant to be there tonight, but he stopped by to help Yusuke with his homework…” He babbled and Nino sighed leading him into the main living room where his grandmother was already making them a drink and he sat him down saying;

“Okay, take a deep breath and tell me everything”

“Well Sakurai came round to meet Mum and dad properly like I said…  They were okay with him for a while and then Keita came down. He started being snarky to Sho-chan, Sho put up with for a bit but Keita started on me and then Sho-chan got mad, he said some things and mum and dad told him to leave and then they said I wasn’t allowed to see him again…” Nino suddenly found himself with an armful of friend again and he held him rocking him gently from side to side as Aiba cried onto his shoulder “I ran away after that and phoned you”

“I seriously hate Keita” Nino snapped angrily as his grandma placed two cups down onto the table giving Aiba a pitying smile. “Why can’t he just get a life?”

“I don’t want to stop seeing Sho-chan, I love him” Aiba whispered wet tears soaking into Nino’s bunny t-shirt.

 Nino patted his back as his blood boiled it was true that he had doubts about the older guy but he never would have thought that Aiba’s family would be this bad. He had no idea what to say to his friend and just held him until he had cried it out and then gave him the nearly cold tea.

After they had drained the cups he led Aiba into his bedroom and they lay on the bed cuddling tightly like they had when they were younger. He knew that he would act the same if he was told he couldn’t see Jun again.

 It was hours before Aiba fell into an exhausted sleep, as he listened to Aiba snoring he thought about what his grandmother had said his sister was coming back, with everything that was going on with Jun he really had almost forgotten what time of year it was. In two days it would be the anniversary of his parent’s death he couldn’t believe he had forgotten it, just like he had almost forgotten his parents.

When he had been younger Kari had told him stories about their parents and that was how they felt to him, characters in a story, he wondered how they would react to Jun. He hoped they would have liked him. But he was terrified that they would have acted the same way as Aiba’s parents. He holding his friend tightly he closed his eyes and fell into a restless sleep filled with images of his parents screaming at him.
