Matsumoto Junko sighed softly staring at her parent’s home. Nothing had changed since the last time she had been here but then again it never had even when she had lived here. It was the same as when she had ran away into the night. It was still a postcard perfect place with white painted wood and window boxes. In the garden flowers bloomed and vegetables were in full force aided by the butterflies that were flying here there and everywhere. The grey and black roof tiles actually gleamed in the light and as always, like when she had had been 16…Only four years ago, but it felt longer, she felt like they were too terrified of her mother to do anything else.

“Mama…Is that a witches house?” Her four year old daughter, Shoko asked softly swinging her hand around and Junko laughed lightly shaking her head, seeing why the girl could think that seeing how it looked a little like a the gingerbread house from the story that where reading together, settling her son Masaki up a little higher on her hip. The action wasn’t needed but Masaki was a happy enough baby and he giggled happily nuzzling into her hair before pulling it almost painfully from the roots.

“Ah careful Masaki…No…This is my parent’s house…Your grandparents…” She answered her heart fluttering when the door opened and her mother stepped out. The woman had the fountain of youth stashed somewhere, she had to she didn’t look a day older, her face was perfectly smooth without a trace of a wrinkle or a grey hair and her hair was up and as neat as ever and the apron that was around her waist sat perfectly over slim hips. Even now it was easy to see why she had been the most sought after woman in the small fishing village but Junko knew that under the cute exterior there lived a real life dragon that had had waspish tongue and a very quick wit. During her youth Junko had always wondered why her father, a simple soft spoken man, would love her as much as he did but she knew the answer it was love. Real love not like the lust that she had confused with it.

In her mind she could remember when she had last stood her with her mother screaming at her, telling her that her lover was no good a waste of space. It was painful for Junko to be back here having to admit that she was wrong and the woman in front of her had been wrong but she needed to do this, she had needed to do it even before Masaki had been born but she had been too afraid and too proud to admit that she had been wrong. Not until she had felt the hand find her cheek slapping her hard and causing her to smack into a cabinet.

“Mama?” Shoko whispered sounding pained and Junko blinked coming back to herself and the present moment making her realise that she was squeezing the girls hand harder than she would have liked.

Ohno Kazuko yawned lightly stretching out her back as she put her face to the wind trying to see if it was going to rain or not. There was cabbages to bring in but she’d be damned if she was going to do it in the rain. There didn’t appear to be a cloud in the sky but she knew better than to trust that. She turned her first to the right and, if she was perfectly honest, her heart nearly stopped as she saw her daughter standing there with one child by her feet and another in her arms. Kazuko barely spared the children a glance at first her eyes eagerly searching her daughter’s face positive that she was about to start crying as a painful prickle started at the back of her eyes but pushed it away breathing deep through her nose.

The girl had changed much since she had last seen her and the teenager that she knew was gone, leaving a fragile pale looking woman, beautiful but fragile looking with soft bleached coloured hair that curled down to her shoulders. The clothes she wore barely fitted, either hanging loose or too tight. But she was holding herself as proud as ever, her face up and straight. The children appeared to be in better condition both dressed smartly, the little girl in a periwinkle blue pinafore dress with her hair up into two pigtails while the boy in her arms was dressed in an actual sailor suit.

It had been for years since she had seen her little girl, four years since she had gone up to her room and found a note saying ‘I’m okay…And goodbye…’ She was angry, very angry, but more than anything she was relieved, so relieved that she was almost certain that her heart was going to burst right out of his chest. Her first instinct was to run over to her and throw herself into her arms but she didn’t, she couldn’t her legs were frozen to the floor and no matter how relieved she was to see her daughter and what must be her grandchildren she was still Ohno Kazuko. So she waited watching her daughter as Junko watched her knowing that they were both waiting for the other to make the first move. Kazuko’s mouth twitched just slightly at the corners almost forming a smile, a touch of pride in her stomach, her daughter was a lot like she was although Junko would rather die than admit it.

After a long time Junko seemed to come to her senses and she slowly walked over to her leaving her baggage out on the path. Kazuko cleared her face becoming expressionless as she arrived and she was impressed with her acting ability when she spoke and her voice stayed calm.

“Junko…”

“Mother…” Junko said stiffly holding the boy close while the girl dipped behind her legs peeking at her with wide eyes. “I…”

“You’ve returned?” Kazuko asked almost needlessly but needing to say something. Junko nodded slowly her eyes shining brightly her bottom lip trembling a little and Kazuko knew that it wouldn’t be long before she broke down to.

“Yes…I’m…I need…I’m sorry…I’m so sorry…” Junko whispered the tears falling quickly the tremble in her voice the undoing of her mother who let out a loud sob of her own.

“Come here, you daft girl” Kazuko growled standing on her tip toes and throwing her arms around her neck as they both started to cry sobbing brokenly while confusing the hell out of the two children.

Very touching story. You can get the whole picture without going into detail. In part because this type story is constantly being delt with in real life. You can also tell that with their reaction that things will only get better now. So sweet. Great job writing! Lol, even if it was under pain killer medication.....hope you feel better now. : )

A reunion between a daughter and a mother,
It's heartbreaking that Junko run a way from home for 4 years and finally comes back with 2 children
I guess Kazuko and Ohno didn't know about her marriage, or whatever that Junko did?
