Title from Justin Hayward, War of the Worlds Forever Autumn.
Nino sat down in front of the Ohno family monument his eyes on the golden writing that was written on the black stone. They were gently written with soft cursive kanji but it didn’t stop them feeling cold and harsh the date that indicated a life cruelly cut short. The monument was carefully maintained by Ohno’s parents and there was never anything much for him to do expect for take away a few errant leaves from the sides of the monument and place his flowers down into the little jar. He did that first carefully putting his deep purple flowers next to the softer pink ones that Ohno’s family must have put there recently.
“It’s autumn again Oh-chan…The leaves have started falling…Do you remember jumping in the leaves? I haven’t done that since…Anyway…” Nino fumbled to a stop gulping down the lump that had lodged itself rather evilly inside his throat his eyes burning with the tears that he couldn’t bring himself to cry as they once again moved over the words. “Ohno Satoshi’ that was it, that was all a life came to but Nino could still hear the words of Ohno’s father at the funeral “Son, brother, lover and friend…Even a short life can reach many…” It still surprised him that he had been recognised at the funeral but Ohno’s family had accepted him instantly as his lover but with a son that was always going to leave first it would have been pointless for them to try and deny him the joy of a boyfriend. He reached out and picked up the golden and red leaves that had landed on the base of the monument a smile twitching the corner of his mouth as he thought of the last autumn that he had shared with Ohno.
*~*~*~*~*~*
“What are you doing?” Nino gasped with a laugh as Ohno kicked the mound of crisp brown leaves causing them to scatter with a satisfying crunch and the older teen just giggled jumping up and down in what was left of the pile getting Nino to do the same by grabbing him tightly by the hand and tugging him. It was something that they hadn’t done in years, since middle school in fact and from the expressions on their faces the people around them thought that they were too old to be kicking through leaf piles “I’m too old for this!” he gasped attempting to stop but Ohno held him tight, his almost too thin fingers wrapping tightly and easily around his waist as he shook his head grinning like a mad man. His face was still pale and his eyes so deeply shadowed that he looked vaguely like a panda and the woolly hat was hiding a bald head, but it was such a big difference to how he had been for the past couple of months that Nino could almost convince himself that he had turned the corner and that this was going to be them for the rest of his life.
“Never!” Ohno cried jumping up and down again and taking his arm with him causing it to wave around almost painfully “You can never be too old to do what you love…Promise me, Kazu, please…”
Surprised and unnerved by the serious turn the conversation had suddenly taken and the expression on Ohno’s face as he said it Nino gave a strained laugh and snuggled closer to him his arms wrapping around what used to be a nice firm body but was now a hard bony figure.
“I promise…But…You’ll be with me…” He whispered pressing his face into the chest and ignoring the way that his nose crushed up against hard bone. He no longer smelt like the hospital but there was still something medical clinging to him and Nino knew that, although he hadn’t been told, his lover was once again getting treatments.
“I’ll always be with you Kazu…But…” Ohno chuckled sounding tearful as his hand moved up and down his back and Nino swallowed shaking his head and pulling away wiping away an irritating tear that had formed in the corner of his eye. “Kazu…”
“No…I don’t want to talk about it…I just want to enjoy our walk…” Nino said cutting him off again and wrapping his arms around Ohno’s pulling him away from the first pile of leaves and towards a second larger pile. Ohno went willingly and soon the heavy mood had lifted again as they started an all-out war of flicking leaves at each other. Nino was sure that his boyfriend was letting him win but he would take any advantage that he could dumping a load of leaves all over his head watching them fall like brightly coloured stars around him. He was so beautiful in that moment, with leaves sticking to his hat and out of his collar that Nino felt his breath catch and his heart skip across his ribs “I love you…”
“Kazu…” Ohno sighed pain flickering through his eyes and Nino quickly stepped forward covering his mouth with his hand and shaking his head again not wanting to hear the ‘I want you, I need you’ speech again. It was okay before when he was in the hospital when he was trying to keep him at a distance but now when there wasn’t much time left he wanted to hear those words, just once he wanted to hear them.
“I know…” He said softly unable to say the things that were swirling around in his brain and heart “I know that you can’t love me, Oh-chan, and that you're trying to protect me...But let me love you…”
“Kazu…" Ohno sighed his voice rushing out against his hand causing the slightest amount of breath to collect on his palm and Nino moved his hand away watching the perfectly plump mouth form the next sentence even though it wasn't what he wanted to hear "There will be somebody else, somebody that you’ll really be able to be with…”
"There will never be anyone like you..." Nino told him earnestly before almost shouting and screaming before burying his face against the chest "It's not fair...I wish we could just freeze time right now and just stay here..."
"Forever autumn...always kicking the leaves with you...yes I'd like that very much Kazu...just you and me...but it can't happen..." Ohno told him with a smile holding him at arm’s length before kissing his the tip of his nose "come on there's still a few more piles we can kick through before we have to get to the theatre for the show..."
*~*~*~*~*~*
“Sho…”Nino whispered blinking a few times as he came out of his memories remembering that Sho was waiting for him outside of the cemetery, having not wanted to disturb his time with Ohno. “I…I wanted to tell you about Sho…I mean I guess if you are with me as you said then…Then you know about him even though…After 8 years I haven’t told you...In fact I didn’t tell him about you either until last week…” Nino swallowed remembering the awkward anniversary dinner that had descended into him admitting everything. It was what had prompted this visit, he wouldn’t have normally come until next week otherwise as that was the anniversary of when he had gotten out of hospital. Nino had been positive that he had only done that because autumn was his favourite season followed closely by winter because that was when they got to snuggle or so he said. “…He’s a good guy…Better than I deserve anyway…I just wish that I could love him without feeling like I was letting you go…” The man whispered to the stone his eyes itchy with tears when a rain drop, small and insignificant, landed on his cheek and dribbled down like his tears wanted to do. "It's raining, Oh-chan...I'd better get going...I'll come again next week...I love you..."
He got awkwardly to his feet and then whispered a soft prayer before turning around and head down the long winding path to the gate smiling as he saw his lover waiting for him at the gate huddled as close to the wall as possible trying to protect himself form the light drizzle that was picking up speed.
"Sh-" he started stopping when a female voice started shouting;
"Satoshi! Stop kicking the leaves..."
Nino's eyes flew up and he smiled watching a boy of about five or six diving into a pile of fallen leaves on the side of the road. Guiltily he looked up and smiled at he mum before ruefully running his hand through his hair. He looked nothing like his Oh-chan but for some reason the tight hold that had been around his heart broke a little and he let out a loud bark of laughter that disturbed the birds and caused Sho to turn around and look at him with a raised eyebrow.
"Are you okay?" He asked as Nino reached his side and Nino nodded slowly a smile forming on his lips as he asked;
"Yeah...How are you at kicking leaves?"
"Kicking leaves? I haven't done that in years..." Sho answered his hand moving gently up and down his back and Nino's smile became a smirk as he eyed the pile that the boy Satoshi had been playing in.
"Then it's time you started again..."
The End
A/N: hmm Nino has quite moved on yet ne...But he's getting there slowly…I hope that this was okay ^_^
