Jun stared down at the phone in his hand willing it to ring. It was Saturday night and he was once again all alone but this time he had no idea why that was the case. Nino had been at work this morning with a presentation but he had promised that he would be back by seven at the latest. It was 15 minutes to 11 and there was still no word from his errant lover. Every time he called he just ended up getting Nino’s voice mail and he couldn’t keep ringing and ringing in case Nino was trying to get through to him. Nino’s voice could sometimes be grating but right now all he wanted was to hear the high pitched voice calling out his name and telling him that he was okay. The phone in his hand buzzed and Jun almost dropped the phone in shock. It wasn’t Nino but an unknown number that flashed up on the screen and slowly he answered it his heart thumping against his chest
“Hello?”
“Jun…” Nino’s voice was soft and distanced down the line and Jun pressed the phone into the ear trying to close the distance that had come between them.
“What happened? Where are you?” He hissed listening to the soft breathing that was coming down the line.
“Sorry to worry you, babe…” Nino whispered causing more worry to creep up his spine and collect at the base of his neck “I’m…Fine…I’m fine…I’m in the hospital…”
“What? Why…” Jun asked sinking deep into the bed keeping the phone pressed firmly to his ear not wanting to miss a single sound from his lover his mouth going dry.
“I was hit by a car a little…” Nino admitted his voice soft and the fine hairs prickled on his skin jolted like he had been stung as he jumped up in the bed planning to run out the apartment.
“What? Don’t tell me you’re fine and then tell me that…”
“Honestly I’m fine I was barely scratched but because it was so late they want to keep me in for observation…I’m really sorry, babe…I tried to call you earlier but my phone’s busted…Sorry…” Nino finished lamely and Jun barely heard him pulling out a jumper until he let out a little drunken sounding laugh “Don’t come down…I’m fine and it’s too late so they won’t let you in…Just come tomorrow morning…”
“Kazu…” Jun whispered his voice sounding shaky to his ears and there was another laugh from Nino the sound calming his wildly beating heart and he sank down on the edge of the bed staring at the wall his eyes suddenly itching and stinging close to tears though he was willing himself not to cry.
“Please, don’t cry, babe…” Nino whispered his voice as soft and warm as honey against his ear the sound causing a tear to break free and roll down his cheek.
“I’m not…” Jun denied pointlessly blinking rapidly to shift the tears from his eyes his bottom lip trembling a little even though he was fighting hard to stop it.
“Aww really? I thought that an accident was worth a few tears…But oh well…” Nino laughed a little and the sound really was like music to his ears telling him that he really was okay even if he was in the hospital and not with him. "Seriously, J, I'm fine just go to bed lie down and get some sleep, okay?”
"You haven't left me a t-shirt..." Jun grumbled almost childishly looking around the barren room knowing that he wasn’t going to get much sleep without Nino being here. He would never know how he became so dependent on his lover but he was, he needed him more than anyone else in his life. It was a scary thing to admit but even the sound of his voice and breathing was enough for his body to react like a well-trained puppy. Nino gave another chuckle that caused a ripple to run through his body before he hummed light the sound vibrating through him.
"I think there's one in the clothes basket..." Nino offered and Jun’s bottom lip stuck out as he looked at the stack of clothing that was waiting on the side to be put away for tomorrow morning “What’s up? I can hear that your breathing changed…”
"I washed it earlier..." Jun admitted reluctantly causing another light laugh from his lover before the older man whispered lightly and fondly;
"I knew that your OCD would come back to haunt you one day…You’ll have to use my pillow it's just for one night...”
“I still won’t be able to sleep…” Jun flopped back onto the bed wincing a little as all of the muscles in his body cracked and creaked, there was another honey sweet laugh from his lover but his voice seemed a little pinched a hazy when he teased him.
“Aww poor baby…Read your book…”
“Stay on the line, Kazu…Please…I want to hear you…I need to…” Jun begged when it felt like Nino was about to hang up on him. He could hear the older man rolling his eyes before his voice sounded out again.
“This is costing me a fortune…But for you…Okay…What do you want me to talk about?”
“What were you doing when you got hit…?” Jun asked and he heard the sound of Nino drawing in a loud breath before he hissed.
“No way, I’m not talking about that, you’ll have nightmares and I won’t be there to snuggle with you…” He purred and Jun had to admit that the sound of his voice affected him in ways that he wasn’t sure that he wanted to admit “My rooms nice though a little too pink for my liking and the nurse was really nice even if she did get a little fresh…”
“Fresh?”
“Yeah…She enjoys her job little too much…J, are you getting ready for bed at least…?”
“Yes, yes…” Jun said dismissively getting back up and reluctantly stripping out of his clothes and getting into the bed on Nino’s side. As he was doing so Nino sang softly in his ear, his lover wasn’t the best singer in the world but he really did put the most emotion that he had ever heard and since he didn’t do it very often it meant that it was all the more sweeter when he did. “I love you, Kazu…”
“I love you too…You know what would really help you sleep?”
“What?” Jun asked with a raised eyebrow and he was positive that he could hear Nino’s smirk as he said.
