The Tattoo chapter forty-four

krystalkatzficzNino sighed staring up at the crystal clear sky his mind swimming with too many thoughts. By some minor miracle they had made it to a road side in before the night fell and by an even better coincidence they were the only ones there so his uncle had been able to get a room by himself. His mind was still replaying what had happened at the river bank and what would happen when his uncle would learn the truth. Although they hadn’t spoken of him again his uncle had made it very clear that he did not like his lord.
“Tiger are you okay? You have been strange since your uncle mentioned your lord…” The prince whispered lightly, reading his mind again as he came up behind him and wrapped his arms around his waist resting his chin on his shoulder and swaying him gently. It was a very intimate gesture and one that Nino knew he should resist now that they were alone together but he couldn’t his body craved the warmth and even the tangy scent of wax that was clinging to the robes of the prince since he had been polishing his weapons.
“I…Admit that I was surprised by the venom in my uncle’s voice as he spoke of my lord, I wish to know how my lord had offended him but I did not bring myself to ask…” Nino murmured closing his eyes and listening to the soothing sound of Ohno’s breathing against his ear “Not just because he would have wondered at my need to know but…Because I was afraid that I would agree with his reasons…I…I…My lord Sakurai he has saved me more times than I can count and although he gives me punishment he also treats me with compassion, you have not seen him at his best…I know what he did to your sister…And I…I believe it…But I know that it does haunt him…” Ohno stiffened against him his arms tightening around his waist and Nino quickly continued “…And perhaps made him the man that he is now, he does feel bad for what he has done…”
“And so he should…” Ohno growled seemingly about to pull away and quickly Nino turned wrapping his arms around the older man’s neck and pressing a light calming kiss to the corner of his mouth. Ohno looked as surprised as he was but it felt so right and natural that he didn’t want to apologise for it.
“…My hope is that Masaki will be able to give him the love that he needs…That…”
“He once wanted from you?” Ohno said finishing the sentence that Nino couldn’t. The assassin nodded slowly trying desperately to hold on to his old personality even though he knew that it was already lost in the blushing fool that Ohno had turned him into. “Why could you not love him tiger?”
“I do not know…I have…I have never had those feelings for him…I see him only as my lord and perhaps a brother…” Nino answered honestly turning again in the man’s arms but not moving completely out of the warm embrace “There was a time that I tried to love him…but no matter how I tried I could not do so…”
“Perhaps in your heart you knew the truth of him…” Ohno whispered his breath rushing against his ear and Nino’s eyes closed as a happy shiver ran the length of his spine. He knew that he was playing a very dangerous game and he knew that it would only get harder with each passing moment but he was enjoying the intimacy of this “I cannot pretend that I understand you or your relationship with your lord but…At the time when you were saved by your lord you were young scared and confused…Though I believe that you were a tiger even then, how else would you have survived?” The prince smiled turning him around and gently stroking his face with his fingers very lightly. You needed somebody...You needed that and I am glad that he was there for you…Now come…You must want to read the scroll of your family, I can imagine that the secrets that it holds must be of great interest to you…”
“You…You do not mind keeping the candle burning?” Nino asked remembering that he had meant to ask but the thought of his uncle and lord sent the thought out of his mind. Ohno shook his head his forefinger sliding down the length of his nose before lightly bopping the bulb
“Of course not, I saw how excited you were and I will work more on the statue for your boy…I wish to finish it so we can send it when we reach the palace…” He said moving away from him completely and Nino felt his heart swell again at how much the prince cared for his boy and he barely felt the chill whipping around him before he closed the window “I imagine that there will be a great many things that you wish to send him, there are some fantastic things that you will wish to send him…”
“…I promised him that I would send him many things…” Nino smiled sitting down on his bedroll and taking out the scroll from his pack.
They fell into a comfortable silence Nino devouring the scroll with more festination than he had any of his lessons noticing that every now and then there were messages written in the margins and he was positive that the thick and heavy strokes were his mother’s. It had her style and sense of humour, some of the compositions of the poisons and cures were corrected by the same hand. He noticed that she had noticed the same things as him and that made him proud and connected to her in a way that he had never been before.
“Tiger…” Ohno’s voice cut into his mind and Nino looked up in surprise, shocked at how much the candle had burned down and the tray that was in the prince’s hand “I thought that you would like a drink…The scroll is of interest to you?”
“Yes, my mother and, I think, grandmother left notes and corrections, it is truly wonderful…” Nino enthused before stopping his cheeks flushing brightly as he apologised quickly “I apologise for rambling…It…It is just that I…I have never been this close to my family…”
“I understand and I am happy for you…May I look?” Ohno asked nodding his head at the scroll and Nino nodded taking the tray from him and allow him to sit down in front of him. “The Autumn crocus…” the prince read aloud in his soft voice “…As beautiful as the Autumn crocus is it is also probably the most poisonous….Unlike other toxins found in the flowers above, colchicine, an arsenic-like poison has no antidote…Symptoms may include diarrhoea, vomiting, blood in the urine, cramping muscles, hair loss, stomach pain, and more convulsions. The organs of the body that are usually affected by arsenic poisoning are the lungs, skin, kidneys, and liver… The final result of this type of poisoning is coma and then death…I shall never look at the flower in the same way again…I always admired the plant for its beauty…”
“Many plants have those affects or variations of those…But…I have never thought to use that one…” Nino told him his lips around the cup and Ohno chuckled again pushing the scroll down into the roll.
“I think that I have never seen you this happy…I am unsure if I should be nervous by that, I have felt your needles before your mother’s work I can imagine how powerful you will be when you have devoured all of this…”
“…I promise that, as much as I am tempted sometimes, I will never use my needles on you again…” Nino smiled liking the new easy atmosphere that was between them now and although he was terrified of slipping up he knew that he wouldn’t spill up completely because Ohno wouldn’t let him, he knew that because the prince’s feelings were genuine he wouldn’t make him risk Takayuki. It was strange to have that it wasn’t something that he had had before and although he wasn’t sure what it was he didn’t want lose it.
“You should never make promises you may have to break spider…” Ohno whispered confusing and scaring him a little until he heard a warm laugh and a hand resting on his shoulder “I have grown fond of your pretty blush and I am sure you will want to place me into a coma before our mission is done…But for now I suggest that we sleep…I will hold you if the dreams come…”
