Nino whispered holding the golden 'scale' tightly in his hand watching his boy talking happily to the fish in the pond and he made a mental not to ask Masaki to make sure he didn't try to join them in the water when he was not there.
"No tale of magical fish will do that while you are not with him but I hope that his mind is eased while you are apart..." Ohno told him softly and Nino tried not to let his heart jump around at the words. “I had hoped that you would remember…”
“Remember my lord?” The assassin questioned his eyes knitting together curiously and the prince smiled a little giving a nod.
“Yes, the tale had some base for truth…You were the little fish though…You saved my sister’s hair pin…” He answered and Nino frowned guessing that he should have guessed. During the tale it had been beating so quickly that his was positive that a pattern had been hammered into the breast plate "I am truly sorry that I have to take you away so quickly and for so long..."
"The length I understand..." Nino told him with a smile looking away from Takayuki to stare at the prince who lifted an eyebrow and bowed his head a little to motion for him to continue "You wish to build bridges with the nobles in your father's palace so they will not question your right to rule... It is a logical move but one I find surprising considering that you do not wish to rule..."
"No but I wish for change the power at the top is corrupt and thus Japan is corrupt...Soured by its leader..." Ohno spat his face clouding with distaste as he looked out over the garden his eye clouded and distant as if he were no longer seeing the garden with its flowers and pond but something more disturbing "For so long I was wandering the poorest and furthest areas and I found the same kind of brutality that my father so enjoys..."
"And so you wish to save it?" Nino asked surprised when is voice came out as a husky whisper choked with emotion at what the prince was saying. A week ago he had thought of him as nothing more than an irritating flirt but now, to his surprise, he knew that there was more to the prince than that. Ohno blinked pulling his gaze back to him as his head shook from side to side as he gave a smile answering;
"I am just one man, polluted already by my own lust for revenge I have no right to save it..."
"Then I do not and cannot understand you...” Nino sighed his forehead wrinkling as he shook his head and kicking a stone that was by his foot. “I know that it is not my place to say, but you are wrong…I...I believe that you will make a fine emperor my lord, you have the strength needed but also the heart you will rule fairly..."
"No…I thank you for your faith in me…” Ohno smiled reaching out and taking his hand and giving it a squeeze. Nino allowed the action though held himself stiff nibbling at the corner of his lip hoping and praying that his lord’s spies weren’t watching though he did pull his hand away as if it had been “I would rule better if you were at my side...tiger"
"I am a man tainted my lord far more than you…” Nino whispered softly proud that he was able to keep his voice level “...Besides I cannot give you an heir that you will need to secure your power..."
"I do not need that…I just want you…” Ohno growled taking a step closer to him and gripping him tightly by the shoulders looking as if he was about to kiss him. Nino swallowed his eyes going to the lips aching to be kissed but knowing that he couldn’t allow that to happen. Collecting all of his strength into himself he took a step backwards pulling himself out of the hands as he shook his head.
“My lord…Please stop this foolishness, I would hate to have to use my poison again…” He said with honesty in his voice his eyes going again to his boy who was still beside the pond but looking at them with a curious expression on his beautiful face. “I thank-you for your tale for my boy but I would like for us, myself and Takayuki, to be alone now…I do not have the time that I would like…And I still need to pack…I have no desire to walk around the palace in the nude…”
“I apologise, of course you wish to be with your boy, and there is also much that I must do…” Ohno nodded sadly his shoulders sagging as he heaved out a loud sigh which rocked his body before he bowed and then turned on his heel walking back to the house without another word. Nino watched him leave wondering how he was going to be able to resist the sweet words the prince gave out when they were alone together. He hoped that the promise of being with his boy again would make it easier for him but he knew that it wouldn’t be easy.
Nino shook his head and let out a sigh before clearing his expression and turning to Takayuki and opening his arms.
“Come here…” He called and almost immediately a warm body was pressed against his and a mouth was pressed into his neck. “I so wish that I did not have to leave you…But I know that the little fish will look after you…”
“…I will miss you…” Takayuki whispered against his ear his voice shaking and his whole body trembling with the tears that had started again and Nino had to close his own eyes tightly breathing deeply through his nose to calm his own heart and stop his own tears before he was able to say;
“I will miss you with all my heart until we meet again, Takayuki, but I am not sad because we will meet again…You are my boy and nothing will keep us apart for long…”
“I am your baby bird…” Takayuki sniffed pulling away and trying to give him a brave smile which was ruined by the red rings around his eyes and the way that his lip trembled his cheeks shiny with his tear track.
“Always…” Nino nodded cupping his cheek and wiping away the tears. He kissed his nose before linking their arms and leading him to the house “Come help me pack and then I will prepare for you your favourite sweet…”
“Really? Yay!” Takayuki screamed loudly jumping up and down before stopping and pulling them up short “Ah but it is passed dinner time!”
“I think that we can make an exception for tonight…” Nino grinned deciding that the best thing for them to do was eat all his favourite treats before playing games and telling stories before his boy fell to sleep.
Nino did better than even he had hoped devoting every moment to doing everything that Takayuki wanted until they ended up in the bed together with the boy’s head on his chest as he told him all of the stories that he had his hand moving up and down his arm and back his mouth pressing light kisses to his forehead while Takayuki cried onto his chest making him promise that he would write to him.
“You will read them?” Nino asked with a chuckle thinking of all the times he had tried to teach his boy to read. It had never taken.
“I…I will ask Masaki to read them!” Takayuki snapped sleepily his chin jutting out as he turned his face to him. Nino nodded kissing his forehead and squeezing him tightly, he wasn’t sure if he would be able to write or how he would be able to get the letters to him if he could but he nodded anyway.
“I will write, my boy, I promise…Now you should sleep…When you wake…I should be gone…”
“No! I will be there to say goodbye, I promise father! I will see you…”
“Okay, I believe you…Now sleep, little bird, I still have to see our lord tonight” Nino smiled and Takayuki settled down around him holding him tightly fighting with the sleep until his breaths slowly evened out and soft snores filled the room. Nino waited until he was sure he was in a deep sleep and then rose from the bed walking to his lord’s room feeling like a man condemned while reassuring himself it would be his last time for a while.
