The Tattoo chapter thirty-three
Nino led Takayuki to a bench that was not too far away and then removed his outer robe draping it over his boy’s shoulders. It was slightly too small for him now but it reminded him of all the times that he had done this before and when Takayuki stared up at him with an innocent smile and a wide eyed expression on his face all he wanted to do was crush him to his chest and promise that he wouldn’t leave him but he couldn’t. He had to make it seem like it was no big deal and they would be together again soon. He wasn’t a fool and he knew that each and every time he left the estate of his lord it could be his last but he had never felt the fear that he was feeling now. He was going against the emperor, a man that both his lord and the prince clearly feared, there was much that could go wrong.
“Takayuki…” He said threading his fingers through his boy’s wet hair and smiling the best that he could “Tomorrow I have to go away…”
“Ah! I haven’t packed!” Takayuki gasped fearfully trying to get to his feet but Nino shook his head his smile not faltering as he replied;
“No…You will not need too, you are staying here this time…”
“What…But…Why?” The boy gasped his face completely closing in on itself as his eyes immediately filled with tears. His bottom lip trembled a little as he asked “Did I do something wrong?”
“No! Of course not, you could never do anything wrong, you are perfect, Takayuki…” Nino denied quickly his fingertips moving over the moles on his boy’s lips in the way that he had always done when he was upset “It is because…Because you have to stay here and look after Masaki this time…” He whispered hoping that Takayuki would take that as an excuse. The boy frowned his head tilting to one side as his impressive eyebrows drew together wrinkling the skin in between them as he asked in a small still tearful voice;
“But…Who will look after you?”
“That will be my job, if you will allow me it…” Ohno said softly from by Nino’s side and the assassin again cursed silently that he had realised how close the man was to him. Now that he knew he was there it was obvious with the warmth that was flowing out from his body and the way that the faint hairs on his own arms were tingling against him. Takayuki stared at him for a long time his eyes wide and wet, his mouth opening and closing a few times before he shouted;
“…But…Father doesn’t like you! He told me…”
“I made a mistake…” Nino said swiftly cupping his boys cheeks and turning his face back to him and giving the best smile that he could “I was wrong, Lord Ohno is a fine man who will protect me, not as good as my boy will…I promise Takayuki we will see each other again more quickly than you know…”
“But…I…” Takayuki stammered his sobs becoming louder now, huge gasps as his body shook and he stared up at them. Nino fought back his own tears swallowing deeply and snorting through his nose wishing that he could stop them. “Don’t leave me, please! I’ll be good…I promise…”
“Takayuki-kun, would you like to hear the story of the golden fish now?” Ohno cut in and Takayuki looked troubled and torn excitement mingling with the sadness in his eyes as he bit his lip a fat tear rolling down each cheek. Nino smiled wiping the fluid away with his thumbs and pressing a kiss to his forehead before hugging him tightly for a second and pulling away saying as brightly as he could;
“I would like to hear it my lord, I am intrigued by the fish that can grant wishes…Are you not excited, Takayuki? To have a fish that can grant wishes would be fun, ne?”
“I…Yes…Thank-you lord…Sir…” Takayuki nodded and Nino almost sighed with gratefulness as he sat down in the grass and his boy quickly joined him his head in his lap still sobbing and shaking quietly and Nino ran his fingers through his hair and rocking him the best that he could. Ohno sat on the bench his arms resting on his knees as he gave a cough to clear his throat before starting his story in a soft gentle voice;
“There was once a very plain brown fish…He was smaller than the other fish and slower so he could not swim and keep up with the other fish, when he tried to eat he was pushed away so there was never any chance that he could grow big and strong” The prince said and Nino smiled as Takayuki gasped loudly already captivated by the new story “He stayed at the bottom of the pond in the dark eating on the scraps of food until one day a beautiful princess, named Riko, came to the pond. All of the big beautiful fish jumped around trying to get her attention but the little brown fish was so embarrassed that he stayed at the bottom of the pond thinking that somebody like that would never like him…”
“What happened?” Takayuki asked through a sniff though his voice sounded a little clearer now and he had stopped shaking. Nino smiled a little at the prince knowing that this was a story that had been made up to amuse his sister at some point and it must be painful for him to talk about it now.
“The princess accidently dropped her hair pin into the pond” Ohno smiled “It had been a gift from her brother and she treasured it greatly. All of the other fish were too busy swimming around and showing off to notice that she was crying that the hair pin had sank to the bottom of the pond the little brown fish noticed though and he picked it up in his mouth and slowly he swam to the top of the pond…It took him a very long time but he could not stand to see the princess upset…His nose rose out of the water and the princess gasped as she looked at him. The brown fish was so ashamed of his looks that he quickly placed the pin onto the side. He was about to swim back down again when the princess kissed his nose thanking him for retrieving her pin…The little brown fish blushed so hard that his whole skin changed and he became as golden as the pin that he had rescued…”
“Wow…And then what? How did he start to grant wishes!?” Takayuki asked sitting up now his earlier upset seemingly forgotten as he bounced up and down. Ohno smiled reaching out and ruffling his hair.
“The little golden fish was so pleased with himself about what had happened, not that he was now golden but that he had helped the princess when she was upset, and he decided that he wanted to help more people who were upset. He knew that he would not be able to do that staying in the pond so, summoning all of his strength he jumped out of the pond and into a stream that flowed nearby…The stream currents were very strong but the little golden fish was determined…He swam with all his might until he found himself in a river. He soon heard somebody else crying and he swam over to them hoping to help…He found a beautiful boy this time, whose name was Ninomiya…”
“Ninomiya! Like father!” Takayuki gasped turning and grinning at him and Nino smiled while finding himself blushing at suddenly being included in the story.
“Yes…Just like your father…” Ohno chuckled his eyes dancing a little “Now Ninomiya was a very brave boy and everybody was very envious of him but nobody knew that he was lonely or that he wanted somebody that would love him…Of course he would never tell anyone that but he told the little golden fish…The fish was moved by the boy’s story but he did not know how he could help him he swam around for days puzzling over his problem worried that he would fail in his first task but then suddenly he heard a baby crying, a baby that needed just as much love as Ninomiya…So he came up with a plan he decided that he would get Ninomiya and the baby together…It was a good plan Ninomiya loved that baby and the baby loved him very much and the little golden fish was so pleased that he was able to help somebody else that he jumped out of the water in joy and he never dropped back! He realised that he could fly like a bird through the air…And so he continued on his journey helping people the best that he could. The goddess Amaterasu noticed what the little golden fish was doing and she wanted to help so she made it possible for the little fish to be able to grant wishes…And that what he still does today…”
“Wow…but how do you find the little golden fish?” The boy asked as the story came to an end and Ohno smiled again shaking his head.
“You do not he finds you, whenever you are sad he will come and he will listen to your wish and he will try and make it come true…”
“I’m sad now…” Takayuki mumbled and Nino hugged him tightly kissing his cheek and agreeing softly;
“So am I…”
“Then I think that you should make a wish…” Ohno said and Nino nodded humming for a minute.
“I cannot wish to stay Takayuki, but I will wish that we can see each other again soon and that you will be strong and look after Masaki while I am away…” He whispered his eyes closing and he knew that Takayuki closed his eyes too taking it very seriously as he mumbled;
“I wish that father will come home soon and that the little golden fishy will look after him!”
“Oh! Look! Look at that!” Ohno gasped suddenly and Nino opened his eyes blinking in surprise at the startled cry the lord released and he found Ohno standing over them his hand open showing to golden flecks on his palm that could almost pass as fish scales “There see, Takayuki, the golden fish heard you…And he left this to tell you that he will…There you should each keep these to let you know that the golden fish will grant your wishes…”
