Disclaimer: I only own the plot,
Matsumoto Jun stared up at the apartment building nervously chewing on his lips telling himself that he should go home and that his bandmate wouldn’t appreciate him coming around unannounced like this. It was one of the only two rules that they had within Arashi, although they loved each other enough to be called brothers, there was such a thing as too much time together and private time was private time. He doubted that Arashi’s resident brat would like the fact that he’d actually phoned their manager to find out where he’s bandmate lived now. He would have asked Aiba, he was the only one that didn’t follow the rules after all, but that would have felt like betrayal even if he couldn’t understand why. Maybe it was because Nino had phoned him and not somebody else.
He’d been relaxing at home a glass of chilled wine in his hand and his script out on his knee in front of him with classical music playing in the background. After the whirl of filming and press releases he had really been enjoying his moment of peace and then the phone had rang cutting through his peace like an angry banshee. His first thought had been to ignore it to pretend that it hadn’t existed but when he saw the name and picture flashing up on screen he knew that he couldn’t. Nino rarely called him out of work hours and of those rare times it was to wish him happy birthday. Since Jun was pretty sure that he hadn’t forgotten his own birthday he had to admit that he’d been surprised and worried that Nino was calling him and had hit the answer button before he could stop himself.
“Nino…Is everything okay?” He’d asked and there was a shaky breath down the line, a hiss that had felt odd “Nino…”
“…J…I just wanted to hear you say that…” Nino breathed against his ear and Jun had felt the hairs all over his body raise and sting with warning at the broken sound that was against his ear. “Thanks…”
The phone had clicked off and Jun had tried to ring back almost immediately to find that it had been switched off. With relaxation furthest from his mind Jun had called the manager straight away and then as soon as he had apologised for calling on the man’s personal time he had called a taxi.
And that was how he had ended up outside Nino’s apartment building at 3am pacing backwards and forwards like a caged lion trying to work up the courage to go and check on the man. Just as he walked up to the speaker system the door buzzed and opened and two very tipsy girls almost fell out laughing and stumbling over each other and looking at him with unfocused bloodshot eyes
“Hey you look just like…Whatizname? Hiro…” One said waving her hand around and Jun wished he had thought of bringing something to cover his face but since they didn’t seem to have made the connection yet he gave a smile and then hurried passed them before the door could close. He looked at his hand where he had written out the address. Floor Six, room 89. The elevator was already at ground level so all he had to wait was for a few seconds but the short amount of time had him replaying the strange phone call and wondering if he was just falling for a prank from Nino. There was a chance that the smaller man had been drunk and called him but it didn’t fit with Nino’s character. Nino wasn’t that good an actor that he could fool Jun or any of the other members.
He was still going mad as he hurried down the corridor scanning all of the identical brass number plates carefully until he found the one that he was looking for. It was the second to last door on the hallway by the fire escape and painted in a soft cream. It was the same colour as the rest of the doors but it was fresher like it had been done recently and sure enough when he went to knock a sticky cream trail was left over his knuckles. The door swung open freely by itself though and Jun had to force down his fear as he peered into the darkness that was meant to be his bandmates apartment calling out;
“Nino?” in a hesitant voice that sounded alien to his own ears. There was no answer and taking a breath for courage Jun kicked the door open wincing when it scraped over broken glass. The sound was almost like that of nails being ran over a chalk board and he was half way from ringing the police when a muffled sound stopped him. It was like the whimper of a dog and he hurried over without thinking, only using the pale moonlight through the windows as his guide. A slumped over figure in the middle of the living room had his heart almost stopping and he was strangely glad when there was another whimper “Nino?!” He called again sinking carefully to his knees aware that there was more glass around them “Nino…”
“Wha-…Why…Are you…Here?” Nino whimpered as Jun rolled him over and stared in horror at the face. Blood was everywhere his mouth, eyes and nose. There was bruising around his neck and his arm was twisted in a way that suggested that it was out of its socket.
“You called me…Nino your eye is bleeding..." Jun pointed out needlessly before pulling a handkerchief from the depths of his pocket about to press it to the bleeding eye of his bandmate horrified by what he was seeing. All around him the apartment was in disarray like it had been hit by a mini tornado. He spat on the handkerchief and then slowly wiped gasping in surprise and horror when Nino gave a small scream and the bleeding got worse. “Nino, there’s glass in your face…I’ve got to phone for an ambulance…”
“No! No…Can’t…” Nino hissed fearfully bringing up his uninjured arm and grabbing at his hand and squeezing it as tightly as he could which wasn’t very tight at all. “It’s okay…Just a mild…”
“Mild? Are you fucking kidding me? Nothing about this is mild…Were you burgled?” Jun asked looking around again deciding that a burglar turning the place over would make this much mess but Nino shook his head slowly.
“No…It…” He stared before stopping and biting on his broken lip causing him to hiss out in pain as more blood ran down his chin “It’s nothing…”
“Nothing?” Jun spat back wondering if his friend had lost his marbles in the attack. He couldn’t understand what was wrong, there was so much fear and shame in his friend’s eyes that it was almost painful. What would have him begging not to go to the hospital when he was clearly in so much pain? If this ever did hit the papers there was no way that Nino wouldn’t be painted as the victim not even by the ones that didn’t like them, not unless there was something else. The last time he had seen somebody so defensive it was leader and his drug problem. He had never thought that Nino would be the type for that, not after his reaction to finding out about Ohno’s, but you could never be sure “Are you in some kind of trouble? Is it…Drugs…?”
“What? No fucking way…” Nino spat hissing with pain as he tried to move away. A scream tore through his throat and Jun’s fingers itched over his phone about to ignore his friend’s wishes and just call for an ambulance “I’m fine…Some painkillers and…”
“Nino, for fuck’s sake, your arm is dislocated and you’ve got glass in your face…And, although I can’t see them ’m guessing a whole load of other injuries…” Jun said his eyes running over the clothed parts of his friend’s body “Look whatever the reason that you don’t want to go to hospital…”
“…He’ll tell…He’ll tell the papers…” Nino whispered and Jun was horrified to realise that he was crying a little tears mixing with the blood on his cheek in a way that he knew had to be causing more pain for the smaller guy. Jun frowned staring into his eyes and hissing out with more than mild frustration;
“Who will? Nino you’re not making any sense…”
“My boyfriend…”
