krystalkatzficzSho stared at the twins his mouth open, all of the air had rushed out of his lungs at once and he was positive that he had been punched in the stomach. His eyes flickered over to Katrina who just gave a shrug and a smile before looking away. Sho let his eyes go back to the curious faces of his children who appeared to be waiting eagerly for something and he sucked in much needed oxygen to whisper;
“How…”
“We guessed…We talked about it last night…It’s obvious really” The twins said together again giving each other smiles. “We have your eyes and Shoko is called Sho!”
“If I was called that because you were a friend of daddy’s then Jun would have been called Kazu because of Uncle Nino…” Shoko said alone with a shrug of her small shoulders scrapping the hair away from her glasses “Uncle Nino saved daddy a lot and he has always been there!”
“So if he wasn’t special enough to have one of us to be named after him we knew that it had to be because of something else…” Jun took up his fingers still around the silver pen set “And the only thing that made sense was that you had to be our other father!”
“So is it true?” they said together and Sho’s mouth went dry even as he gulped. He looked over at the door he couldn’t say anything without talking to Masaki first. Thankfully it seemed that Masaki had been listening in and he came into the room looking more tired than ever.
“Yes…” He whispered slowly, sinking down into the chair drawing a pattern in the flour on the back of his hand “Yes, Sho-chan is your other father…I wanted you to get to know him before I told you…But I should have guessed that you would be so smart you would guess the truth!”
Sho smiled gratefully at his ex, Masaki looked so tired and lost that Sho reached over without thinking and took his hand linking their fingers and stroking the back of his hand gently. It was the best feeling in the world when instead of pushing him away, like he had thought he would, Masaki squeezed his hand and gave him a tiny smile.
“Your daddy is and always has been the most incredible person that I’ve ever met…” Sho said honestly turning back to the children continuing to stroke Masaki’s hand with his thumb. Even after all these years it fit perfectly against his, their fingers slotting together like they had been made for that and he had to admit that it gave him courage “And you’re right I love him very much…”
“So you’ll marry him?” The twins gasped eagerly moving forward, their presents forgotten as they came to kneel in front of their chairs. Sho opened his mouth to speak but Masaki got in first stumbling and mumbling;
“That…I don’t know…I...Um…”
“Why didn’t you marry him anyway?” Jun asked his eyes narrowing as his face clouded with disappointment that quickly spread to Shoko’s face “Daddy said it was because you were both really young…But…Didn’t you love us? Or daddy…?”
“No!” Sho snapped quickly and more sharply than he had intended, he refused to allow them to think that if he had known he wouldn’t have loved them but he didn’t want to make Masaki out to be the bad guy either. The blame should lie where it was deserved “My parents are not very nice people…”
“Grandmother and Grandfather Sakurai are horrible…” Katrina muttered from her place in the corner and she quickly went a bright shade of burnt red when everybody turned to look at her and then tried to make herself as small as possible.
“That’s right…When they found out that your daddy was having you they said some very unforgivable things, things that they had no right to say and they scared your daddy very much…” Sho said trying to force himself not to get angry again, he hadn’t finished punishing his parents for what they had done yet, not by a long shot. They would pay for the threats they had given and for the last 10 years of his and Masaki’s lives. Masaki’s fingers tightened on his and a gentle but rough thumb pad brushed over the back of his hand and Sho turned flashing a grateful smile when his anger vanished “Because he already loved you so much he went away...”
“But you didn’t? Why didn’t you go with Daddy?”
“I would have done, but my parents told your daddy that if he saw me again…Something very bad would happen…” Sho murmured carefully not wanting the children to know that their lives had been threatened “I didn’t know that so I tried to find him but your daddy has to be the champion at hide and seek…”
“But you’ve found him now, so you can get married!” Shoko gasped happily her hands clapping enthusiastically while Jun’s head bobbed up and down like one of those nodding dogs his glasses sliding up and down his nose and his hair shining in the light as he added;
“Yeah! You’re both old now so you don’t have to listen to your parents…”
“…I…” Sho started but Masaki cut over him letting go of his hand and saying briskly;
“We can’t”
“Why? You always told us that you loved other daddy…” Shoko said her excitement vanishing as he sat back on her legs her bottom lip sticking out as her arms crossed over her chest. It was a look that was quickly mirrored by her twin and they continued together “Whenever people tried to go out with you…You always said no ‘Because you were already in love with somebody’…All of your stories about you and other daddy…You are always smiling and other…Uncle…Papa…It is obvious…”
Sho had to admit that the idea of other people trying to date his Masaki was unsettling and angered him he was glad that they had been shot down because of him. Masaki lapsed into silence settling back against the back of the chair, his whole face becoming hollowed out and, although he wanted to join the children in asking why they couldn’t just date and get married, Sho knew that he had to support Masaki. He had poured his whole heart out into the letter last night he had to wait and see Masaki’s reaction. He was also baffled and impressed that both his children had decided that they wanted him in their lives even after one day, he could only imagine that it had to do with stories Masaki had told them about him.
“Your daddy and I…We were together a long time ago…And although we do love each other still” Sho said confidently risking just a glance at Masaki who stayed silent watching him through his shadowed eyes “It is complicated…We’ve both got older and we’ve changed a lot…We have to see if we love the people that we are now or just the memories…Do you understand?”
“…I think so…But I think you’re wasting time!” Jun pouted his arms still folded across his chest “You’ve already wasted ten years...You’ll be too old soon!”
“I’m only 26…and Sho-chan is only 28…” Masaki giggled a little destroying some of the tension that had built around them and Sho gave a laugh of his own;
“I guess to children we’ve passed it already…” he shrugged loving the look that was in his Masaki’s face. He basked in it a little and then turned back to the children “…I hope that we do love each other enough to date and then get married one day but even if that doesn’t happen I want you to know that I want you to be in my life, until yesterday I didn’t even know that you existed but I really want to be a good dad to you…”
“Uncle Sho is the best! He’s a million times better than my dad!” Katrina said hurrying over and placing her arm around his neck her head resting against him. He couldn’t see it but he suspected that she was glaring daring anybody to contradict her. The twins stared at her for a moment and then Shoko gave a laugh saying loudly;
“This means we’re cousins! That is so cool!”
“It is…” Jun agreed flashing a smile and Sho chuckled feeling Katrina stiffen and then blush against him. Sho gave a chuckle his hand moving up and down her back trying to calm her down as nerves clawed up inside himself as he asked;
“So…What do you say? Will you give me a chance?”
