When he finally arrived back at his mum’s small holding it had started raining again, not that that had stopped his mum from tending the vegetable patch. His heart stung as he watched her crouched, rain slamming against her thin body concern filling every pore of his body when he thought about the chest infection.
“What are you doing?” He shouted storming over to her and Kazuko looked up with a small confused smile “You’re sick, you should be resting!”
“Ah I take it that you saw Jun-kun?” She murmured pulling off her gloves and wiping a towel over her rain splattered face “He should have also told you that it was serious”
“He said that it could become serious… you should go in…” He snapped about to grab her shoulder and Kazuko sighed batting his hand away
“I’m fine… I feel fine” She said with more than a trace of anger in her voice. Their tempers had always flared up when they were together for too long and soon they were both staring at each other with their hands of their hips.
“Mu-…”
“No… What do you think I’ve been doing while you’ve been off living it up in the big city? You leave for nearly 10 years and then think you can come back and start ordering me about?” She hissed her eyes flashing in the same way his did when he was angry and wanting a fight. “I don’t think so young man…”
“Mum, I didn’t mean… I’m just worried about you” He said wondering why it had come to this, he had only wanted to help her and now she was looking like he was her mortal enemy.
“Worried about me? That’s the first time you’ve been worried about me…”
“That’s not true” He said over the rain that had started to get faster and harder. “Please… Let’s just go inside, not even you can work in this… Please…”
“Fine” She growled walking through the now sludgy sloppy mud. Nino followed her and soon they had taken up their battle stances in the living room though both of them looked a little less fired up now,
“You know that isn’t true though, right mum?” He asked “I’m always worried about you, I asked you to move to Tokyo…”
Kazuko sighed gripping the back of the chair tightly as she looked at him the anger vanishing from her face
“I know you did… I’m sorry” she sighed and Nino felt a stab of guilt shoot into his heart. It was true that as soon as he had been old enough and able to leave he had been gone faster than lightning, he hadn’t even thought twice about his mum or how she would cope alone without him working all hours on the farm while he was living it up. She had supported him though quietly from here and he had barely even liked phoning her. He remembered that she had phoned him a few weeks ago sounding terrible as if somebody had clawed at her lungs when he had asked what was wrong she had said she was fine, he hadn’t cared enough to question it. Wrapped up in his own little world he hadn’t cared about anything else.
“I’m here now mum…” He mumbled slowly wondering why everything was such a huge mess. Kazuko gave him another smile that didn’t quite reach her eyes as she patted his hand.
“I know you are… But for how long?” She asked and Nino’s mouth opened and closed for a while. He still had three weeks left of holiday, three weeks to make up his mind about what he wanted to do but he couldn’t find an answer it was still too painful to think about. “Let’s just forget what I said, I’m just tired and fed up with the rain… Did you speak to Jun-kun?”
“Yes… He said that he was coming to see you this afternoon anyway…” Nino answered deciding if that was what she wanted for now he'd do it, but just like a lot of other things they were going to have to talk about it eventually remembering what he wanted to ask her as he pulled the medicine out of his pocket. Kazuko had the grace to look a little surprised but she wasn’t the world best actress and Nino saw through her straight away.
“Oh really? I must have forgotten…” She mumbled wiping her hands on her trousers and walking quickly into the kitchen “Um… Would you like a drink?”
“Yes… But I also want to know why you set that up…” He said following her closely at her heels, putting her medication down on the table. Kazuko flicked on the kettle staring out of the rain splattered window and giving a long tired sigh before answering with
“Jun-kun really wanted to talk to you again… To make it up to you… for what he did…” She turned to look at him again an unapologetic smile on her face. “He said he was cold towards you when he brought you back…You know he was just nervous right? It had been such a long time since he had seen you…”
“Yeah… I guess I didn’t make it easy for him either… I agreed to go for a drink with him later…”
“Really?! That’s wonderful” Kazuko said clapping her hands together like an excited school girl her eyes shining with happiness and once again Nino was filled with suspicion as to what she was playing at
“Mama… Why do you want me and Jun to… Be friends again?” He asked sitting at the table studying her face carefully. Kazuko stopped smiling so happily and quickly turned her attention to the kettle that had started to boil
“Um…Because you were so close as children, you were almost like brothers I know things happen and time changes everything but you should try to be friends once again…”
“But after everything he did to me… He made my life hell…” Nino said angrily as painful flashes of memory came to him invading his mind. School was unbearable enough without the torments of the jocks and ‘popular’ kids. When they found out that he was gay half the time they had refused to allow him into the changing room until they were finished and then they would lock the doors sealing him inside. All the time Jun would be right there with them laughing his head off.
“I know he did…” Kazuko murmured gently stroking his arm and pulling him out of his past “But you know…Kids say stupid things when they’re scared…”
“Scared? You think Jun was scared?” Nino scoffed, regretting that he had been swayed by Jun now. He should have said no and not given him the satisfaction, he shouldn’t have to forgive him, if Jun had really been his friend he wouldn’t have turned on him the way that he had.
“He was only a kid and this isn’t the big city, Kazu when you first told people nobody was sure how to deal with it…” Kazuko mumbled softly and again Nino was irritated.
“I like guys I don’t kill people” He growled getting back to his feet and scraping the chair across the floor loudly.
“Kazunari… You ask us to understand you, but you have to understand us too…The way they acted towards you was wrong, but they were only kids. You were something they didn’t understand and yes you scared him…You were best friends, you did everything together. You were together so much you were practically brothers and then you tell him that you don’t like girls that you like boys… Maybe when you really think about it… Just maybe there was a reason…” Kazuko murmured
“Yeah that he’s a homophobic arsehole…” Nino mumbled but there was little venom in his voice now. Earlier Jun had looked honestly apologetic like he regretted everything that his younger self had done and his subconscious had trusted him enough to agree with going for a drink and at the end of the day that was all it was, a drink they were adults now. “Okay… I guess I can try and forgive him…”
“Good boy…” Kazuko beamed at him before going to finish the tea while Nino let his mind reel he still didn’t have any answer about what she was up to. They had their tea and Nino called Aiba telling him the home number for his mother though it was touch and go if the line worked.
“How are you?” Aiba asked and Nino gave a sigh looking at his mum was buzzing around in kitchen muttering about the weather.
“I’m fine…” He answered, it was a half lie but he didn’t want his manager to keep worrying about him. “Have you heard from him?”
“He’s been around three times… I kept telling him that you’re not here but he doesn’t believe me…”
“I’m sorry, Masa…” Nino mumbled as he heard the irritation in his managers voice
“Don’t be I’m not cross with you, if he comes around again I’ll kick him in the private area… I can’t believe he did that to you!” Aiba said hotly and Nino nodded gripping at the hem of Sakurai’s t-shirt that he was still wearing glad that the line had started to break giving him an excuse to leave. He heard the sound of the old truck and he was able to put a smile onto his face as the doctor came in
