Nino sighed tiredly as he looked around at the fusty dusty looking men in suits that looked just as boring as they were. It was the monthly meet up to discuss the family business and it had already dragged on for an hour and it looked like it was going to be a few more before he could finally leave and do something interesting. Just as that thought was going through his mind the door flew open and his daughter burst inside running like the little tornado she was.
"Masa? Is everything okay?" Nino asked dropping down to his knees and looking at the girl who had a very suspicious looking chocolate beard and a smile on her face. Her eyes were sparkling and her hands were behind her back she hopped from one foot to the other for a minute and then pressed the lightest kiss, like the touch of a butterfly wing, to his cheek and pulled out her hands revealing the strangest most lob sided cake he had ever seen. It looked like the leaning tower of Pisa with sprinkles and jelly babies stuck to its many sides. Nino blinked looked at the cake and then at his daughter who was giving him a gap toothed smile her tongue poking out of the space where her two bottom teeth were meant to be.
"Happy birthday daddy! I made it all on myself...with my easy bake oven...!" She declared loudly and Nino felt a lump forming in his throat and he blinked as his eyes burned with tears that he would not shed. The vest top she was wearing was covered in chocolate stains and multi-coloured spots from the melted jelly babies and it was low on her chest low enough that he could just see the beginnings of her hospital scar.
"You...You did? Aren't you clever...?" He beamed not caring that there were some not subtle at all throat clearings from the stuffy old men. Masako grinned happily nodded her head so quickly that her ponytail bounced around and almost slid free of its tie.
"I really did daddy! I licked the jelly babies to make them sticky!" She told him her arms going around his waist her head resting in his. Nino tried not to pull a face at that statement but it was a close thing and something that he really would have been happy not knowing. "Are you done yet!? It's your birthday, daddy, you shouldn't work on your birthday! We should have a tea-party...with my bears and then we can eat the cake! And then we can play baseball in the garden!"
"Your father is a very busy man, Masako-chan you should go play and not disturb him!" One of the men said sharply and Nino growled when he felt Masako stiffen in his arms. She tried to wriggle free and pull away saying,
"I'm sorry daddy! I should not have disturbeded you...I'll go play with my bears..."
"Masa...you're right I shouldn't be working on my birthday, ne?" Nino asked with a grin rubbing his nose against Masako's until she gave a laugh shaking her head.
"No daddy!" She agreed and Nino chose to ignore the gasp that came from the boring men in suits.
"I think we should have a tea-party and then we'll go play baseball in the park!" He said and Masako cheered loudly jumping up and down her hands clapping together "right you go set the tea set up and I'll show these men out okay?
"Okay daddy!" Masako said giving him the lightest of kisses again before running out of the room. Nino stood up and placed the gooey mess that was his birthday cake down onto the table and smiled at the men.
"Sorry gentleman but it would seem that I have a date with a very beautiful girl..." He said finding their gasps almost amusing "and I don't want to disappoint her so I assume that you can see yourselves out?"
"Ninomiya surely this could wait until later...Masako-chan would understand..."
"I have no doubt she would she would also smile and tell me it was fine but I am never going to be that parent..." Nino said stiffly remembering a promise that he had made to himself the day Masako had pushed her way into the world. "If this waits a day it's not the end of the world if I refuse Masako after she made me a cake it would feel like it was...I'm sorry I will come into the office tomorrow...goodbye..."
"Ninomiya-San this is highly irregular..." They fumbled lightly but Nino shrugged before bowing them all out. As soon as they'd left he grabbed the cake and head to Masako's room. He's little girl was hurrying around placing her teddy bear zoo around a circular table a pretty in pink tea service on the table with fruit cordial replacing tea. Nino grinned strolling forward and placing the cake on the table before sitting on the tiny plastic chair in between a lion and a tiger.
"Ready, daddy?" Masako asked pouring the fruit drink into a cup that had a bright yellow daisy on the front. Nino wasn't sure what he was meant to be ready for but he smiled and nodded as Masako poured herself a drink and then sat down. She held the paw of a panda and a monkey and then motioned for him to do the same with the lion and tiger before she started singing loudly and very off key "happy birthday dear daddy happy birthday to you!"
Nino grinned happily as the last few lines died away and he lifted his cup high into the air and gave her a mock salute before drinking the overly sweet fruit juice down.
"Let's cut the cake!" Masako announced and Nino nodded taking out a penknife from his pocket and cut the cake half. He handed Masako the biggest half and the took the other trying not to think about what might have gone into making it focusing on the work his daughter had done.
"Eat it daddy!" Masako said and slowly Nino brought the cake to his mouth taking a large bite and eating it down as quickly as possible.
"Very nice!" He said swallowing the soggy lump amazed that he didn't gag. Masako grinned with happiness and bit into her half humming happily. Nino rolled his eye eating the rest of the cake deciding that it really was the best cake he'd ever had.
