Sho drove slowly through the streets casting looks at Ohno who was just humming and playing around with his ears. He should have refused to take the Automata, he should have but a combination of Aiba’s pleading face and Ohno’s hopeful one had his resolve crumbling like it had never even existed in the first place and he had agreed. The automata was cute though with his tanned skin and sleepy eyes, he kind of reminded Sho of a porno actor that he had a thing for except with the actor there was no sense of innocence whereas Ohno was full of it.
“Um...Ohno...” He said softly wanting to break the ice but not sure how he did that with a machine. He lacked people skills anyway, most people would accuse him of being robot like, he didn’t care about people’s feelings very often, it’s what made him a good reporter but it was the reason that he had very few friends. Giving into the strange professor and his creation was something that was alien to him. Ohno turned around eagerly with a smile firmly fixed on his lips and the same hopeful glint in his eyes,
“Yes sir, can I help you?” He said in the husky voice that had been used in the factory causing Sho to grip the steering wheel tightly as he asked,
“Um...Is this your first trip out of the factory?”
“Yes sir, but I was only completed a month ago, Aiba-sensei and Nino were very friendly” Ohno answered cheerfully and Sho blinked in surprise remembering the automata with the cat ears he had seemed anything but friendly “I know what you are thinking sir but it was my fault I shouldn’t have said that in front of Nino, he can’t help his programming and Aiba-sensei likes him to get jealous...”
“And... your programming...What does it tell you that you have to do?” Sho asked thinking about the scene that he had seen in the factory, the sad almost lost smile that had been on Aiba’s face as he stroked the arms of the automata. He had researched Aiba Masaki religiously for months and he knew everything about the man, from the early years of his childhood where he had lost his entire family in a gasp explosion to a year ago when he had unveiled Nino at a science show.
The critics had started almost straight away, most people were convinced that the machines weren’t machines at all but just people that had been brainwashed. There were even rumours that Aiba had been harvesting the dead and putting in wires to keep them alive. He had refused to allow anyone to study Nino or any of his other machines but he had allowed to do the study himself. He had worked in a see-through box and had slowly dismantled one of his machines. Sho had been the crowd that day had been struck with how the scientist had cried as he cut into his creation. He had refused to write a report on the man or the Automata’s until he had been able to interview him and hear his side from his own mouth. Of course Aiba had refused any and all interviews seeming to lock himself away in the factory. He had tried several times to get an interview but until last week nothing had been successful. Today he had been confused and disappointed when the scientist had been so cold and clinical right up to the point when Nino was involved, as soon as Nino had been involved his emotions had come through.
“My programing is to do anything and everything that will make you happy sir...” Ohno said cutting into his thoughts and answering the question with his soft and husky voice as he played around with his ears looking like he was grooming them “I do have a few in built programmes that I can choose to do if you will allow me the time...”
“Such as?” Sakurai asked with a raised eyebrow wondering what kind of programming Aiba would place in his machines and he was surprised when Ohno looked embarrassed pulling on his left ear frantically before answering,
“Painting, drawing, singing, dance, sleep and fish...”
“Fish?” Sho asked in surprise though he wasn’t sure why he was so surprised. Fishing was a national pastime after all it would make sense that a Japanese robot would do Japanese things.
“Yes, sir, Aiba and Nino allowed me to pick the programmes that I wanted...” Ohno answered sounding embarrassed again while Sho was surprised at the way he say ‘Aiba and Nino’ like they really were a partnership not just an automata and his creator “When Nino described fishing I thought that it sounded good and fun...Have you ever been fishing before?”
“No...” Sho answered more bluntly than he was intending and the automata fell silent his head hanging for a minute. Sakurai bit his lip gripping the stirring wheel so tightly that it squeaked in protest telling himself that Ohno was just an Automata, Automata didn’t have feelings, so why did it feel like he had hurt those non-existent feelings?
“I’m sorry, I’m busy a lot I rarely have time for doing things like that on my day off I’m normally catching up on sleep...”
“Oh...I like sleeping too, sir” Ohno said brightly his face clearing as a small smile came back “I don’t mind if we just sleep...And of course you can programme me to do whatever you would like me to do...”
“What kind of things?”
“Anything that you would like, sir, I can download and store data on anything that you would like me to do...” Ohno said and Sho blinked in amazement as his brain processed that. The Automata took his silence as misunderstanding though and quickly started to explain “If you told me to build you a car I could...Recite the entire oxford dictionary...The entirety of the internet is in my brain if you asked me to search for something I would process all result and bring you the best answer I could even log into a screen and show you those results...”
“So if I asked you to make a bomb? You would?” Sakurai asked thinking of all the implications that that could cause. Ohno shook his head still smiling as he answered
,
“No...”
“But I could ask you to tell me the details on how to make a bomb...” The reporter pointed out but the Automata shook his head again and gave a shrug that jolted his eyes making them bob up and down like furry wings.
“You could type that into a search engine...But I myself would not tell you, it is a deadlock that is built into all of Aiba-sensei’s creations....I cannot kill or hurt anybody...Nor could I allow a human to come to harm through my actions or as a result of yours which is why I have to tell you that you are going above the speed limit in and are about to run a red light, sir...” He said and Sho slammed his foot onto the brake just in time to stop himself from going through on red and he was thankful that there was nobody behind him. “If you were to ask me to run any search like that I would send a distress call to the factory and then detain you until the police arrived...Aiba-sensei’s Automata’s were designed to help not to kill...”
“What if somebody was able to hack you...?” Sho mused thoughtfully, that was another risk that had been put up by conspiracy theorists but again Ohno shook his head giving another smile,
“They could not sir, my internal programing changes at in fragrant seconds throughout the day, if somebody were able to find the code...The very next second it would have changed...It is impossible to hack Aiba-sensei’s Automata...”
“But who controls the central code?” Sakurai asked having to admit that it did sound almost impossible and Ohno answered simply,
“Nino...”
“If somebody were to hack Nino?” The reporter murmured as they pulled into the parking garage beneath his apartment building and Ohno bit on his lip staring into space before answering
“Nino would burn out his memory core and we would all shutdown...Aiba-sensei thought of all of the safety procedures before he had even finished designing Nino. He designed and built us to help mankind but he wasn’t stupid enough not to realise that there may be some people out there that would want to use us for bad...”
“...” Sho couldn’t find any more questions to ask after that and silently he pulled into his parking space and turned off the engine before turning to the automata and saying stiffly “Then I guess for this month...Welcome home...”
“I’m home sir”
