krystalkatzficz“Is he okay?” Nino asked coming into the room and looking at the boy on the bed. In all honesty he didn’t very well, in fact he looked worse than ever. His breathing was shallow and laboured and his little eyes were screwed up with pain.
“He is very undernourished...His leg, arm and collar bone were broken we have set them but until he starts taking in fluids there is nothing more we can do...He does keep talking about his friends...” Aiba murmured softly and Nino sighed his eyes closing tightly before he gave a nod coming closer to the bed. His heart really had changed, there had been so much pain and death that he couldn’t stand it if he had to watch somebody so young die. “Sho-chan has gone to see if they can find them, maybe if they come the little guy will pull out of it...”
“I hope so...” Nino agreed sitting down on the bed and running his fingers over the little hand. There were so many children in the town though it would be impossible for them to find a certain set of children without any help or much to go on. The only real hope they had was that the children would have heard what had happened and would then come and find out what was going on but if they were as young as this boy then there was only a slim chance of that happening.
“Mama...” Satoru said softly from the doorway and Nino smiled turning to look at his son who was hovering by the door with a curious expression on his face. “Is the boy okay?”
“He is still very poorly, Toru...” Nino answered beckoning him over and the boy ran and quickly came running landing on his lap and Nino held him tightly as the boy chewed on his lip.
“When he gets better is he coming to live with us?” Satoru asked his head resting against Nino’s shoulder and Nino chewed on his lip. He really didn’t know. He had spoken to his lord about it and Nino hadn’t been surprised that Ohno had agreed to let him take the boy home with them. But if there were others then not even the large castle he and his lord shared would be enough to house them. He chewed on the inside of his cheek for a minute staring thoughtfully at the wall, there were other houses that would be able to take in more children though.
“Hmm...If he would like that...” he answered and Satoru gave a gasp his eyes wide as he looked at him like he was trying to work out how anybody wouldn’t like it.
“He would, he would get you and papa and nee-chan and Nii-chan...” He cried happily wiggling around on his lap and Nino laughed using his free hand to steady him while kissing the top of his head,
“And he would also have you but we will have to see when he wakes up ne...”
“But he would get to live in a castle! And have horses! And I would even share my toy horses with him!” Satoru said excitedly seemingly not wanting to listen to any other option “I would be a big brother then ne?”
“Yes if he did come to live with us you would be his big brother...” Nino smiled kissing him again before looking up at Aiba who was grinning so wide his mouth must be aching.
“Un...Huhn...” The boy on the bed moaned lightly Nino jolted looking down as the boy’s eyes flicked open. He blinked for a minute and then gave a scream struggling weakly as he tried to move over the bed. He was more frightened than Nino had ever seen a boy and terrified that he was going to hurt himself further he dropped Satoru off of his knee and held him as gently as he could. The boy was even thinner than he had remembered, his hand could wrap around his arm and it was more than obvious that he was too young to even be speaking properly yet. If he had mentioned anything about friends it was because that was the only word that he knew.
“Hey...Be careful...” He murmured lightly doing his best to smile gently “Nobody is going to hurt you...My name is Nino...And this is my son, Satoru...”
“Nino-mama saved you...Nino-mama is the best!” Satoru said brightly throwing his arm around Nino’s waist and resting his head on his shoulder.
“Ma-ma...Mam-a?” The boy whispered slowly his head tilting to one side like a curious kitten his eyes blowing wide before tears formed and his lip trembled. “Mama!” he sobbed and, even though he was going to be in great pain, he threw his arms around Nino’s neck and held him tightly. Nino was stunned for a minute and then very carefully hugged the boy cradling his head guessing he really did have another son there was no way he was going to leave him now.
“Make him well, Masaki please...” Nino asked looking up at his friend who gave a nod and they were all surprised when the door opened and Sakurai came in with three more children two twin girls that were about 5 or 6 and a boy who looked about a year older than the one in his arms. They all looked as close to death as they could be, the girl’s faces were just skin stretched over bone and the sacks they were wearing looked like they were about fall from their skeletal frames. Nino heard Aiba make a pained sound in his throat and he saw his friend move. Nino had known since they had lived in the Garden that his friend had wanted a little girl, somebody that he could dress up and treat like a princess. Hotaru would have fit the bill but his friend had been too damaged then to take care of her but now his own paternal instincts were kicking in.
“Lordship! Don’t ‘urt ‘im he’s just a baby...See...We was hungry...He didn’t know...I’m sorry...Lordship...” One of the twins said with a very heavy lisp her eyes wide as she and her sister fell to their knees tugging the boy down with them.
“Mama-Nino would never hurt him! He is coming to live with us! I am going to be his big brother!” Satoru declared boldly his hands going to his hips and Nino carefully laid the once again sleeping boy down on the bed and rose to his feet as the two girls looked at each other.
“You will take him, sir? And give him an home?” They asked hope in their eyes and Nino slowly nodded watching as smiled formed a surprisingly rose bud like mouths before it dropped away “Will you make him a servant?”
“No...Like my son says, he will have a place in our family...”
“Will you take him as well sir...?” The second girl asked tugging on the boy beside her arm, her voice clearer but softer than her sisters and Nino could tell that she was the most hesitant “He...He is a good boy too sir...He deserves a home...”
“He does...But unfortunately I already have two other children...” Nino said his heart twisting and turning at the sad look that crossed over the twin faces and he quickly added “But I have a friend...She recently lost her son...I think she would be very happy if she could take in...”
“Yuu...Sir...” The girl with the lisp whispered slowly tears in her eyes as she touched the boys head.
“And this boy?” Nino said looking down at the figure on the bed who gave another whimper his tiny hand grabbing a hold of Nino’s squeezing it tightly.
“He ain’t got no name, sir, he just started to live with us...” The girl with the lisp answered while her sister gave a hum.
“Um...Sir, can we visit them sometimes...Um...” She asked softly and with a pang of regret Nino shook his head,
“I am sorry we live far away from the town, in my lord’s village...”
“Oh I see my lord...”
“You can live with us!” Aiba cried out suddenly and both of the girls gave gasps and huddled closer to each other for safety. “Eh? No I did not mean...My lover, Monkey is the healer in the village...” The former consort said motioning to Sakurai who was watching with surprise from his spot by the doorway “And well I have always wanted a daughter...But two would be amazing...”
“You wants us to be yer daughter’s sir?” The girl with lisp asked warily and Aiba nodded slowly. Just asking was a huge feat for Aiba who was still struggling with confidence due to the marks on his face that would never fully heal. Nino looked at the girls who were whispering softly to each other their faces pale before they turned with nervous expressions in their eyes. “Um...Will you teach us how to heal? We tried to make them better but...They just seemed to get sicker...We tried really hard, sir, if we come back and knows how to do it we can help people...”
“I agree! We can teach you! Ne Monkey?” Aiba gasped and Nino chuckled his eyes going back to the boy on the bed.
“Come on little guy pull through, okay?”
