Nino yawned noisily as he came down the stairs. His mother was already awake because he could smell the thick smoke from the fire as she cooked his favourite foods for his birthday breakfast. Happily he ran from the stairs and into the kitchen grinning when he saw his papa was also there. There had been some doubt if he would be home for his birthday this year because the emperor had requested to see him so Nino felt like crying with happiness that he was there for his special day. He couldn’t cry though because he was a man so he just smiled shouting

“Papa!” until his father put Jun down onto the floor and came over to him casting a deep dark shadow over him.

“My son...” His father said lifting him up and giving him a bone crushing hug that threatened to steal the air from his lungs. Nino didn’t mind it though giving a giggle as he wrapped his arms around his thick neck. His father as the idol of his life the scars on his body were marks of how brave he was. He sat and told him stories in front of the fire that he received them for saving the most beautiful woman in the land. A look had been shared between his parents and Nino had frowned not understanding it and had simply asked what he’d done when he’d rescued her. His father had laughed and ruffled his hair saying ‘I asked her to share my life with me...And she consented...’ He had understood then that he had been talking about his mama. His mama was beautiful small with a playful smile...People said that he looked like his mama and said that one day he would be beautiful like she was. He pouted each and every time those words left somebodies lips. He didn’t want to be beautiful like a girl he wanted to be strong like his papa...Though his father had chuckled when he said that he also wanted to marry somebody like papa. “You are growing into a man already my son...Your birthday is upon us...”

“Yes...Papa...” Nino grinned pulling out of the hug and looking into the scarred face his tiny hand moving over the scar on his eye. His father smiled at the action nuzzled his face against the hand asking
“Have you decided yet what you wish for?”

“I got it already papa...You came back!” Nino laughed and his father looked shocked for a moment and then a smile formed on his lips.

“I told the emperor that I had to return, that it was my oldest child’s special day and I would not sharing it even for him...”

“You said that to the emperor?!” Nino hissed his mouth dropping comically wide and his eyes growing like wide disks in his face. His father gave a laugh and a nod spinning him around

“I did...I would not miss this for anything, my son, yours or Jun’s birthdays...” He answered while Nino giggled and laughed keeping his eyes closed to feel more of the spinning sensation.

“What did the emperor say!?”

“He said ‘of course you must leave it is not every day that your son turns five’ He has children and grandchildren of his own of course he would understand...He even thought to give you a gift to mark the day...” His father told him pulling out a parcel wrapped in silk cloth. The cloth was light blue with flowers and beautifully coloured dragons on it. Nino was in awe of just the cloth and wondered if he could keep that two. His mama would be able to use it to make her clothes pretty. “Here you go...”

Slowly Nino reached out for the cloth and felt something hard buried inside of it with almost shaking hands he slowly he opened up the fabric to reveal two wooden samurai figures complete with carved katana.

“They are beautiful, papa it looks like you!” He cried holding up one of the wooden figures and his father laughed ruffling his hair again.

“Indeed it does...” He said and Nino chewed his lip looking at his brother who was eying the toys with just a touch of jealousy in his face and slowly he turned back to his father

“Papa...Would the emperor mind if I gave one to Jun?”  He asked “Because I do not need two and it would be fun if we could play together!”

“Then that is what you should do” His mother said with a proud fond smile on her face and Nino looked at his father to make sure. The man gave a nod looking just as proud of him and Nino was pleased that he had made his dad proud. Quickly he got up and carried the figures to his brother who was grinning toothlessly at him.

“I am keeping the one that looks like papa but you can have this one” He said handing the second figure to Jun and the boy laughed waving it in the air

“Ank-You...” Jun said and Nino nodded turning back to his father and flashing him a smile.

“Tomorrow you should write a thank-you note to the emperor to tell him that you liked his gift...”

“I will papa...” Nino nodded earnestly hugging the wooden toy to his chest thinking that his papa must be very close to the emperor so that he would send his son a gift. “I will write my words like you showed me....”

“Good boy, now then...What can your mama and I do for your special day?”

“Um...I want to go with papa! Into town...You said I could when I was bigger!” Nino said in a rush knowing that he was asking for a big thing, his father would go into the town every three months to trade but they were never allowed to go...His mother never ventured further than the small market that was in the neighbours field once a month.

“Indeed I did say that, and as it is your birthday Kazunari you shall ride with me into town...” His father said and Nino felt like the most important boy in the room “We shall go today...”

“Me go as well?” Jun asked still playing with the doll Nino rounded on him puffing out his chest and saying importantly

“You cannot...You are not a big boy yet...Can he papa?”

“No not yet...Besides your mama will be wanting help around the house...” His father agreed and Nino puffed with more pride. Today on his birthday he would be spending time with his father.

“Will you go to the temple?” His mother asked softly and his father nodded his hands resting on Nino’s shoulders as he said,

“I will visit”

Nino wasn’t sure what they meant by that, he knew that his mother would ask that question whenever he went into town and the answer was always the same. Today he might be able to find out why he wasn’t really bothered though as long as he got to spend the time with his father. He ate his breakfast quickly and then hurried to get ready while his mum picked up the slightly sobbing Jun rocking him to her chest her cheek resting on the top of his head.

“Are you ready my son?” His father called from outside and Nino hurried out after hurriedly pressing a kiss to his mother’s cheek. His father was standing beside the magnificent brown and white horse named Apple Blossom, it wasn’t a warriors name but the story went that Apple Blossom was Nino’s first word to his father and the foal had been named after that. His father helped him up and he clung tightly to the reins of the horse while he jumped up behind him holding him close so that he didn’t fall off.

The ride to town took a long time but Nino didn’t feel bored he just nestled back against his father and listened to him talking about the different plants and foods that were growing. Nino knew that he could listen to his father all day and never get tired of it. There was nobody in the world as amazing as his father.
The time spent in the town itself was almost unnerving and he clung to his father glaring when people called him a beautiful little girl. The Sakurai temple was a large building coated with white walls and had a black roof. There were lots of children there and his father explained that they were the children of the gods and Nino made him laugh by saying that the gods must be very poor with having so many babies to look after and then he quietly explained that they were children without a mother or a father. Nino pressed himself as close to his father as he could after that he couldn’t imagine what it was like not to have a mother or a father and he didn’t want to.

“Promise that you will never leave me...” He said after they had left the temple and his father hugged him tightly his hand moving over the top of his head.

“You, Jun and your mama are the greatest treasures I have Kazunari...And if there is a time that I cannot be with you physically you have to know that I am always with you...” He said and Nino gulped nodding even though he didn’t understand what that meant. His father treated him to sweet dumplings after that and then took him around the various shops. They bought the supplies for the farm and then his father brought some pretty cloths for his mother to match the silk cover from his birthday present. When Nino grew tired he picked him up holding him on his hip and Nino breathed in his scent hugging him around his neck.
He would never remember the trip home from town he was asleep even before he had been placed on the horse and the jolting didn’t wake him he remembered his father carrying him back into the house and the amazing smell of the foods that his mother had cooked for him. She was sat with Jun on her knee rocking him gently as she sang the song of the nightingale, as she sang Nino crawled out his father’s arms and went to sit on her other lap holding his brothers and listening to the song surprised when their father settled behind her and joined in the last verse.

*~*~*~*

“I am sorry...I would speak more of mama but...I idolised papa...” Nino whispered as he ended the story a lump so big in his throat that he feared that it would stop his breathing. Tears were in his eyes and quickly he tried to hide them. “If you wish to truly know what kind of man father was, you only have to look at our lord... He is much the same...” Nino said his eyes going to the scene by the pond where Ohno had picked up Satoru and was holding him against his hip while the body was fighting a losing battle to stay awake. Jun grinned his hand closing over his, their fingers linking

“And I believe you are much like mother...”

“Father would tell me so...And others...I admit that at the time I took it more of an insult but now I truly hope that that is the case...” He smiled giving his brother’s hand a squeeze.

“I remember the song of the nightingale...When I was little in the cave...Before I went to sleep I heard it...’Hush, my baby...The nightingale calls...”

“Over the mountain over the trees the wind whispers on her wings...No sorrow can find you, no demons come near, listen only to the nightingale and hear her sweet call’...” Nino whispered with a laugh “Mother made it up...She would sing it whenever we were scared or frightened...You were always her baby, you were always by her side while I would always follow papa...”

“Did you really tell him that you would marry a man like him?” Jun asked with a laugh and Nino nodded seriously biting on his lip his eyes going again to his lover, who seemed to be purposely staying away  to give them time to talk.

“I did...I think even then I knew that...I enjoyed the company of men...”

“What did he say?”

“If that is your path in life son, then I will be glad for you...He would have approved of my lord...” Nino answered with certainty “As would have mama...Even with all that happened...”

“...Thank-you for telling me...”

“It was not much...”

“It was more than I had...One day will you write down the Nightingale song...I would like to be able to sing it to my children...” Jun said his cheeks flushing a little and Nino laughed nodding as he told him,

“There is much I do not remember...”

“Then make up the words missing...I think that would be good as well...”

“I will do my best, Jun...I promise...”
