“I hate vampires!” A thin pale looking boy snapped angrily dropping a scrubbing brush down into a pail and folding his arms across his thin chest clearly irritated by the work that he was doing.
“Careful Nino…” Another taller boy said softly wiping the sweat from his face with the back of his hand.
“What? Is there anything else they can do to me that’s worse than this?” Nino asked motioning to the carpet that he had been scrubbing. Of course he knew that there were a few things that their Vampire lords could do them that was worse than being clean-up crew, like the ‘livestock’ but he was angry and fed-up.
The vampires had taken over 100 years ago after the first Great War when men were weak and outnumbered. It hadn’t been a blood thirsty take over but more like a political one and now the eight vampire royal families ruled the entire world and kept piece. Nino and his friend Aiba worked for the Japanese royal family and tonight was a special event the crown prince Matsumoto Jun had come into his adolescence and tonight was the first of many parties that was going to insure that he found his soul mate. Vampire nobility were coming from far and wide in the hopes that their off spring would be the one. Only the royalty had soul mates and there was no honour greater than being the submissive mate of a vampire princeling. Or at least it was for other vampires. Nino found the whole thing barbaric and he shuddered at the thought of being paired off like that against his will.
He hadn’t met the prince directly, the palace was too big for even a chance meeting, but from the pictures that he had seen ‘Jun’ was a very attractive man and he wondered what he thought about it all. But then again, he was just as much as a monster as the rest of them so it probably made a whole lot of sense to him.
“You know there is…Get back to work so we can finish and get back into our rooms before those English vampires come…They’re always so grabby!” Aiba pouted and Nino rolled his eyes taking up the scrubbing brush again wincing when pain stabbed at his bruised and cut up hands.
The two friends worked in silence for another hour, scrubbing the floor and polishing wooden spindles of the grand staircase, which seemed to be as big as a two story house, until they shone and then they walked to the into the kitchen sagging heavily into the chairs.
“’Ere eat that and then make yerselves scarce…” The matronly cook said slamming two bowls of greyish steam rice gruel and a spoon. Nino pulled his nose up, his mouth twisting into a grimace, but he took up the spoon and started eating quickly.
He took a breath looking at his reflection again watching as his mother almost floated into the room her pink and purple dress rippling around out around her as a smile lit up her beautiful face. People said that they looked alike and Jun had to agree that they did.
“Look at you! All grown up and looking every bit the man…Are you excited about finding your mate?” She asked stroking his face before kissing his forehead.
“No, not really, no” He answered biting on his lip. Ari frowned taking a step back still holding his hand tightly.
“Why not, it is the happiest day of your life…” She asked and Jun shook his head giving a shrug
“Not if I end up being mated to one of those painted dolls that father keeps slamming in front of my face…”
“Oh dear…You know that won’t happen right?” Ari sighed sitting down on the bed and patting the space next to her. Without a grumble Jun went to her side sighing with happiness when she wrapped her arms around him tightly the bond between parent and child would remain strong until the moment Jun found his soul mate and then, as he was a dominant, it would fizzle out into nothing leaving the space in his heart only for his mate. “Your mate will be perfect for you…In every way…Have no fear about that…”
“But…”
“Relax, it is rare for you to find your mate straight away anyway, your father is just using this as a way of showing off that you’re a man now…So come down and have some fun, ignore all the brainless painted dolls if you wish but I promise that if you really dislike them so much then there would be very little chance of them being your soul mate…”
“Promise…?” Jun asked uncertainty dripping with each word and he was glad when his mother smiled flashing her brilliantly white teeth
“I promise now come and have a dance with me…” She said getting up and tugging at his hand. Reluctantly he allowed himself to be pulled up and out of his room. Taking his mother’s arm he led her down the magnificent gleaming staircase and then out into the main ballroom. It was crammed full of people but everything stayed silent as they entered even the music was killed. Jun was tempted to lick his lips with nerves but instead he settled for giving a polite nod. The Queen on the other hand preened rubbing her cheek against his shoulder. “Here he is my son the birthday boy…”
The room exploded with sound as the crowd all saying happy birthday and Jun gave a groan.
*~*~*~*~*The party must have been in full swing when Nino slipped out of his and Aiba’s room that night and crept down into the kitchens. The cook almost always left them some treats out, more so after they had been given just gruel and with the party there was bound to be some tasty treats left behind as long as he wasn’t discovered only he, Aiba and the cook would ever know. The secondary kitchens were in darkness when Nino slipped through the door moaning happily when he saw that there was a pile of food on the table.
He darted forward and grabbed it in his hands holding it close to his chest his heart thumping painfully when he turned around and saw the crown prince staring at him, his handsome face wild his sharp canine teeth exposed glinting in the dim light
“…Um…I…Your highness…” He whispered his whole body shaking terrified that Jun was going to punish him for stealing food.
“You…Who are you…?” The prince rasped loudly sniffing the air and Nino flinched back dropping the stash that he was holding to the floor with a thunk.
“I…Um…Nino…Sire…I… I’m clean-up…”He whispered quickly holding up his arm and showing him his tattoo that showed his station fearful of the almost blood red look that was in the prince’s eyes. “Um…I…Shit…” his voice faulted as the vampire prince cleared the room in three strides grabbing him tightly by the arms and squeezing tightly his nose pressed into his neck
“…You…You’re mine... You belong to me…” Jun growled his tongue and lips pressing against his jugular. He heartbeat races and the vampire gave a feral growl his grip tightening.
“What…Huh…Who…?” Nino stammered positive his heart was about to give in due to the fear as he tried to understand what was happening.
“My mate…You are my mate…” Jun said his voice still wild as his mouth worked at his neck sucking and nipping and Nino was horrified to find out his was actually enjoying the sensations that were running through his body though he was more horrified by what was being said.

The Japanese crown vampire prince was staring grumpily into the mirror tugging at his lapels. He had only recently come into his pure blood inheritance and he couldn’t believe that his parents had already decided that he was going to find his mate so quickly. Of course it was an honour to find your other half but the thought that it was going to be the painted powdered gentry that were always simpering all over him it sent a wicked shiver over his body and a horrible sick feeling came into his stomach refusing to leave.
