black magic part 32
THREE MONTHS LATER
“You okay? You gonna puke?” Nino asked from where he was bouncing up and down with all the energy of an over-sprung cricket. Masaki glared at the older man trying to settle his nerves as a cheer went up from the crowd beyond the curtain. Three months of frantic practice, recording, and just plain having the time of his life and now they were ready to play their first show of Black Magic’s comeback tour. They were of course at Arashi for this but that didn’t stop him from wanting to puke when he realised that the club was filled to capacity. Black Magic’s reunion had swept through the country like wildfire and somehow Masaki had been thrust into the spot light. Sho had set up a webpage along with all kinds of social media accounts getting fans back into the music and getting new ones. It was a surreal experience, but he didn’t think that he would change it. “You’re gonna be fine, once you get up there, they are gonna love you”
“I’m not Jun! The fans are going to hate me!”
“Let them hate you, but they will be the minority. You are better than Jun was…Just breathe…”
“I can’t breathe, if I breathe, I’ll for sure be sick” Masaki whimpered as a roar went up from the crowd telling them that the starting band had just finished and that they would be next. “I’m gonna make a mistake…”
“Then you make a mistake, honestly, you think we never make mistakes? We do, a lot of them, but you know what? When we make mistakes you’ve got four other people to back you up. When you’re on the stage you focus on one point in the crowd and I promise you everything else will fall away” Nino stopped jumping to give him a reassuring smile before he jumped again as Black Magic was being chanted from the crowd. “I made sure that Mama would be in your sightline, just play for him…come on guys!”
“Coming captain! My captain” Tada and Ryo laughed while Kame fixed his hair in the long mirror before following Nino out from the back part of the stage while the young band came back in. They were looking absolutely thrilled that they had played their first gig and Masaki couldn’t help but give them high fives sucking in some confidence.

“I stumble through the wreckage, rusted from the rain” Nino sang as the first strings of music played and Masaki struggled to stay focused as the crowd roared into life. Screams filled the club area and already Masaki could see a surge starting as those from the back moved forward to crush those at the front. Nino jerked his head at the security guards but stayed focused singing
“There's nothing left to salvage, no one left to blame. Among the broken mirrors, I don't look the same. I'm rusted from the rain, I'm rusted from the rain. Dissect me 'till my blood runs down into the drain. My bitter heart is pumping oil into my veins. I'm nothing but a tin man, don't feel any pain. I don't feel any pain, I'm rusted from the rain” Masaki looked into the crowd and sure enough he saw Sho the most clearly standing in front of the metal bars that separated the stage from the crowd. Security had already started moving pushing everyone back to stop a crush and some how seeing the older man looking up at him with a smile he felt a ping of happiness. He didn’t know exactly what was going on between them but he had a good idea that Sho liked him and he knew he liked Sho.
“Go on, crush me like a flower, rusted from the rain. Come on strip me of my powers, beat me with your chains. And if I'm the King of cowards, you're the Queen of pain. I'm rusted from the rain, I'm rusted from the rain” Ryo, Kame, Masaki sang along with Nino and Masaki was amazed that he had gotten the timing right while he continued to play bass.
“You hung me like a picture, now I'm just a frame. I used to be a lap dog, now I'm just a stray. Shackled in a graveyard, left here to decay. Left here to decay, left here to decay. I'm rusted from the rain."
“Go on, crush me like a flower, rusted from the rain. Come on strip me of my powers, beat me with your chains. And if I'm the King of cowards, you're the Queen of pain. I'm rusted from the rain, I'm rusted from the rain. Go on, crush me like a flower, rusted from the rain. Come on strip me of my powers, beat me with your chains. And if I'm the King of cowards, you're the Queen of pain. I'm rusted from the rain, I'm rusted from the rain”
The first song of the show came to an end and Masaki realised that like Nino had promised his nerves had all but vanished. The last note died, and Nino grinned in a coy way lifting his microphone and screaming
“Hello Arashi! How are you doing tonight? It’s been a while, huh? Sorry, for that…But…We’re back! And with only one minor change…Make some noise for our new and improved bass-player, Aiba Masaki, who is the only reason we are here again at all” Masaki flinched as a louder roar rose from the crowd and they began chanting his name. Masaki wasn’t completely sure what had happened to Nino three months ago but he did know that the man had been going to therapy once a week and no longer looked out at the world as though it was out to get him. He had also started to speak more about the abuse he had suffered and had decided to set up a Black Magic charity for victims of abuse.
It made him respect the bratty lead singer more than ever and having him praising him up on stage was something that made him want to faint but he grinned awkwardly looking out into the crowd and seeing Sho. The producer slash manager gave him a wink and Masaki was very glad when they moved into a new song “Okay, you know this one! I want you to sing along…Devil in a midnight mass…” The music started up and once again Masaki felt his confidence lift as Nino started singing “A devil in a midnight mass. He prayed behind stained glass. A memory of Sunday class. Resurrected from the past. Hold your breath and count to four…” He held his microphone up and the crowd screamed along jumping and bobbing. “Pinky swears don't work no more. Footsteps down the hallway floor. Getting closer to my door. I was alive but now I'm singing…Silent night for the rest of my life. Silent night for the rest of my life. Silent night at the edge of your knife”

“Forgive me father”
“Won't make it right…Silent night for the rest of my life. Silent night at the edge of your knife…”
“You're guilty!”
“A devil in a midnight mass. Killed the boy inside the man. The holy water in his hands. Can never wash away his sins. Hold your breath and count to four. Pinky swears don't work no more. Put my trust in god that day. Not the man that taught his way…I was alive but now I’m singing…”
