Alpha Ohno Satoshi was the furthest thing from a morning person that there was, even copious amounts of coffee couldn’t wake him up, and yet somehow, he always ended up on the morning shift. He was a paramedic. Normally it wasn’t the type of job an alpha would do, Alpha’s were not a calming presence around an injured person, but he was on a great number of suppressants which made him smell and behave more like a beta and he was fine with that. He had never had dreams of forming his own pack, he just wanted to get on with his life. He pulled on his uniform and stared blurry eyed into the full-length mirror on his door. He wasn’t much of an alpha to look at anyway so being a beta fit him at least in his opinion.
Deciding that he was fit for the day he rubbed his eyes and left his apartment smiling very weakly at old Mrs Kotou who was walking her dog on the balcony opposite. The woman was his landlord and was rather nice, but she had a bee in her bonnet about setting him up with her grandson, a nice beta that was just graduating from college. Satoshi shuddered at the idea, if there was anything, he wanted less than a pack it was a mate. Glad that she was on the other balcony so he wouldn’t have to speak to her he almost took off at a run making it down the three flights of stairs before he made it out of the complex.
The sun wasn’t even up yet he noted with distaste glaring up at the sky as he pulled his hand through his hair and then rubbed his eyes again. The small ambulance was already parked up at the end of the path his partner waiting with his back to the door drinking his regular soymilk concoction.
“Well good morning Sunshine” Yamashita ‘Yamapi’ Tomohisa said in a cheerful voice holding out a travel mug of coffee as he walked out of his building to the ambulance that was parked out front. Yamapi wasn’t anymore of a morning person than he was but he was better at pretending and always made sure to get into work first and fetch the ambulance.
“Shut up” Satoshi growled without any heat in his voice he and Yamapi had been partners for almost five years and they knew each other better than he would have liked to know another person. He knew that Pi had mated straight out of school to another Beta male Kamenashi Kazuya. That they wanted children but hadn’t gotten around to it yet and as they were both beta neither could carry the pup, so the only hope was adoption, but it was rare that pups were adopted away from packs. He pushed the useless information away and climbed into the passenger seat his head resting against the window as he drank his coffee. The warmth spread through his fingertips and over his lips and he finally managed to shake himself and mutter “Good morning”
“Alive at last? What do you do every night that makes you so tired?”
“Sleep” Satoshi answered with a roll of the shoulders keeping his eyes closed as Pi climbed in beside him and started the engine. The ambulance was a new model, one of the few, and it came to life easily under Pi’s touch. “What the hell do you do?”
“Well…Now? Mostly fight for the covers, Kame is a friggin cover hog”
“You say that with too much happiness” Satoshi sighed glad that he didn’t have to share his covers with anyone. He liked a warm cover nest. It was why he had splurged for a king sized quilt when he only had a single bed. “You should get a bigger cover”
“Nah, that would be no fun, besides, it’s cute when he wraps himself up like a burrito” Pi grinned and Satoshi had the sinking feeling he would be subjected to numerous photos of said Kame burrito the first time he got. Thankfully that wouldn’t be soon as a call came through as soon as they pulled onto the main road.
“Ambulance Six Seven, you there?”
“This is Ambulance Six Seven” Satoshi said answering the radio which crackled for a moment before an address was rattled off along with basic details. A woman in her early 70s had fallen down a flight of stairs, suspected broken hip.
It was easy for Satoshi to wake up when they had a patient to think about and for the next four hours, he did just that. They barely got time for a drink in between calls. The sun was up when they finally stopped outside their regular café and ordered breakfast and had their travel mugs filled up. His back-popping Satoshi stretched while waiting for his regular order. The beta behind the counter was always friendly to emergency staff giving them discounts and extras to their orders. They repaid him by staying regulars even in their off times.
“Oh, yeah, Kame was saying that he met this really great Gamma while he was working…”
“Not interested” Satoshi said flatly almost growling and he checked his watch knowing it was time for him to take his next dose of suppressants.
“Hey, come on man, you don’t even know anything about her”
“I don’t need to know I’m not interested” Satoshi said taking his pill case from his pocket and popping the tiny green pills down his throat. Pi frowned at the action, but Satoshi ignored him Pi knew that he was an alpha but neither of them talked about it. “Thanks for the offer but I’m seriously not interested in dating”
“So, what are you into? You one of those where only an omega will do?”
“Nope” Satoshi answered though honestly if he had the option of a male omega then maybe he might be interested but they were rare and mostly kept back in their packs. Male omega had come about around a thousand years ago when there had been an abundance of fertile males but no women. For a while some of the stricter religions had hated them, calling them an abomination but that had ended in the 1700’s. There had been discrimination against them for years, but it was on the same level as women and that had ended with the reformation of women and omega rights in 1924. “I’m not interested in dating…”
“Car six seven, come in six seven…”
“Six seven responding, go ahead control” Satoshi said thoughts of his breakfast fading as the radio buzzed into life.
“Central bus station, suspected heart attack…” Control informed them both down the speaker and Yampi grabbed their order from the beta who gave them a thumbs up before they climbed back into the ambulance.
“On our way control” Satoshi responded, and Pi switched on the alarm and lights. Control gave them a few more details but there was nothing that could prepare him for the sight that might them when they arrived.
An old alpha was laid out on the floor beside a bus, there was a rucksack under his head his skin was clammy. A fragile looking boy was stood next to him his face marked with bruises his lips bloody as his eyes were puffy and wet. A sweet scent of the ocean washed out from him, tinged with pain, blood, and fear.
He was clinging to the old alpha’s hand while his entire body was shaking, Satoshi knew immediately he was a male omega, a male omega that had been beaten badly and was absolutely terrified. If he didn’t get a handle on the situation soon it was going to be a lot worse.

“Hey, Angel, it’s okay, we’re gonna take good care of your alpha, okay?” He promised in a softer tone than he had ever used before and he could see Pi’s shocked and slightly amused expression. “But for us to do that I need you to go with my partner, alright Angel?”
