Genre: romance, Christmas, fluff
Sakurai Sho sniffed his coffee before sipping it taking in the bitterness of the slightly perfumed aroma before taking a sip and allowing it to settle on his tongue. The coffee with its better aftertaste was as soothing for his senses as it always was and he let out a languid happy sigh enjoying the quiet solitude the small cafe offered to him. It was a small insignificant sort of place he had found by chance one rainy night a year ago. So often he came here now after work that it if was almost ritual for him to sit in the secluded spot at the back of the cafe and observe the customers that came. Many like him were regulars but none more so than the beautiful man who sat at the table across from him. Sho suspected, no matter how good the coffee was, that it was the chance to look at the man more than the taste of the coffee that brought him back night after night.
He had always been a great admirer of beautiful things, his office was filled with paintings of natural beauty all painted by the same hand, and the man with bee stung lips, soft dyed hair and almost perfectly shaped almond eyes set in a oval face, was his very definition of beautiful. He had never seen a man quite so beautiful before and for exactly four nights he had mistaken him for a woman until he had spoken. His voice was low and husky almost as though he was out of breath but it had a gay lilt that was as beautiful to him as the man himself. They had never spoken not even in passing but Sho knew that the man stared at him almost as often as he did.
“Masaki, why do you come here day after day?” The owner of the cafe asked with a sort of exasperated fondness addressing the man Sho had been thinking about and Masaki gave a smile rubbing the very tips of his ears for a moment before answering;
“Because Jun-kun works every night! I want to keep you company”
“Masaki, I’m fine” Jun muttered his cheeks growing red and his entire body tightening before Masaki laughed and shrugged;
“I know, but I like to be here anyway”
“Well if you are going to sit there every night, you could order more than the hot chocolate you know” Jun said with another fond smile before coming over to the table Sho was sitting at. “Can I get you anything else?”
“A slice of the apple tart, please” Sho answered breaking with his ritual. He never normally had anything but his coffee and never anything as sweet as a tart this late at night but he didn’t want to be accused of just having his coffee like Masaki had just been. Jun lifted a surprised eyebrow but nodded going back to his counter with a soft;
“Very well”
“You’re a lawyer ne?” Masaki asked from his table seemingly deciding that the ritual would be disturbed then he might as well talk and Sho’s fingers went to the pin that was attached to his lapel. “I could never be a lawyer, is it a hard job?”
“It is challenging” Sho answered as Jun came back with his apple tart and a fork for him to eat it with. “Thank-you”
“I hope you enjoy, Masaki, don’t bother my customers” Jun growled with a scary scowl in Masaki’s direction and Sho wanted to say that it was fine, that he had been wanting to find a way of talking to him but hadn’t been able to. He had never been one to start conversations more so with handsome men in cafes as he had never liked to even admit to himself that he was gay before. “I apologise for Masaki, he is always overly familiar”
“It’s quite alright” Sho smiled taking some of the tart into his mouth. It, like the coffee, wasn’t overly sweet and he found that it settled rather nicely on the tip of his tongue. “This...Was it made here?”
“All of Jun-kun’s food is cooked by hand” Masaki said cheerfully ignoring Jun’s earlier words as he came from his regular table and came to join him at his. “Aiba Masaki!”
“Hnn?”
“It’s my name, Aiba Masaki, nice to meet you” Masaki said bobbing up and down in a bow but staying seated.
“I’m in your care” Sho replied with a bob of his own “Sakurai Sho”
“Nice to meet you” Masaki said again with a smile that seemed to light up his entire face. “You must like coming here, I see you almost every night!”
“Yes, it is a great cafe, I see you often too” Sho said forcing himself to keep the conversation going and Masaki nodded relaxing in his chair as he jerked his head at Jun who was cleaning the counter down.
“Jun is my brother-in-law, he was married to my sister”
“I see, they divorced?”
“No, nee-chan passed away last year” Masaki answered and Sho could barely believe it. He hadn’t though Jun old enough to own a cafe much less be a widower. “Sorry! I didn’t mean...Ugh! I’m bad at this!”
“This?”
“Talking to handsome men! If my friend Nino was here, he would know what to say! Wanna go for a coffee sometime...Um...Maybe not a coffee...Sorry! I don’t even...Urgh...I’m gonna...” Masaki flushed scarlet getting up from the chair and against all reason Sho found himself saying;
“A drink sounds nice”
