“Hai! It’s Masaki!” Aiba Masaki said in a bright voice answering the phone that had been buzzing while he finished his paperwork for the night. His desk was still overflowing, he had never been one for paperwork even when he had been at school and that hadn’t changed since he had become a social worker unfortunately a lot of work came with it more so as he was one of the few that worked happily with the Animal-Human hybrids. There weren’t many of them left in the world, not since the great war and those that were alive were closely monitored by the government. Masaki was one of those that dealt with the Hybrids. A muffled sobbing sound on the other end caused him to focus a little more flipping the file closed. “Hello?”

“Hai! It’s Masaki!” Aiba Masaki said in a bright voice answering the phone that had been buzzing while he finished his paperwork for the night. “Um, Aiba Masaki-can? My name is Umeda, I’m a nurse at Kumera hospital” A male voice came down the line and Masaki felt himself stiffening. Kumera hospital was the only hospital in Tokyo that treated his own clients and Masaki sucked on the inside of his cheek. “Um, there was an accident with the Matsumoto’s...”
“The Matsumoto’s?” Masaki repeated numbly pulling his drawer open and searching through the files in there. It didn’t take him long and he pulled it out and flipped it open. The Matsumoto’s were a pair of grey wolf hybrid, described in the file, as the only breeding pair in Japan. They had a young son, Jun. A photo was included in the file and Masaki remembered meeting them once when they had registered the birth of their son. “What happened?”
“I’m afraid that they have passed away” The nurse said and Masaki’s heart jerked in his chest his eyes immediately filled with tears as he spluttered;
“The entire family?”
“No, their son survived, though he has had to be admitted, he has a broken tail and bumped his head...” The nurse explained and Masaki stood up grabbing his coat as he said swiftly;
“I will be right there”
“I will see you soon” The nurse sounded almost relieved and bid him goodbye and then shut off his computer and headed out the office. He was the only one who worked in the hybrid-relations department as most humans hated associating with them but Masaki had always loved them. He had always found them beautiful, even when he had been at school his best friend from those days was a cat Hybrid Ninomiya Kazunari. Masaki hadn’t seen him in years but he could still remember the way Nino had snuggled against him rubbing his cheek against his chest.
It had started to rain as he left the office and he sighed throwing his coat over his head and hurrying to the train station hoping that it wouldn’t be long before he could get to the hospital.

Matsumoto Jun sucked his thumb hugging his pink rabbit teddy to his chest as he watched the nurses and doctors bustling around the small ward. It smelt strange and it was nosy and he wanted to go home and find his mummy and daddy. He wanted to cry but his daddy had told him that big boys didn’t cry and he was a big boy. He snuggled his rabbit closer to his body hoping his mummy would come and get him soon. He looked up hopefully as the door to the ward opened but he was disappointed to just see a tall human walking in wearing a wet jacket. The male rabbit hybrid nurse followed behind the human speaking rapidly.
“This is Jun-kun”
“Hello, Jun-kun, nice to meet you, my name is Masaki” The human said softly coming to sit down next to the bed his eyes falling to the rabbit. “And who is this?”
“Bingo...” Jun whispered with his thumb still in his mouth and Masaki bowed his head at the rabbit in a very polite way.
“Nice to meet you Bingo-san” Jun giggled at the antics and pulled his thumb from his mouth to say;
“He’s just a teddy”
“Eh?! Jut a teddy?! It’s not just a teddy, it is very clearly a very fierce protector, very noble and brave...He keeps you safe ne?” Masaki asked and Jun studied he rabbit closely mulling over the question. His mummy had brought in the rabbit when he had been having nightmares, she had told him that he would never have nightmares again and she had been right, Bingo guarded him like Masaki said.
“Yes”
“See...And now here he is protecting you in the hospital, how are you feeling, Jun-kun? Umeda-san said you had a nasty bump on your head and your tail in broken...”
“I’m okay! I’m a big boy! But...I wanna see my mummy and daddy! Please! They tooken them away and I haven’t seen them...I’m no crying! Tell daddy I’m not crying I’m a big boy...” Jun pleaded hoping that the strange but kind human would help him find his mummy and daddy. “Mummy had a big booboo on her face and Daddy was sleeping...”
“Jun-kun, I’m sorry sweetheart but...Your mummy and daddy...They didn’t make it...” Masaki said and Jun stared at him in horror not fully understanding the words that were coming out of his mouth but somehow knowing that Bingo couldn’t protect him from it. His eyes stung with the tears he didn’t want to shed and he looked at the nurse who was pulling on his ears looking like he wished he was somewhere else. “They went to heaven sweetheart, they didn’t want to go and leave you but they were so badly hurt that they couldn’t stay...”
“But...But...What about me?” Jun asked squeezing Bingo ever more tightly as his ears lay completely flat against his head and Masaki reached out and took his hand in his own.
“You are going to be just fine, sweetheart, I’m going to look after you...” He promised and Jun gave a nod but slowly tears dripped from his eyes and down his cheeks.

“Poor mite, what’s going to happen to him, now?” Umeda asked when Jun had cried himself to sleep and Masaki worried at his lip for a while before sighing;
“He will have to be placed, the homes won’t take him because he’s a predator type and his parents were the only grey wolves in Japan...”
“...But...What will happen? He’s just a kid...”
“I know, there is a timber wolf...He’s a recluse in the mountains but he’s a good guy, I will call him...” Masaki hummed though it was somewhat reluctant. Sakurai Sho hated almost all humans and Masaki couldn’t say he blamed him. For some reason he was one of the few humans that Sho could tolerate but he didn’t know if Sho would be willing to take on a small kid. He half wished that he could take he kid himself but he knew that wasn’t allowed humans couldn’t raise Hybrids just as Hybrids couldn’t raise humans. They weren’t the same kind of wolf but they would have more in common than he and Jun would. If Sho wouldn’t take him however then he had no idea what he was going to do.
