Ninomiya Kazunari, also known as Nino to his few friends looked nervously at his reflection in the long mirror in front of him. The outfit was simple and standard attire but somehow managed to cling to curves that he didn’t really have and surprisingly with a little bit of lipstick and eyeshadow he thought he made for a passable maid. He wouldn’t win any competitions but he wouldn’t be thrown out straight away. A tight knot of nerves wouldn’t leave his stomach though and he felt for sure that he would throw up as soon as anyone even spoke to him. He needed the job however and he had always preformed rather well in the school drama club where he was often forced into traditionally female roles due to the fact he attended an all boys school.
When he had seen the ad in the paper he had thought it too good to be true. The hours were reasonable and the wages good. It would give him enough time to work around his school work and enough money to put away for next term’s tuition and other emergencies that might turn up. Of course when he had seen that it was for you females only he had balked and sighed frustrated at the world until his friend Aiba Masaki had said that he could pose as a girl. It had been funny when he had come to the house and applied but now he didn’t feel much like laughing.
The butler, who had informed him that he was the only male staff on site, had been convinced that he was a woman even in the badly fitting skirt and blouse that he had borrowed from Masaki’s younger sister who had been up for the joke as much as her older brother. She had even allowed him to use her name and the report card from her school. He had been given the job almost immediately and had been told to report for his first shift that Saturday where he would be given a uniform and his orders.
He wasn’t afraid of hard work but he was terrified of being found out. He didn’t really know if what he was doing was a crime but the house gave the impression that the owner, somebody he hadn’t met yet, was the type of person that could make it a crime if he so wanted. Nino fixed the stockings he was wearing and then adjusted the white headpiece grateful that he hadn’t bothered with a hair cut for some time so his hair was long enough to pass without the need for a wig. He was just adjusting the bra filled with a soft jelly that Masaki’s sister Yuriko had given him when a crisp knock sounded on the door.
“Yuriko-chan, are you ready?” The husky voice of the butler called through the wood and Nino swallowed a thick lump from the back of his throat and then called back in a higher than normal voice;
“Yes, I’m coming!” One final glance in the mirror and then he pulled open the door and stepped out slowly. There was bright sunlight coming in through large windows and he kept his head bowed remembering that the light would cause harsh shadows over his face had make it more obvious that he was in actual fact a he and not the woman he was pretending to be.
“Well you look smart enough I suppose” The older man huffed out slowly looking him up and down before nodding “Very smart. As I told you your duties will include cleaning the main areas of the house and our employer likes to have his main household staff to be dressed smartly in case of visitors. You are responsible for your uniform you will take it home and clean it yourself, any replacement costs will come from your wages...”
“Yes, sir” Nino nodded looking up just a little to see where he was going when he saw a familiar figure walking not so far away and he whispered out sharply in strangled horror “Sakurai-senpai”
“The young master, you are familiar with him?” The butler asked suspiciously and Nino panicked trying to think quickly. Nino didn’t know him on a personal level as he was the year in front of him in school but he was well known and had a good reputation though many people thought he was cold. It was said that he lived with his aging grandfather who was a famous composer and although Nino didn’t know if that was true he did know that Sho was the best pianist he had ever heard. The compositions that he created were breath taking and yet he rarely entered any competitions. “Yuriko-chan?”
“Ah my brother Masaki attends the same school as Sakurai-sempai I have seen him around” Nino answered hoping that would be enough to satisfy the blunder he had made. The butler eyed him slowly and then nodded as he rubbed his fingers over his chin.
“I see, well even if you know him as a friend, remember that you are here as an employee, you will behave in the manner that befits your position or you will find your employ here to be incredibly short” He said slowly and Nino was well aware that he was being told that there was to be no fraternizing and he was fine with that. If he could stay as far away from Sakurai Sho while he was dressed like this he would be extremely happy knowing that there was no way he would be able to live such a thing like that down.
“I understand, and we have never even spoken to each other, I was just surprised. When I went to my brother’s school I heard him play the piano and thought he was good” He hummed and the butler nodded again.
“He is of the same mould of his grandfather...This way, this is the fastest way to the servants wing where your cleaning supplies are kept...” The man started rambling on again about his duties and Nino listened attentively hoping that he wouldn’t have to spend too long in Sho’s company though it would be unlikely that he would recognise him if he did.
