Nino woke as he was being carried out of the van and into the prison. Satoshi was holding him almost like a princess and he jolted with some embarrassment as Satoshi held him closely and Nino relaxed letting out a long sigh. He couldn’t believe how tired he was but he knew that he hadn’t been sleeping and crying had always taken it out of him.
“It’s okay, just rest a little” The older man hummed softly and Nino did as he was told his head staying pressed against Satoshi’s shoulder. Nobody said anything as they moved through the prison, nobody had said anything all together since the riot. He knew that Satoshi hadn’t told him everything that had happened but what he didn’t tell him Nino could easily imagine. He was terrified with how little he cared, they had hurt Masaki and killed Gunther after all. “How are you feeling?”
“…Tired…Did that happen today? Did Umeda really forgive me?” He asked feeling completely lost as though everything had been a dream. He didn’t know if he wanted it to be a dream or not. He still didn’t know how he was meant to feel. Satoshi stopped walking and lightly answered him with a warm and gentle;
“Yes, she really did, how do you feel about that?”
“I don’t know what I should do. I never expected that, I never thought…I never even dreamed that she could ever forgive me like that, much less want me to be free…” Nino could still remember her from the trial. She hadn’t said anything to him, but he could remember her eyes as she looked at him. It wasn’t something that he wouldn’t ever be able to forget and yet today, today had been different. Her eyes had been filled with warmth and he could tell that she had meant every word she had said but he didn’t know how he was meant to feel about that. “Did you…convince her?”
“No, I understand why you might think that but I didn’t I merely provided her with some information, mostly about your talk, and asked her if she would come. She did, you convinced her all on your own, my love…” Satoshi answered and Nino believed him. He had never told him everything but he had always been honest with him and Nino knew that he wouldn’t lie to him. He just couldn’t understand how she had been so brave.
“But how? How could she forgive me like that? I killed her husband…”
“And you will pay for it, you will never forget the life you took but as she said, prison is not the place for you” Satoshi informed him firmly and Nino almost allowed himself to smile but it faded quickly as came. They had started moving again and Nino saw that they were almost back to his cell. Things had gotten stricter for Satoshi since Sho had taken over the prison but the guards that had been hired were still somewhat afraid of him and nobody stopped them as they moved through the prison. “You can continue to repent outside of these walls. This place is not for the likes of you”
“…So you want me to go through with it?” The question wasn’t really needed. He knew that Satoshi wanted them both to be out and in his house on one of the Hawaiian Islands but Nino also knew that he would stay here if that’s what he wanted. It was so confusing to have somebody happy to stay in prison just because you might want to stay.
“Yes, I do, but I will respect whatever you want, my love, but I wouldn’t make my mind up today, I would sleep, talk to Masaki and make yourself feel comfortable” Satoshi hummed and Nino nodded. Masaki had wanted to be there today but he had had another meeting with the lawyers. His case was coming to court extremely quickly and Nino wondered what the lawyers were doing to make that happen. Masaki had told them everything and they had, in turn, looked into reports that had been out of Masaki’s uncle and the coach and their activities with other young boys. Masaki’s reaction had been extreme but given his fragile mental state at the abuse and his fear that it would be transferred to his brother that combined with a recommendation from his prison therapist it would mean that Masaki could be out within the year. The thought of losing the man that he had come to love as brother wasn’t a comfortable one but the guilt was still fixed heavily inside his heart.
“…I was sentenced for life…”
“Yes, you shouldn’t have been. It was an accident, you didn’t mean for it to happen. You don’t have to make your mind up today, sweetheart” Satoshi hummed pressing open the metal door of his cell with his hip.
“Nino! How did it go?” Masaki asked jumping up from his bed where he was reading through his lawyer’s notes and Nino gave a small smile as he was set down by his lover. In a soft voice Nino explained everything that had happened and he wasn’t surprised when Masaki started crying. “Oh! That is…Amazing! She was so brave! You were so brave! To think that she wants to help you get out?! That must have been so hard for her to say, even if she forgave you, but it shows how much she means it! It would be rude of you to refuse…”
“Masaki…”
“Sorry, I know you are probably really confused, but…Yeah, think of it from her point of view, she wants you out, you are the person that took away her husband, she should have some say in what happens to you…You want to stay in prison for punishment but her punishment is for you to live in a better way and remember her husband…” Masaki shrugged his tone matter of fact but not hurtful and Nino knew what he was saying and honestly it did make a lot of sense. In a lot of ways life out of prison would be a lot harder for him than life in prison. “Living happily might be more of a punishment than staying in prison but…It is only fair that you respect the will of the family if that is what you want…”
“Masaki…You…You’re right…”
“I can be sometimes, Nino-chan, you told me that I deserve a life, but so do you, for you and Umeda Takuya, you owe it to him to be the best that you can be. His wife is prepared to do that for you, now you need to be prepared to do it for yourself” Masaki smiled and ruffled his hair and slowly Nino nodded sucking in a long gulp of air before whispering;
“Okay…If it’s possible…I want to get out…”
