“Good morning” Sakurai Shizuyo said with a smile at the teenage girl that had just stepped onto the elevator. She moved her bag aside to give the girl more room. She had seen her around a great many times but had never really spoken to her. Today didn’t seem to be the day anything would change. The girl, an extremely naturally pretty girl with long messy hair that never seemed to look like she even knew what a brush was, grunted unintelligibly as she searched through her phone. Shizuyo allowed her eyes to move discreetly over the girls body having to acknowledge that although she didn’t stand a chance with her the girl was very much her type. Her face was small and cute with a button nose and thin but kissable lips. In all the times she had seen her she had never seen her wear make-up but Shizuyo recognised that she didn’t need it. Her lashes were long and black and her face was as smooth as cake batter.
Shizuyo stopped looking at the girl when her mother followed shortly after her talking on her phone her voice crisp and almost cold. She jerked her head in Shizuyo’s direction but focused on the conversation she was having. The teen girl rolled her eyes at her, her lips twitching just slightly and Shizuyo gave her a smile in response. The doors of the elevator closed and they went down stopping on the next floor. The doors opened and Matsumoto Juran stepped on. Another person Shizuyo had never actually spoken to but her fame proceeded her. Matsumoto Juran was Japans top female idol and her face graced almost all the magazines in Japan. “Good morning”
“Morning” Juran answered yawning slowly behind her hand almost dropping a script that had been tucked under her arm and Shizuyo would imagine that behind the large glasses there were deep shadows. “Nino”
“Yo” The teen girl muttered with a bow and Shizuyo guessed that Nino must be some form of nickname. Juran bobbed her head at the teen who was already looking through her phone again. Once again the elevator started and once again it stopped on the next floor. A wild barking let everyone know who would be getting on next and they all shifted to one side. Nino’s mother was scowling as the doors slid open and a girl, not much older than Nino stepped in. Aiba Madori. She was an extremely pretty woman, some might say voluptuous with large natural breasts that were firm even without the aid of a bra. She often, like now, wore a denim one piece that was short on her long legs. To Shizuyo it was as though she was aware of her beauty while at the same time didn’t care or rather wasn’t. She had a friendly personality however and even Shizuyo had to admit that she liked her.
“Good morning!” Madori said slightly breathlessly as she ran onto the elevator with her two dogs. Both were lumbering beasts, one being a husky/malamute cross and the other being a Alsatian/husky cross but both were as friendly as their owner and were soon wagging their tails happily as they strained against their leads. Shizuyo wasn’t completely sure what Madori did for a living but she had heard some jealous people claim that she was a hostess at a bar or even an escort. “Nino-chan! How are you! Sakurai-san! Ninomiya-san”
“Good morning, Aiba-san” Shizuyo said with a smile finding it impossible not to smile at the other woman who started rambling quite happily about a book club or something. The elevator skipped the next two floors but stopped on the first. The doors slid open and all of them peered out onto the landing none really surprised to see Ohno Samai standing outside a sleepy expression on her face. Shizuyo knew the woman’s husband more than she knew the woman but they had met on a few social occasions and she had always thought the woman to be somewhat...An empty suit, like her father would say, she was a country girl who had married straight out of school to a man much older than herself. She had had two children and that seemed to be the only thing about her personality. Samai stood blankly not making any move to get into the elevator until Nino cleared her throat and said in a slightly nasally tone;
“Yo, earth to woman outside, you planning on coming down to earth any time soon?”
“Huhn? Oh sorry!” The woman flushed blinking rapidly before getting into the elevator and turning her attention to the dogs without another word to them even when Madori tried to engage her in conversation. Shizuyo found herself catching Nino’s eye and the teen gave a roll of her shoulders before flicking her hair back and looking at the phone again. Shizuyo looked away not wanting to focus her attention any further on the pale slim neck or the moles she could see. She clutched her briefcase tightly and breathed deep the mingling scent of perfumes collecting, all as different as the women around her, and she wondered which was Nino’s. Thankfully the last trip was short and they all exited the elevator fairly quickly while Madori said;
“Don’t forget! The first meeting is this weekend! There’s a notice on the board!”
“Right” Shizuyo mumbled though she had absolutely no idea what the woman was talking about. Her eyes did go to the message board that she was pointing to and she had to admit that curiosity got the better of her and she walked over. A handmade sign, out of place around the neat professional ones, stood out clearly with the bright colours it was decorated in announcing an apartment book club was forming that Saturday and the meeting would take place in the apartment office room on the ground floor. Shizuyo would admit that she was a keen reader but it was never something she had thought to discuss with other people, but then she was a solitary person never really having time for friends, the only thing that didn’t stop her from rejecting the thing outright was the fact that Mrs Ninomiya was saying to Nino;
“You should go to that Kazumi, playing as many games as you do isn’t healthy...It might do you some good...Get out and meet people...”
“Will it stop you whining at me?”
“I do not whine at you, you are almost 19...” The conversation faded as the pair vanished out of the apartment building and Shizuyo licked her plump lips and then rolled her shoulders. Maybe a book club wouldn’t be too much of a bad thing after all she thought, a spring in her step as she headed to work, it certainly couldn’t hurt.
