“You’re always like that, when you’re sulking. You hide the things that are important to me, its the same place as always. So today I’ll go there first and wait for you...” The busker sand while Ohno Satoshi pushed his daughter Satomi on the swing. Satoshi couldn’t keep his eyes off of the young man that was singing so passionately while managing to have a playful smile on his lips. His fingers, short stumpy things, moved slowly over the strings of the guitar. His face was narrow but he had a button shaped nose and a thin mouth. People threw money into his open guitar case but only a handful of people, mostly teen girls wearing school uniforms, stopped to watch him.
“Apa” Satomi said with a slur lifting her tiny chubby hands up telling him in her own way that she had finished on the swing and wanted to do something else. At only three she didn’t have much grasp on language yet thought Satoshi often wondered if that had something to do with him. He wasn’t the most vocal person on the planet after all and he could go hours without talking to the little girl that was his whole world. After helping her out of the swing Satomi waddled off towards the small climbing frame. With half an eye on her he continued to watch the young busker wishing he had some money to put in his case but he wasn’t due his wages until Friday and even then most of it would be swept up in bills and new clothes for his princess. She always seemed to need new clothes and although his mother helped out when she could he was determined that he would be a good parent but it wasn’t easy when he had to act as both mother and father to the little girl.
Her mother had run off only three days after she had been born claiming that she wasn’t ready to be a parent, much less with somebody who was clearly homosexual but in denial. She had relinquished all parental rights of Satomi and the last he had heard she was living in Hawaii getting stoned and surfing. The social workers had gotten involved and had tried to get him to give Satomi up for adoption but he loved his daughter and had flatly refused.
While he was thinking and watching the young man he didn’t notice that Satomi had diverted in her path to the climbing frame and instead had toddled over to the man’s guitar case and had proceeded to start taking out the coins. It wasn’t until he heard her giggle that blinked and realised to his horror what she was doing.
“Tomi! You can’t do that!” He said running over and scooping up the girl trying to pull the coins out of her hands. His face was a beet red as the young man stopped singing, the note of the guitar dying awkwardly as he let out a nasally laugh. He put his guitar down and gave a small jump coming to bend a little so he could look in Satomi’s face. He was grinning in a way that suggested he couldn’t care about the money and Satoshi could smell his scent rolling off of him. It was fresh, a strange mix of sweet and minty, and he tried his hardest not to breathe in too deeply.
“Are you a cutie! You take after your papa, ne?” The man said in the sweet but oddly cat like voice. Satomi stopped squirming in his arms her entire body going still as she looked at the man that had spoken to her. Her chubby lips pursed together as her eyes studied him from under her long hair. Her fists were still clenched around the coins and it appeared that she was not going to let go any time soon.
“I’m sorry, I’ll get it off of her” Satoshi said slowly barely registering that the young man had indirectly called him cute.
“Ninomiya Kazunari, most people call me Nino” The man told him with a roll of the shoulders and Satoshi balked for a moment before clearing his throat and saying;
“Ohno Satoshi and this is my daughter Satomi”
“Cute! Papa and Daughter names!” Nino laughed bending down and taking the rest of his money from his case before putting his guitar in it and shutting it with a click.
“My mum was going to call me Satomi if I were a girl...” He said stupidly. Satomi’s mother had flatly refused to name the girl and the only girl’s name he knew was Satomi.
“Aww, nice to meet you, Satomi-chan...Ohno-san...” Nino said with a happy smile throwing his case over his shoulder. “Shall we go get some ice-cream Satomi-chan?”
“Ceam?” Satomi babbled happily her pouty lips becoming a smile quickly as she waved her hands up and down. Satoshi watched his daughter in bemusement before looking at the young man who seemed to be thoroughly in a happy place of his own making.
“Yup! There is a shop on the other end of the park, it has the best ice cream in Japan!” Nino hummed in a happy childish way and although there was no way Satomi would have understood everything that was said that didn’t stop her from growing increasingly more excited. Satoshi didn’t know how to respond. He knew he shouldn’t go off with a stranger, even a cute one, but Satomi was extremely excited now and he knew he couldn’t refuse. “Come on than! How old are you Satomi-chan?”
“She’s three” Satoshi answered while Satomi babbled happily to herself. He had never seen his daughter so animated and he couldn’t help but say “You’re good with kids”
“I grew up with 45 brothers and sisters so I should be” Nino answered with a laugh and a wink while they started to walk towards the ice cream shop and Satoshi blinked dumbly staring at the man’s back until Satomi gave a cry obviously thinking she wouldn’t be getting her ice cream. “I was brought up in an orphanage...”
“Oh...Right...I’m sorry”
“Don’t be, it wasn’t like Oliver Twist, those that looked after us were nice people...” Nino grinned over his shoulder and Satoshi gave a sort of numb nod and then lapsed into silence until the ice cream shop came into view. The place was modern decorated in cheerful pastel colours with circular seats around the front, it had opened only a few months ago and Satomi had tried several times to drag him to it drawn in by the bright colours and the cheerful music but he didn’t have the money for luxury ice cream. He didn’t now and he swallowed eyeing Nino who was chattering happily to his Satomi who was babbling away in baby talk. “Take a seat and I will get the ice cream...”
“Uhn...You really don’t have to...I mean...” Satoshi spluttered hating backing out knowing that Satomi would scream but knowing he couldn’t afford the place.
“Relax” Nino smiled in a cute way pushing him down into what was probably the only empty seat before dumping down his guitar and heading to the ice cream stand. Instead of joining the line like everyone else he opened the door and slipped inside the man serving, a tall beautiful man with a husky voice, shouted at him a little but it was playful and Nino just stuck his tongue out at him before serving himself some ice cream.
“You...Know him?” Satoshi asked as Nino came back with three bowls of soft serve ice cream. Satomi’s was like a unicorn had thrown up into the bowl with the bright colours and sweets that were all over it. Nino nodded sitting down to his own bowl of vanilla while Satoshi looked at the bowl of chocolate and strawberry that had been put in front of him. Satomi finally released her hold on Nino’s money picking up the spoon she had been given before diving into her ice cream.
“Yeah, he’s one of my brothers. Masaki...He owns this place...His husband bought it for him as a wedding gift...” Nino answered with a shrug waving at the good looking man who waved back cheerfully before serving another customer. “So, Ohno-san, tell me about yourself...”
