Masaki left to ring Toma and Sho lay down looking at his cute nephew. He had always been fond of him, ever since his sister had first announced his birth. Sho could remember looking down at the tiny baby with a large head knowing that he would do everything within his power to look after him. He failed miserably. Masaki would deny that and so would Kazu but in his heart he had failed. He knew that he couldn’t change that but he could start again and that was what he was going to do. He heard Masaki talking rather calmly to the social worker in the next room and was surprised when Masaki’s rather cheerful ring tone started near him. Pulling out the phone quickly not wanting the music to startle Kazu awake he pressed the answer button without even looking at it thinking it was his mum or brother.

“Hello? Masaki’s phone?”

“Hello, this is Takamura from the hospital, I’m sorry to disturb you so late at night but is Masaki there?” A womans voice asked down the line sounding so distraught that Sho jumped up and hurried out of the bedroom. Masaki was ending his call and frowned a little as he saw him.

“Its Takamura from the hospital” Sho said and Masaki nodded reaching out and taking the phone while handing over his.

“Hello, Takamura-sensei...” Masaki said with a false smile. Sho knew all of his lover’s smiles, he had a million of them that he shared with the world and several that were solely for him and Kazu but this was his least favourite. His eyes dimmed and filled with tears while he still stayed smiling as though if he did the bad thing wouldn’t happen. “Junnosuke-kun? But he was...I know, his condition wasn’t good...But...I hoped...Okay, I...I will try and be there as soon as possible...Thank you for calling...”

“Masaki?” Sho breathed drawing Masaki’s attention as the smile slipped away and tears rolled down his cheeks. He had seen this a few times throughout their relationship. It was never easy and in truth most of the time he didn’t know how to handle it.

“Junnosuke-kun, he has cancer in his bone marrow, they did a transplant and all seemed fine, but he’s started to reject it and he got sick. The family asked if I could go in. I’m sorry Sho...” Masaki whispered drying his eyes with the back of his hands before looking to the bedroom door. His lover looked so lost and broken that Sho wanted to wrap him in his arms and hold him as tightly as he could but that wasn’t what Masaki wanted or needed. He wanted permission to go to the hospital and be with another family that needed him.

“It’s okay, I’ll take care of Kazu”

“Thanks Sho-chan” Masaki whispered smiling again before turning and leaving. He was such an emotional person Sho couldn’t understand how he managed to do the things that he did day after day, he had seen countless children die and yet he always went back. Masaki had told him once, after a little girl had died, that his heart had broken a thousand times and yet he still wanted to be there because it had been healed a million times more by those that had made it.

Sho went back to his nephew and lay on his side for a moment or two knowing that he wouldn’t sleep until Masaki was home. Eventually he got bored of watching his nephews sleeping face and took out his phone. Masaki and Kazu had talked about building a treehouse in the garden of the house if they got it and although he didn’t want to count chickens before they had hatched he was confident. He had offered rather a lot more than the asking price after all. And he wanted to look up plans on building treehouses. Masaki couldn’t be off work forever and Sho was wondering if he should use some of his own time off to build the house with Kazu. It was something he had longed to do as a child but his parents had refused to even consider it as an option. He was sure that Masaki’s dad and brother would help if he needed it as well.

He was on his fourth YouTube video on building treehouses when Kazu started whimpering. It was soft at first but it soon grew louder until he was almost screaming the apartment down. Masaki had informed the neighbours and landlord about Kazu’s night terrors and they had all been understanding and pitying. Sho tried to comfort him the best he could whispering soothing words while at the same time trying to wake him. It didn’t work Kazu remained lost in his nightmare world sobbing about being taken away until Sho whispered;

“Never gonna happen, Kazu-kun, you are staying with your papa and your daddy forever...We’re gonna get that house and I’m gonna build you a tree house like nobody has ever seen before...”

“Daddy” Kazu whispered into his chest his body relaxing completely, so completely that it wasn’t long before Sho felt a wet patch against his leg. Kazu let out a whimper and Sho held him tightly.

The next forty five minutes were fun, washing Kazu and making plans to spoil Masaki that weekend made his heart feel lighter and when Masaki came in just as the sun was coming up he urged Kazu towards him and they fell asleep together on the sofa.

They, Masaki and Sho at least, woke around nine and Masaki whispered;

“I have to go back to the hospital later, the family want me with them, I couldn’t say no Sho-chan”

“Of course you couldn’t, I will take the day off and stay with Kazu, but...How are you feeling?”

“Like I always do. It is heart breaking but I will do what I can for the family Sho-chan, they need me to be there...Kazu needs me to, but he’s got you, and you are a good daddy, I always knew you would be...” Masaki flashed him one of the special smiles that was reserved for him and Sho frowned a little saying;

“You are probably the only one that thinks that”

“I think it too, Daddy” Kazu whispered sleepily opening his eyes and looking at him. “I always have”

“I’m glad, cause I am gonna be your daddy for a long, long time...Just as Masaki is gonna be your papa, nobody is gonna come between us...” Sho promised wrapping his arms around both Masaki and Kazu. “It’s us three for life, threw thick and thin, good times and bad, I love you both and nobody...Not even that old hag I once called mother is going to change that...”

A/N: There will be a time skip in the next part as I really don’t want to deal with Masaki at the hospital and such...>.<
