Masaki cursed the fact that he hadn’t thought about his little Kazu when Sho had put the phone on speaker. He had hoped that the woman wouldn’t be as bad as he had feared but he should have known that Sho wouldn’t exaggerate the truth. The woman was nothing but an old hag and she was another one they would have to get a court order for. It would be harder as she was Kazu’s grandmother and a woman but Masaki had faith that everything would work out for the best. He hugged Kazu close as the boy cried apologising for being weak and causing problems.

“Oh my sweet little man, nothing could be further from the truth. You are not weak and you are not causing any problems. I am so lucky to have you in my life” Masaki whispered rocking Kazu back and forth while breathing kisses into his hair line. “I have only known you for a few days but I love you with all my heart and soul”

“Me too, Kazu, I love you too” Sho said hugging the boy from behind and Kazu seemed to cry even harder. Masaki could feel the droplets raining down on his chest and he clung to his boy. Kazu had been so pleased and proud that morning, it had seemed as though he was making giant steps forwards but now it seemed as though he had taken even bigger ones back. If he could get his hands on the woman Masaki knew that he would need an alibi. How she could think that what Kazu suffered was normal and that it was his fault for being weak. “I’m sorry about what that woman said but it’s not true, you are not weak...I will never answer a call from her again”

“In the morning I’m going to call Ikuta san and make sure she is added to the court order, she won’t be allowed near you, my sweet little man, I promise” Masaki whispered and the boy nodded his tears still falling but he seemed to be slowly calming down. Soon Kazu slumped against him and Masaki picked him up easily like a princess and held him against his chest. The boy really was still too light and bony.

“I’m sorry, I thought he was asleep”

“It’s not your fault Sho-chan” Masaki said with a smile in his lover’s direction before turning and carrying Kazu to the bedroom. He lay him down on his futon and lay beside him. He was positive that Kazu wouldn’t wake again after the bout of crying but he didn’t want to leave him if he had nightmares. “Papa and daddy are going to protect you from everything, I promise Kazu-kun and you Sho-chan, you don’t need her or your father, we’ll be your family...”

“You already are my family, Masaki, you have always been more of a family to me than they ever have” Sho hummed in reply from the doorway and Masaki smiled turning to look at the man.

“Come here” He said holding out his hand and coaxing him over. Although he hadn’t reacted as badly as Kazu it was clear that the conversation with his mother had affected Sho almost as much. The man came dutifully over and although he stayed by Kazu he turned and held out his hands to Sho. “This was always going to happen, Sho-chan, Kazu-kun has suffered through a lot and he is fragile but not a single moment was your fault. Understand?”

“I shouldn’t have put the phone onto speaker. I know what my mum is like”

“She is a bitch, and that’s swearing” Masaki growled. The word came out awkwardly from his mouth, he had never been one for swearing even as a child, less so since he had started working on the children’s ward. The closest he got to swearing was ‘Gumdropts and Sugerpuffs’ but Sho’s mother had made him so angry that he wanted to scream and swear as much as he wanted. Sho chuckled and kissed his nose at the awkward swear word and Masaki flushed and then sighed. “She is going to be trouble, Sho-chan, more so than your sister will be, I think...And she will have more rights because we are gay...But I am not going to let that happen, we will do everything they tell us and more we are the best people to take care of Kazu-kun and I will not let that hag win”

“Nope, never...” Sho nodded kissing his nose again before brushing his hair out of his face. Masaki blinked realising that he was crying. He had always been the same, he had always felt everything clearly and sharply and he cried over the smallest thing. This wasn’t a small thing however and he was worried, more so than he was trying to let on, if Sho’s mother decided to say she wanted Kazu then the court would automatically rule in her favour because he and Sho were gay. Sho hugged him tightly tucking his head under his chin as his fingers moved up and down his spine in a gentle way. The fingertips brushed over his skin in a way that should have been ticklish but wasn’t. It was warm and gentle and Masaki let out a long breath.

“I should phone Ikuta now, it is best to get a head start, right?”

“Yup, I was thinking the same thing...” Sho said in agreement and Masaki pulled his way out of his boyfriend’s arms and then stood up.

“Stay with Kazu-kun, I will be back in a moment”
