Days in the cabin passed in a hazy blur for Nino but he enjoyed every minute of them. He woke early and prepared meals for him and Sho before Sho would teach him things that he should have been taught but never was. He refused to teach him anything about alpha and omega until he could read and write to a level that matched his age. Nino was embarrassed at how awkwardly his hand moved the page over the paper and how his voice cracked over even simple words but it always felt worth it when Sho gave him praise. It was few and far between and yet that only made it seem more genuine. After lunch Nino would amuse himself in the hot spring while Sho would study the papers and then when he came out he would listen quietly to Sho’s ramblings.

He wasn’t quite sure if the alpha was talking to him or himself so he stayed silent unless asked a direct question. Dinner would be served then and they would sit and Sho would amuse him with tales of his adventures and sometimes would include stories of his father and mother. Satoshi and Masako. Nino still wasn’t certain that they were his parents but the more he looked at the painting the more he hoped that they were. After they had finished their various jobs for the day they would sit together on the bed and Sho would read to him. There was something beautiful about the way the alpha read, even when it was a simple story there was a magical element to it. It lulled him peacefully to sleep and gave him some of the best dreams he had ever had.

Sho wasn’t an easy man to live with. Even though Nino thought their days were happy ones he knew that Sho was blunt and to the point, his words could be cutting and yet he was always ready to apologise and admit his fault. It was never very serious but sometimes Nino thought he was wrestling with something that was making him strained. He wondered if it was something to do with his quest for Satoshi but couldn’t bring himself to ask. He had only just learned that his father might still be alive he didn’t want to hear that the man might really be dead after all. The more Sho was short with him however the less he felt like bowing his head and apologising. Just that morning he had immediately answered back to the scold and instead of being angry Sho had grinned broadly and nodded before leaving him to go into the room beyond the pantry.

Nino hadn’t seen that room yet and it was unlikely that he ever would. Sho had made him promise that he wouldn’t venture into it and although it had made him more curious Nino still wanted to do well and have Sho let him stay with him as he didn’t ever want to go to the pack that had possibly killed his mother, sent his father out into the wilderness, and raised him as nothing but a sigma slave. The betrayal of his pack was something that would feed his rage in quiet moments in the cabin and he would wonder what his life would have been like if Satoshi and Masaki had never been taken and he had been raised as their son.

From the picture he imagined that Masako would have been a doting and fun loving mother who was always laughing but he also imagined that she would be tough when she needed to be. Tougher at least than the sleepy looking alpha at her side. Nino was almost positive that the alpha would have been wrapped around his little finger and would have spoiled him rotten just because. His lips twitching at the thoughts he pulled his eyes away from the painting embarrassed when he saw Sho standing over him.

“Are you wanting something?” He asked nervously jumping up into a standing position and Sho shook his head slowly before answering.

“No, I was just thinking how much you looked like your mother...”

“Masako? I don’t look anything like her! She was beautiful...” Nino mumbled his cheeks turning a little red though he knew that Sho wasn’t complimenting him, not really at least.

“Beauty is subjective, what is beautiful to one isn’t to another” Sho shrugged running his fingers through his hair before pinching the bridge of his nose and blinking as though he was trying to shift a headache. “Though I will confess that your mother was one of the few women I considered to be beautiful...”

“Were...Were you in love with...Masako?” Nino asked his throat closing up as he looked down at his shoes. They were Satoshi’s as the ones he had had were so threadbare they offered no protection from the cold as is toes were peeking through. Sho cleared his throat and then sighed heavily for a moment before saying;

“My feelings whatever they are, are my own, but for your information, no, I was not in love with your mother, I merely respected her as a close friend, one of the few I have ever had...” Sho admitted that last part very quietly as though he didn’t want to say it at all. It was something he saw in the alpha a few times but before Sho stopped and would change the subject this time he continued with the red flash around his irises flashing. “To think what the people of that village could have done to her makes me angrier than I have ever felt. If the snow had not come so quickly and strongly I am sure that I would have acted rashly...”

“...I’m sorry for asking, I know that it has nothing to do with me”

“No, it doesn’t, but I suppose it is normal for you to be curious” Sho gave a shrug and then brought out the book that he had been reading to him. “I have a small headache so for this evening you can read”

“Okay...I can do it!” Nino agreed knowing that the conversation was over for now. He took the book and Sho settled himself down onto the bed beside him. When they had first shared the bed Nino had been too nervous to sleep, he didn’t think that Sho would do anything to him but he had never slept with another person before and he was worried that he might behave strangely, now though it was nice to have the warmth of somebody else pressed beside him. The winters had always been the worst in his sty, often he thought that if he wasn’t shivering so much he would have frozen to death. Now when he shivered Sho wrapped his arm around him and pulled him into his body to fight the chill away. Nino almost blushed as he recalled that he ‘shivered’ more than he needed as he liked being pressed against Sho. Awkwardly clearing his throat, Nino opened the book and pressed a finger to the page before reading slowly but determinedly wanting Sho to be proud of him.
