Nino had never been happier to leave a mail coach as he was in that moment. He had left Cambridge a little after seven that morning and already it was midnight. Sleep hadn’t come to him while was travelling nor had he been able eat anything at the stops along the way. He alighted from the carriage and breathed deeply for a moment before gagging on the bitter salty air. Around him there was a large number of men and all looked as though they had had far too much to drink and worse for the wear. Looking passed the hordes of seamen he looked out over the town of Whitby.
It was dark but the moon high above offered him a glimpse of the town and the ocean beyond. The biggest ship in the port was a Scoop with black sails that were pulled tight into rolls. Away to the left of the ship was the ruins of the abbey high upon the hill. It looked eerie in the moonlight, the building black against the inky black sky. Still he was somewhat looking forward to climbing the hill and taking a look at the ruins.
“Oi, lad, yer case” The gruff voice of the carriage driver called and Nino pulled his eyes away from the men closest to him and looked up at the somewhat elderly man who was handing him down his case. It wasn’t very heavy, it contained only a few changes of clothes his other belonging being sent once he was settled but it was large and awkward given the box had to be sturdy to hold all his new medical equipment. He helped the driver get it down and then carried it into the inn that they had stopped beside. Even with the late hour the inn was crowded with people and it took him a great deal of time to make his way to the counter. An elderly woman with an unnaturally bright red wig and no teeth grinned at him as she wiped a glass with a rag.

Even with the late hour the inn was crowded with people and it took him a great deal of time to make his way to the counter. An elderly woman with an unnaturally bright red wig and no teeth grinned at him as she wiped a glass with a rag.
“What can I get yer, luvy?” She asked with a gummy grin and Nino managed to smile as he muttered;
“Doctor Johnson was meant to have got me a room? Kazunari Ninomiya” He swallowed as the woman looked a little confused. He supposed it was his own fault for trusting the man that he was here to stay and work with. Doctor Ruldoph Johnson had been one of his teachers in his first year in Cambridge. He hadn’t been the most reliable of his teachers but he had been the only one that had supported his idea of going somewhere where he was needed rather than where he would make money. His parents had wanted him to go to London where he would be able to treat only wealthy patients. Instead he had fled to Whitby and was suddenly afraid he had made the biggest mistake of his life.
“Ah, you will be the new doc’ just finished school…I’m Rita, me and my man run the inn ere like, I gots yer room all sorted out” Rita said in a cheerful voice her face clearing and Nino allowed himself to relax a little and gave her a tight smile. It wasn’t exactly natural, but he tried to tell himself that it was because he was tired and not because he was suck up like his parents were. “Had a long journey aint yer? Let’s get yer settled in the room then I’ll get yer something ter eat”
“Thank-you” Nino’s smile became more natural now and he genuinely felt grateful to her and her husband for giving him a room when it had been a last minute sort of thing. “But I am fine with just a bed, you are rather busy…I wouldn’t want to be a bother”
“Tis nah bother, lad, can’t have yer going to bed on an empty stomach and I’m sure what was offered in the inns on yer way did little ter state yer hunger. Won’t have a doc going hungry while staying wit me” Rita shook her head in what Nino could assume was a motherly way which caused the wig on her head to sway back and forth a little. “This lot will be gone soon as yer like, come on, lad, give us yer trunk ere”
“I can carry it. It’s not very heavy” Nino said not wanting the older woman to carry his trunk even if she did look a lot stronger than he was. It wasn’t the gentlemanly thing to do. Rita gave him a shrug and then shouted to the bear of a man on the other end of the counter. His face was almost covered by a tangled mass of hair. His hands and arms were covered with fading tattoos and wrinkles. Hair covered his forearms and knuckles and yet there was a friendly smile on his face.
“Yes, Luv?” He asked in a gruff voice and Nino knew that this was Rita’s man. It wasn’t much of a stretch, they seemed to be well suited for each other both frankly scary in appearance but both having a warm aura.
“Gonna take the boy up ter his room and get him settled…”
“Right yer are luvy…” The male smiled going back to what he had been doing before interrupted. He did smile and nod at Nino however and a smile that showed that his front four teeth were missing. Rita came out from behind the counter and then muscled her way through the crowds of people. All of them where happy to step aside and Nino learnt to stand as close as possible both wanting to keep up and not wanting to lose the woman who was shorter even than he was and that was saying something. The inn appeared to go on forever and Nino noticed that a large bunch of men were sitting quietly in the back drinking drinks and playing games. A man, small and tan, was in the centre of the others and when he looked up Nino felt his stomach clench a little as sleepy brown eyes stared into his.
“Keep up lad” Rita called over her shoulder and Nino hurried after her pulling his gaze away from the man who seemed to be giving him a little smirk and Nino was positive that he could feel his eyes on him as he moved up the creaky wooden stairs to the second floor. It was quieter up here and Nino allowed himself to breathe a little more calmly. “I’ve put yer in the best room in the inn. Great views of the abbey on the ‘ill and the ocean…” Rita told him in an excited tone and Nino gave a little smile again but said nothing as he lugged his trunk forward. Rita eventually stopped in front of a door at the end of the hallway and pulled an iron key out from the pocket of her skirt. She unlocked the door and pushed it open. Rita lit an oil lamp and ushered him inside. Nino followed and then sighed with a quiet sort of happiness as he brought his trunk forward and lay it on his bed. “Fire was lit this morning and it should be warm enough for you now but if you want some more wood just let me know, right?”
“Yes, thank-you…” Nino gave a smile and then sat on the bed testing it for comfort. It wasn’t the best bed that he had been on, but it wasn’t the worst either and he was just glad that it was his. For the last four years while studying in Cambridge he had had to share a bedroom with two other men, and they had been loud and annoying often returning to the room drunk and loud. There was a low murmur from below, but it wasn’t half as bad as it had been in the shared dorm room at college.
“I’ll give you a little while to get yersen settled but then I want yer down stairs fer summit to eat, yeah?” Rita told him and Nino gave a nod accepting the key from her. Rita gave him a smile and then ruffled his hair before she left and headed back out of the room leaving him alone in the room. Once the door was closed, he lay back on the back and closed his eyes. He didn’t mean to fall asleep but a mixture of tiredness and the sickly feeling from the carriage ride washed over him and he couldn’t open his eyes. His dreams were thankfully peaceful unbroken even when the men downstairs were told to leave around three in the morning.
Rita came by to the room at four and smiled as she saw him sleeping in the strange position and then quietly removed his shoes and then shifted him on the bed helping him be more comfortable. Once done she lifted the trunk down and set it beneath the window. She and her man had never been blessed with children of their own, not for lack of trying and she and Bert always treated those that came through their doors as family. Nino would be no exception not when he was looking as lost and alone as the boy before her was. She didn’t know his story, but she knew enough to know that only those that wanted to be lost came to Whitby and from what Johnson had said Nino wanted to be lost. Tucking the young man into the bed she smoothed out his hair with her fingers and then left through the door going to her man.
Nino was surprised when he work a few hours later and found himself moved on the bed. Sunlight was streaming in through the window and he could hear the shrill call of the gulls. He stretched out his back and then moaned as a few knots tried their best to straighten out. His mouth feeling like he had been eating dirt Nino got slowly to his feet and was glad to see a jug of water on the small chest of drawers along with a glass. He frowned as he saw the colour of the water and he remembered what one of his teachers had said about impurities in water causing a great deal of trouble. It wasn’t a theory that many surgeons believed in, but Nino had boiled water ever since and would make sure that all his patients would do the same. Not trusting the water Nino frowned and then opened his trunk pulling out his own water that he had stored in a bottle. He drank it down and then brushed his teeth and then washed his face down before heading out of the room and down the long corridor to the stairs.
“Good morning!” A smooth soft voice hummed from another doorway and Nino jumped in shock surprised to see the small tanned man from last night looking out at him. He was shirtless his hair was wet and glistening. His body was very muscular and covered with scars. Nino tried to look away and when he did, he saw a young man sound asleep on the bed. He was nude and there was a blissed-out expression on his sleeping face. His cheeks flaring red he looked away quickly and then turned on his heel and hurried down the wooden stairs ignoring the sound of chuckles.
The inn wasn’t empty but there were a lot less people than there had been the day before and Nino breathed deeply trying to forget what he had just seen but it was impossible. What he had just seen was all the things he had tried to deny about himself. It was immoral and unlawful to have such attraction to men the way that he should women. It was wrong. He clenched his fists tightly, his nails digging into the soft flesh of his palms. He winced but the pain managed to calm down his body enough for him to smile at Rita who gave him her wide gummy smile.
“Good morning, doc, hungry? Bet yer are, did yer sleep well?”
“Yes, thank-you. I’m sorry that I didn’t come down”
“Tis fine, get yerself sat down and I will get yer some breakfast” Rita waved her hand and Nino nodded and then headed over to a table near the window flushing as the tanned man came in looking happy. He looked around for a moment and then settled on him and Nino shifted uncomfortably in the chair. He came over to him and gave a smile saying;
“Satoshi Ohno…Captain of the Arashi…”
“Kazunari Ninomiya, doctor…” Nino mumbled out of politeness more than anything else and Satoshi seemed to think that was enough and then sat down in front of him looking for all the world as though they were old friends.
