“You are handling this better than I thought you would”

“Don’t get me wrong, I still can’t believe this but to be honest it’s not like it wasn’t completely unexpected....” Nino was saying as Jun joined them at the table they were sitting at. They were away in the corner near the loos and although it wasn’t the table Jun would have picked he could understand why Nino had. It was out of the way of the other tables and offered them a little privacy from everyone else around them. His date looked beautiful. More so than he had earlier with his arms folded over his chest and his eyes moving slowly from one face to the other. Masako looked almost like she was going to faint and there was a greenish tinge to her cheeks that would have had him guessing she was pregnant if he knew her better. Jun handed out the drinks and then sat next to Nino.

“What...When...Why?”

“You missed...Where” Jun chuckled softly before holding up his hands in submission and turning to look at the guilty looking pair. “How far along do you think you are?”

“I...Um...I don’t...I mean...It...We only did the test today...” Masako answered in a whisper looking at Sho who was clearly trying to remember when they had had sex.

“Almost two months...It was...Well you know...When we went to see...” Sho’s voice trailed off as Nino let out a low snort and Jun found it almost amusing how afraid the rather muscular man seemed to be of his small date.

“Ah...Okay, yeah...That would make sense”

“Right. Have you had any sickness or dizzy spells?” Jun asked slipping easily into professional mode. He loved this...He had always wanted this job and he was delighted to be able to offer help to somebody that clearly needed it. Of course more than anything Masako needed to get checked out by both a doctor and a midwife but at least he could offer some advice.

“Um...Yeah...I’ve been getting sick in the afternoon and I get dizzy...Is that okay? Is there something wrong?”

“Give me your wrist...” Jun said and the girl did as she was told more quickly than the women he saw in the hospital did and he gave a smile pressing his fingers against her pulse point and looking at his watch. He motioned for them all to be quiet for a moment and then counted the beats of her heart. It was elevated, more so than would be normal under stress and he gave a sigh. “Your heartrate is higher than it should be, its nothing to worry about...I think it’s mostly cause you’re under stress but you really need to go see a doctor, what about your dizziness? Is it really bad? Have you felt like you’re going to faint?”

“A little...I thought it was cause I was standing up too quickly...Am I okay?” Masako asked and Jun could tell that Nino was eagerly waiting the answer as well and Jun quickly gave a nod trying to be as reassuring as possible.

“I think you might be a little anaemic, the doctor will order some blood tests and you might need iron pills...It’s perfectly normal in pregnancy. Nino said that you had something wrong with your lungs?”

“I got an infection in my right lung and it caused some problems...” Masako shrugged making it sound as though she had fallen an scraped her knee. Nino let out a scoffing noise at his side and then said softly;

“You had to have surgery...It wasn’t just some problems. Her lung collapsed and they had to reflate it and take away some of her lung...But that was years ago...”

“It can still cause stress now. You really need to get an appointment straight away. Do you feel comfortable talking to your own doctor or would it be okay if I made you an appointment with one at the hospital where I work. They will be discreet...” Jun hummed and both Masako and Sho nodded numbly “The first thing they will do is confirm that is a pregnancy and they will do some exams on you...Just to make sure that everything is going okay”

“Will you...Be my midwife...”

“You can ask, but I’m only a trainee so you would have to ask for my team leader. They don’t normally allow friends to work on friends but if you would feel more comfortable with me doing the exam...”

“Yes...I would...Please...” Masako said quickly much to Jun’s surprise. They had played together every now and then but he wouldn’t go so far as to say they were friends and he would be quick to point that out, so he was surprised that she would feel comfortable with him doing the exam. Most expectant mothers are very reluctant about him doing it and his team leader often joked that he caused a lot of racing hearts. His mentor was a nice woman, already in her 60’s with more births under her belt than anyone else at the hospital but she had a wicked sense of humour and Jun was often reminded of his own grandmother. Not that he would ever say as much to his mentor who insisted that she was only in her 40s and wasn’t old enough for grandchildren yet.

“Then just tell them that at the hospital. I will arrange an appointment tomorrow and tell Nino the time...Um...You’re not 18 yet are you?”

“No...I’m the same age as Nino...”

“Then you will need your legal parent or guardian with you. It’s a stupid rule, and one that the hospital is hoping to change as they feel that it can make some patients more uncomfortable but...” Jun gave an apologetic smile. He didn’t hold with the rule at all, he had seen a lot of younger mothers run away in something akin to fear when they were told that they needed their parents with them and he was always worried about where they would go, more so the ones that he didn’t see again.

“I understand...I have to tell my parents...” Masako whispered her face going a few shades paler as she slumped forward in her chair resting her head on her arms.

“Masa, you shouldn’t worry too much...Aunty and Uncle won’t be angry with you, you know that...Worried, yes, shocked, yes, but not angry...” Nino told his friend reaching over the table and taking her hand in his own. Jun had always known how much Masako meant to Nino, when they had first started playing together Jun had been convinced that she was his girlfriend but Nino had been quick to tell him that she was his best friend and sister in all but blood. It was touching to see how much he cared for her. “They will be more upset that you’re upset and afraid to tell them...”

“You think?”

“I know...You have the best parents in the world...You know you do...Once you tell them...You will feel better...” Nino gave his friend a grin and then laughed with his eyes narrowed “I can’t believe it though...Urgh...I should have known...But you didn’t even tell me that you’d had sex...”

“You’ve never told me...”

“Because I’ve never...I mean...Urgh...Shut up...This isn’t about me!” Nino cried going scarlet as he looked at Jun and Jun just grinned happily sipping at his drink.
