“How many of the old gods are there?” Satoshi asked sitting on a log beside a fire with a blanket wrapped around his shoulders. A steaming mug of something sweet had been placed into his hands and although he was sure there was something alcoholic in it he couldn’t place what it was. Kazumi clicked her tongue against the inside of her cheeks before coming to join him by the fire. She poked it with a metal blade for a moment sending sparks shooting up over the cauldron sitting on the wrought iron holders. Satoshi was surprised at home much warmth the fire gave off without acidic smoke.

“There are seven gods, three former women and three former men, the most holy is the mother goddess, Via...” Kazumi answered softly before shoving her hand deep into the fire. Satoshi shouted loudly making a move to grab her arm but Kazumi shrugged him off bringing out her undamaged hand. “Pyria the goddess of the flame, she protects me and will one day protect you...Once you have gained her respect. You will only manage that when you learn to respect her...”

“Pyria, will you tell me the stories of the old gods? If I can get an understanding of them then I could...”

“In time you will be able to ask them for their tales yourself, but for tonight I will ask you what you know of Aquaria?” Kazumi asked and Satoshi drained the sweet drink from his glass and then told her the story that his mother had told him. Kazumi listened silently to the story and then stoked the fire again before humming as he came to an end.

“Your mother sounds as though she longs to follow the old ways, a sensible woman, unfortunately she was incorrect. Aquaria was born the daughter of a fisherman, her birth name was Rosa. She was a simple girl, not stupid but simple, her mother had died in childbirth and Rosa was raised only by her father. He had no knowledge of raising a girl and raised her as one might a son. She worked on the boat and on the dock and had no idea that she had developed into a beautiful woman. The son of the chieftain decided that he would like her for himself. Of course, he couldn’t marry her, she was only the daughter of a peasant after all...”

“He raped her?”

“He did...She became pregnant with his child...When the chieftain found out that the girl had borne him a grandson he determined to have her and the killed...” Kazumi stared into the fire some more and Satoshi swallowed deciding that this story was worse than the one his mother had told him. He felt sick and yet he wanted to hear more, to know how it ended.

“Why?”

“His son was due to marry the daughter of a rival clan. Their child, would join the two clans. The son would have been duty bound to marry the girl he had raped...So, when her father was at sea and she was alone and unprotected the chieftain and his men stole into their home. The killed the baby easily enough with a knife against his throat. Rosa though, the poor love she fought and screamed, kicked and punched, but to no avail” Kazumi’s voice quivered as she spoke her eyes glazing over with tears and Satoshi could feel some in his own eyes. In his mind he could see Rosa struggling with multiple men, terrified and heartbroken that her child had been so cruelly taken. “There was but one of her and several of them and although she did get away they soon caught her beside the ocean that she loved so much. Her face in the sand the man that had taken her innocence on her back. The ocean stole her life away. She did not go easily. Her spirit was strong and she had been pure of heart. She would have raised her baby with no intention of ever saying the name of its papa for all that she suffered. The mother Via took her into her bosom and gave her the power she needed to get her revenge and she did...The night of the wedding feast a storm unlike the world has seen again rose up and swept through the town killing all that had killed her...Gone was the child Rosa and in her place was Aquaria, goddess of the oceans...”

“The story my mother told was bad enough...Men are monsters...” Satoshi spat his mind filled with images of his own father and the girl in the tower. She was only ten, at the most, her face still had the flush and chubbiness of youth and yet his father was doing unspeakable things to her. He had often been told that he was like his father in many ways and the idea of that turned his stomach into tight knots.

“Not all men, only those that think they are better than most. Some women can be just as bad. It is much better to say that some humans are less human than others...” Kazumi shrugged touching his shoulder gently. “Your father will get what is owed, Satoshi, have no fear and you are nothing like him...Your father never had your kindness, those that think you are alike, have only seen him in passaging. Already you are a better man than he...You should sleep now though, you have done well for today little prince...”

“I barely did anything...” Satoshi mumbled but almost as soon as the words were out of Kazumi’s mouth he felt his eyes grow heavy and he wanted to sleep. Kazumi smiled like a caring mother and helped him up from his log before guiding him to the bed.

“And yet you have learned much. You have only just recovered and sleep will allow you to store what you have learned. Your dreams will aid you further...” The witch hummed in a way that made it sound as though she were singing. Satoshi hummed his head meeting the soft pillow gently and his eyes closing. A warm blanket was wrapped around him and her hand moved through his hair. A thumb met his forehead gently in a slow steady circle and Satoshi smiled sleep coming easily to him.

He woke to find himself standing on a beach looking out over an inky black ocean. A full moon was high in the sky but there were no stars. The rays of the moon played around on the waves. It was a beautiful sight. At first he thought that he was alone but then he saw the girl from the tower standing beside him. The strange dragon teddy wrapped around her shoulders her hair seemingly glowing a bright blue.

“Aquaria brings me here sometimes. I have never seen the real ocean...” The girl hummed crouching down and picking up a handful of sand letting it run through her fingers for a moment. Her head tilted to one side as though she was listening to a voice on she could hear. “I wonder if it’s really this beautiful...Get strong quickly, then you can take me to the real Ocean...”
